Yet he still had a very competitive team year in and year out (for the most part) with those bad QB's. The wins speak for themselves. I don't really want to argue about it because it's a completely hypothetical question that will probably never happen, but I don't get how people can shit on Cowher.
Let’s get real here. Coaches avoid the Jets like the plague. Think about our past 5 coaches.1. Kotex (This mans tenure aged me by 10 years in the span of two) 2. Bill Parcells (I knew he would improve the Jets right away; I also knew he would spend like a crazy person and bring in a lot of his former players-This is a recipe for short term success) 3. Al Groul (some will say he would have been a great coach for us but he bolted without a reservation in the world) 4. Herm Edwards (He was a great motivator But a terrible decision maker-Rookie Head coach)5.Eric Mangini (Was just as amazed as we were to win 10 games in 06-07 ; didn’t have a good off-season-Juries still out-rookie head coach) Last two coaches rookie head coaches ; guess the pickings are slim! Bill Cower would not even take the call much less interview for the Jets Head coaching Job. He's the kind of coach that stays for a while and that has not been the daily senario around here for years.
I'm not shitting on Cowher, nor am I denying he wins games. I'm just saying he did a terrible job of handling his QB position, and it likely cost him multiple suberbowl trophies. If Mangini gets the boot, it will likely be because he fails to solidify the QB situation. Enter Cowher, a top 10 defense, a solid running game, and 10 years of almost, watching horrible QB's.
Kordell Stewart opened the season as starter at QB for 5 years of a 6 season stretch, the one year he didn't start I think it was Kent freaking Graham who went out with an injury and Stewart got his job back. I credit Cowher for doing as well as he did with Kordell starting, but the decision was pretty confounding in itself. If he had gotten serious about the most important position on his team, he might have won 2-3 more rings.
I don't know, maybe Cowher is above average at recognizing how important defense and the lines are. He did a pretty good job building teams and thus left a team for rookie head coach Mike Tomlin to coach to 11-5. If it was Cowher in the Jags game, with his experience in big games, the Steelers would be in the divisional round. Mike Tomlin: DB coach for Bucs 01-05 D Coord for Vikes 06 HC Steelers 07 pretty familiar
Lets see what Mangini can do? It's not like I expect the playoffs next season. It would be nice, but not holding my breath! If he can get us to .500 next season then I believe he deserves more time.
