Think this might be a nice pickup.......

06:10PM - Jets Eye Canadian Football Runningback
Saturday, January 5th, 2008 by Gary Grund

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Jets have reportedly offered a contract to CFL star runningback Joe Smith of the British Columbia Lions.

Smith, 28, set a Lions? franchise record with 1,510 yards this past season, scoring 18 touchdowns. In two seasons with BC, he?s totaled 2,397 yards with 27 TD?s and a 5.4-yard per carry average. He went undrafted in the NFL Draft in 2003 draft and signed on with the Jaguars but was released after spending 15 weeks with the team. During the 2005 season, he signed with the Titans and was allocated to NFL Europa. He led the Rhein Fire with 1,026 rushing yards on 223 carries and add five touchdowns. He also set a league record with six consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

The Bears have also offered a contract to Smith.

?It?s likely that he will compete with a couple of other guys as the third-string RB if he decides to sign with the Jets?

He is an explosive player, Ricky Williams didn't do so hot up here so realistically anything can happen. I am still pissed that Herm did not give Kenton Keith a chance when he was here with the Jets, now he is a solid backup with Indy

I like this move if it happens. Nobody knows about him but, I like the fact they are looking all over for talent to improve this team.

I watched Ricky play a couple of times and he was even below average in the CFL. Why Parcells has just resigned him is beyond me , is Bill still on Woodies payroll?

Parcells believes in two things really strongly: prior performance and contract years. I'm pretty sure he figures that if Ricky Williams has just one shot left in him there's a chance it's a good one. I wouldn't be surprised to see Parcells restructure his contract after next season, assuming it's a good to great one, and allow him to earn back most of the forfeited pro-rated bonus money with another great season in 2009. Parcells understands incentives and their effect on human nature.

Is he ever going to be back in football shape?

He's quit on the team twice already, is not that good anymore, and is a distraction. Why anyone would want him is beyond me.

USED to be. Not a chance now. I fancy Kevan Barlow to get to 500 yards rushing before he ever does.
