I feel excited again to be a Jets fan for some reason. The horrible 4-12 season is over and now we can look to the future.

Odds are the Jets will be a better team in 2008 and that is also exciting for me.

I keep thinking about possible additions to the team to help them improve, etc.

The team was 10-6 last year, with a solid draft and free agency there is no reason to think that cannot be repeated in 2008.

The depression I felt during the season is gone too. It is the past, time to move on to Free Agency and the draft. Possibly upgrading the coaching staff before that. Dropping dead weight like McCareins. Year three the team will be even more of a Mangini team and I am excited for that.

Anyone else feeling how I am feeling? :)

I'm relieved I don't have to watch the 2007 Jets every Sunday. Other than that I'll wait and see what happens before I start guessing what's going to happen in 2008. Tannenbaum and Mangini are in "Prove It" mode right now and we'll see if they can or can't. This is the last offseason they'll get if they fail.

What record in 2008 would allow Mangini to keep his job for 2009? 8-8?

I never feel relief until the Pats are out of the playoff race.

And, when they win the Superbowl, I don't feel relief until they are out of the next year's playoff race.

In sum, I don't feel much relief.

Anything above 5 wins is my guess. That tells you where this season set the bar. He can get to 7-9 or 8-8 and do that for 3 more years is my guess.

Relieved in a sense, yes. Of course this means we just get to wind up for the 20 thousand McFadden threads now. Whole new stress to deal with until the draft. I am probably more anxious now though to see what changes will happen. Nothing much is likely to happen soon so we will get to sit and wait it out for a few months.

I'd say any marked improvement over this season. Another slow start, and post-Bye week turnaround for the D should not be tolerated. Nor should losing the majority of our games that are close late. Those are both marks of poor coaching.

The way I see it, the team had better be a whole new animal next season for Mangini to feel like his job is safe after the season.

6-10 would technically be an improvement, but that would just be winning a couple of the close games they lost in 2007. I don't think that would be enough to me. I would say 8-8 minimum. But we are just talking about him keeping his job and I guess 6-10 could do it, but it would suck for us fans. Haha.

He can go 6-10 next year and anything better than that the year after and he'll keep his job. 5-11 and he probably goes away, 4-12 and he certainly does.

Depends on the 6-10 team if we are like this year, just winning a few more close games, then it should be interesting whether he keeps his job. But if we get destroyed by 15+ in 5 or so losses he should be fired. As a twist what if the 6 wins are all by 10+ points, and the team loses 6 or more games by 1 score or less? what do we do then?

That would be a very odd team who is inconsistant. That is also not Jets football.

I'm pretty optimistic myself, but how are the odds in favor of the Jets to be a better team in 2008? We haven't done any off-season moves yet.

I'm sure Tangini won't be quite though when it comes to the Free Agent market, and they will release useless players (like J-Mac).

We should be in for a good season in 08'-09', if the Front Office gets it done in the off-season.

Well that's kind of what I'm saying. There ABSOLUTELY needs to be some sort of improvement in the W column, but a small improvement there, complimented by a clear improvement in the on-the-field product and some bad luck, and he should be fine...

The season was pretty awful, it was over so fast. by week 6 we were talking draft.

Truthfully, I am usually very excited for the next year but I am tempering my excitement. We have such a dearth of talent on both sides I wouldnt be surprised with an 8-8 next season.

The reason I say this is we need 2 or 3 new guys on the O-line, and even if we could get them they will take at least a year to gel together. All O-lines need experience playing together before they play well.

Obviously we need a Nose Tackle, where are we really getting one? Can Pouha play? who knows.

I am relieved that the beatings have stopped.

    A 4-12 season= a lot of agita.

All of us who follow them closely know exactly what positions need to be upgraded through Free Agency and the draft, and what issues there are with certain players (eg., Vilma, Pennington, and Coles).

It will be very interesting to see what moves are made, what players are obtained and retained, and who goes.

I was extremely disappointed with the coaching all season long, and as far back as week three or so I started that thread calling Sutton out. I was outright fuming at many of the personnel moves EM made along the way, and freely posted them here. The FO botched things up last summer, too.

But now, it is about what they do for next season. So, i am cautiously optimistic that this year they will push the right buttons, get some good players in the draft again, and reverse their bad FA batting average by bringing in some very good FA talent, even if Woody has to pay more than he likes for it.

If they are as active in the off-season as many of us know they need to be, we actually might have a lot to talk about over the next few months.

No. I'm normally an extremely upbeat person, but the way the season ended with the question mark on the QB position has me very bummed.

I was at the game Sunday in which Clemens put on one of the most dismal displays I've ever seen at QB. So forgive me for saying this, but our season next year is in jeopardy because of this. It totally screwed up our chances of finally dumping Pennington and ridding ourselves of the dink and dunk and the expense of a QB who, quite frankly, isn't worth backup money.

The situation also forces us to go out and look for another QB in the draft, something we shouldn't have to waste valuable picks or salary on. I consider this a setback in our development and something which could potentially add yet another year or two of "rebuilding."

Last year we talked of being ready in '07. "Well," some speculated, "we'll need to rebuild until '08, considering Clemens will take time." Now '08 is appraoching and we still don't have the franchise QB in hand. Not only that, but we're now forced to keep a very expensive (expensive and overpaid from the start) "backup" QB who will carry a clipboard most of the year and hopefully prevent us from another 4-12 season. All of the above not withstanding, we STILL have no clear-cut answers for '09 and even into the '10 season.

So no, I'm sorry, but I don't share your optimism. I truly hope this team turns it around with an effective O-line and by addressing some of the other problems, but we're still 3 years awy from having the "franchise QB" we need to make it to the Big One.

I wear a Jets T-shirt or hat around wherever I go nowadays, just because.

We had an old expression in Vietnam... "F@ck 'em if they can't take a joke."

We'll come back at some point....

I was optimistic going into 2006 and until the draft in 2007. They're going to have to earn an optimistic outlook from me moving forward. It's too easy for things to sink from where we are and it's going to take some swimming against the current to turn things around.
