With the Jets being $27 million under the cap, perhaps it is time to open up the wallet and go after some difference-makers through free agency.

This would be my wish list:

    A. Infuse leadership and additional talent and experience into the Offensive Line and turn it into one of the league's best. Spend money at these positions where longevity is more statistically assured than most other positions in the game.

    1. Alan Faneca - time to add a solid veteran with All-Pro credentials into a young and developing O-line. Pencil him into LG position and watch the development of D'Brick shoot up. Bigger and better than P. Kendall, Faneca will solidify the left side of the line for at least another five years.

    2. Stacey Andrew/Max Starks - time to end the turnstile pass-protection and the weak run-blocking on the right side of the line by picking up one of these two top flight RT's. Both are still young, 26 y.o. and 25 y.o., respectively. Both are big, strong and more athletic.

    B. The Patriots' passing attack isn't going away anytime soon. Counter the move by strengthening the Secondary and applying more Front 7 pressure to put Brady on his back.

    3. Nnamdi Asomugha - Asante Samuels may sound like the right piece but Asomugha is a stronger cover corner who doesn't overly gamble. He should have been a Pro-Bowler. Put him opposite Revis and the Jets have the makings of one of the best CB tandems in the league.

    4. Terrell Suggs - he has been a defenisve disruptor of the highest order and there's no denying his sack totals through the course of the last five years. His versitility would give the team more flexibility in the type of fronts that they show.

Picking these players from Free Agency early would give the Jets more flexibility come the 2008 Draft to manuver and pick-up the necessary infusion of young talent without feeling the need to reach for a 'need' player.

    What do you think?

I agree totally, but what's the likelihood we can get all or ANY of these players to come to the JETS, we have the cap space, NOW we must do something with it.

    No way Asomugha leaves Oakland.

He'll be franchised if they don't work out a deal with him.

I think Faneca needs to be priority number 1.

With the long hair, he even looks like Mangold's older brother. Two white boys with wild hair, I love it.

OUCHHHH! Personally, I think that the FO should receive a bye for last year's FA season. Not as many top flight talent were available last year compare to this year's crop. Perhaps saving cap space last year was the more prudent move....but $1 million of Kendall was a dumb penny-wise move if you ask me.

I've been sliding back and forth on Faneca and I think I'm finally going to slide to the YES side. My brother-in-law says he's a fine offensive lineman and that he's probably got 3 years left at that level. Right now the Jets desperately need some stability next to D'Brick to help him stay out of the bust column.

For o-line I'd rather go after Jordan Gross (Panthers) for RT and Jake Scott (Colts) for Guard, but a previous poster is right that we have to wait and see who's actually available.

These players would allow maximum versatility in the draft. We could draft anyone. And then anyone we drafted, we could not sign.

Faneca is going to want tons of money and he's only going to play for a few more years.

Bye the time this team is back into contention Faneca will retire, waste of money on a guy who isn't that good anymore

Propably tagged otherwise go get em

Karlos Dansby - Top priority if available
Dallas Clark - Indy would be foolish not to tag him
Nnamdi Asomugha - Probably tagged by Oakland

The guys we really have a shot at

Jacob Bell - Young stud guard just coming into his own
Gibril Wilson - Under the radar but did a very good job at safety for the Giants
Montrae Holland - Started at both guard positions in New Orleans, should come cheap
Jason Fergeson - Geting older but should help our depth at DT
Calvin Pace - not as good as Dansby but the Cardinals can't franchise two players
Jordan Gross - Won't come cheap but would be an upgrade

Ryan Lilja from the Colts is going to be a FA isn't he? That would be a nice pickup.

bell for LG, Stacy Andrews or Max Starks for RT, and Dansby for OLB.

Then we draft Gholston/Long/Dorsey, whoever's available.

these moves upgrade our line and our front 7. If we have the availabe resources and if he isn't tagged, i'd go after nnamdi as well. with our improved front 7 and secondary consisting of nnamdi, revis, and rhodes, brady won't have it as easy against us.

Faneca should be priority number one, primarily because hes the only one whos a sure shot to hit the market. Suggs would be great, but I'd expect him to get franchised; obviously it will depend on who they bring in to replace Billick, but odds are they won't let him go. Starks is a possibility, and if hes available hed be a nice addition. Asomugha is unlikely to get cut loose, and even if he is, hell want to be paid like hes one of the best corners in the league; since weve already got one of the best corners in the league in Revis, Im not convinced itd be a good idea to give the big bucks to somebody else.

Good point. The new guy is going to want to phase out the Ray Lewis era pretty quickly and keeping Suggs is a big part of that. It would take the Ravens several seasons to recover from losing both Lewis and Suggs in succession so my guess is they lock up Suggs and let Ray Lewis leave naturally when his contract is up.

This Jet ownership has no history of being willing to spend the money for good free agents. What makes you think that has changed? Look for more signings of car salesmen that have been out of the game for 6 years..but they WILL have character.

I expect free agency this year to go much like it has since Woody’s been here. We’ll sit around at the start watching all of our key opponents sign big name players while we sit back “being responsible” until a player emerges with demands as such that no one else signs him.

As free agency draws to a close and that player becomes increasingly desperate; I fully expect to sign him. To complement the one big name signing, we’ll bring in 26 retread rejects that didn’t work anywhere else and let them complete for starting positions.

    Sorry guys…just a prediction, I hope I’m wrong.
