Do you think that they will go for him? He had 15.5 sacks last season and he is only 25. Any thoughts???
He would not be brought in as a 34 end. The question would be could he stand up and play OLB. He's about 270 but is explosive with a high motor.
It wouldn't be worth it to sign him and try him out at a position and scheme he is unfamiliar with, I don't see the chiefs letting him go anyway.
He's about 270 if I'm not mistaken.... That's about 15 lbs lighter than Ellis.... He seems like the kind of guy who could play both 3-4 DE and 3-4 OLB, assuming he learns the positions.... Allen is a high-motor guy though who excels at bull-rushing... I think he'd be a good fit... In fact, I started a thread saying we should pursue him last offseason, and I got bashed by a bunch of people who claimed that we shouldn't pursue him because he is not a 'Mangini guy'...
i thought we would agree, that our D-Line is a problem, cuz they?re undersized and now you would want to put a guy in that?s even lighter than our lightest D-Liner? a 34 DE has to rush different than a 43 DE, a 43 DE has all the space outside of the OT to work with. A 34 DE is not the last man on the line, that means has way less space to work with, wich makes speed less important than power. A 34 DE?s rush is much more simular to a 43 DT rush, than to a 43 DE rush. Watch Ty Warren Rush the passer, he?s a perfect example of how to do it. A 34 OLB?s rush is much more simular ot a 43 DE rush, cuz he?s the last man on the line and has all the space to use. and i don?t even want to talk about how difficult it is to play the run for a 270 lbs 34DE. But i think he would make a very good OLB, when it comes to stopping the run and Rushing the passer, the question is can he drop in coverage and run with TEs down the field? I highly doubt that, and our playcalling would always be limited by his lacking coverage skills. He would be a solid OLB in a 34, but he?ll always be more valueable as a DE in a 43, that?s why we would always overpay him by bidding against 43 Teams.
I agree with you there, and I think it'd be hard to convince him to sign on somewhere where he'd have to learn possibly 2 new positions.... That being said, with my post I was imagining him playing a role very similar to what Bowens did in spot duty, but as a full-time player... Bowens is 265, and listed as an OLB on our depth chart. That being said, he came in on a lot of obvious passing situations for Coleman, and played DE very effectively.... He also maintained a decent level of production as a LB. That's similar to what I believe Allen, as a better version of Bowens, would do in our D, but it would be an experiment, and may not end up paying off.... I don't know what kind of player Allen would be in coverage, which is why that hybrid role would seem like his only option. OLB on 1st and 2nd downs, and then moving up to DE in a lot of obvious passing situations. He is an excellent bull-rusher, and I don't think lining up inside would hurt his production much as a pass-rusher.... It'd be a gamble to bring him in, and I think it'd have to be complimented by us making a move to bring in a much bigger NT or DE on the other side, but, if it worked, it'd pay off big time
That is one of the best most accurate posts ive seen on this site. I will say it seems that he's gotten over his drinking and driving days but it would be a big risk not knowing how he could cover as an OLB in the 3-4. Bottome line is he plays hard and any defense should be able to utilize him...but it won't be us.
yeah, he?s a great Bullrusher, but from the End Spot in a 43, where the first contact is about 2-3 yards in the backfield, and you already have your T go backwards and he has to be prepared for many different moves from the DE. But when a T lines up against a 34 DE and plays 1-on-1 protection, he knows, that he hasn?t to protect the outside that much, cuz there?s a OLB lined up outside, that also has to be blocked, too. That allows him to make a much shorter step backwards, and he meets the DE maybe 1 yard or half a yard deep instead of 2-3 yards. And because the DE doesn?t have the space to speedrush him, he can play his protection much more agressive and step in the punch with more force, to stop the DE upfront. That?s why a 34 DE has to be simply bigger and more powerful to be able to bullrush the T in a 34, than in a 43. a 43 DE to have a good bullrush has mainly to hit the T hard when he?s a little off balance or not prepered, or a little out of position. a 34 DE has to overpower the T to have sucsess with a bullrush.
Sounds just like Chris long then. I see Allen as a hybrid tweener who could play either role. I think his technique is excellent , so the weight hes giving up is easily made up by his speed and technique. Good player.
