The following list includes all NFL (or AFL) head coaches who led their teams to sub-.200 winning percentages as returning head coaches. These are all coaches who were in at least their 2nd season with a team.

John McKay is the only returning head coach to suffer through a sub-.200 season and go on to eventually lead the same franchise to a playoff win.

    One coach.

    One coach out of 89.

I was unable to use code to present this list in table form here. This was the best I could do. If interested, I can e-mail you a version which would be more pleasing to the eye.

    How to read this stuff:
1st line- Coach, year/team, the year of the coach's tenure in which he coached the team to a sub-.200 record
2nd line- W-L-T record, winning percentage during the season in question
    3rd line- *future performance
NCA= Never Coached Again as a head coach in the NFL (or AFL)

*Examples- Pop Ivy coached the Cardinals again in 1960 and 1961. Then he went on to coach the Oilers. Allie Sherman coached the Giants to two 7-7 marks after his .107 season.

Presidential Candidate John McKay was also a good football coach? Mind boggling!

I think Linehan will get another year. Bulger and Jackson were both hurt for chanks of the season. The offensive line was also descimated by injury.

Yeah, he will probably get another year. History would indicate, though, that he is probably an awful NFL head coach. It would also tell you to bet heavily against the Rams ever winning a playoff game with Scott Linehan as their head coach.

Any time you have top start Gus Frerotte and a white running back you know its not the coaches fault.

That's right. Mangini avoided joining the list after the Jets beat the Chiefs.

Of course, Cam Cameron did not make the list because he was not a returning coach. Obviously, he was in his first year.

I sent this list in its original nice-looking format to a Rams fan prior to Week 17. I noted that his team's coach and my team's coach were in danger of going on the list.
I'll post his comments on Linehan later tonight. Suffice it to say, he is not particularly pleased with Linehan.

We may have beat the Chiefs, but I think it will still be an uphill climb for him. I'm pulling for him though. I do like how he has approached training and preparing the team. I also like their philosophy on finding guys to be a part of the program. Hopefully the organization can get a foot hold and push themselves up out of the hole.

What is the history for coaches who go .250 in their second season going on to succeed?

Very nice job on the research. I'm thinking you hit the nail on the head: Linehan may not be gone but he's done.

I'm not really sold on Linehan, but aside from the old stand bys, who have turned into only slightly above average NFL players, they have one of the least talented rosters in the league. Part of that is talent development, and it's the coaches fault, but it's mostly the front office. This is a terrible group of guys.

Yep, this guy's not good. I understand the Rams played the Eagles and the Giants. One is my NFC Super Bowl preseason pick and the other one is the defending Super Bowl champions. But, 38-3 and 41-13?
    C'mon! Linehan sucks.

Did you see the clip of him answering press conference questions today. He clearly doesn't have a clue.

He's gone in 3 weeks if the current trends hold up

this is another good example of a coach being more effective as a coordinator and not a head coach.

I would take Linehan in microsecond as our offensive coordinator...if it meant we fired Schotty

Maybe more teams need to look at guys that aren't coordinators, but maybe more focused on the fundamentals like o-line or d-line.

Their egos get in the way of the job their coordinators are trying to do and messes up team chemistry.
