I agree, but my claim was that it might be a bit much salary-cap-wise to have Robertson, Ellis, Coleman, Mosely and Moore at DE considering the amount of cap space the first 3 eat up
I know that Moore got an extension, but wasn't it just a minor one (thought it was one extra year and raise)? I'll see if I can dig up the information. In all seriousness in regards to the defensive line, Shaun Ellis is out of place here. Yes, we drafted him to play 3-4 end, but times have changed and the players have gotten bigger. He's getting paid too much to do too little. His contract runs up in 2010, but we will have moved on by 2008. We will most likely have to eat his contract next year because I don't see Shaun Ellis taking as big of a pay cut as we need him to. Yeah, Chatham isn't good. But who would we keep instead? Jason Trusnik? Marques Murrell? Also, does anyone know how much the salary cap will be next season? They keep raising it, it is getting ridiculous.
True...but none of those guys is a potential starter in the future. DRob isn't exactly ideal height for the position, and he'll probably play more NT. Ellis is gonna be 31. Coleman is decent at beast. Moseley isn't a starter. Moore is young, big, has starting potential, and is a better two gap player than anyone on our roster right now. Definitely a good move. In fact, any young DE/DT during this offseason would be nice.
Nice detail, Quack. I love Dre Moore too, but I think there is no way he falls out of the 2nd round. There are some who say he is going in the 1st round -- 6'4" 298lbs, runs a 4.82 40. I have been one who feels that Eric Barton was fine at ILB next to D. Harris. But the more I think about it, the more I just cant get around his $3.2 million salary for 2008 season. Way too much. Putting Hobson on the inside depends entirely on how much we can sign up him for before the draft (hopefully) since he is a free agent 2008. If it gets anything near the Barton salary, I say we look to the draft in the 4th round for an ILB, hopefully there will be somebody there - like J. Lehman or Jasper Brinkley......not sure about Ben Moffitt because I am scared of LBs under 240lbs in the 3-4 D (see J. Vilma #51).
Well, I enjoyed your mock off season. Gholston and Sweed would be two nice pickups. I have to say the only one problem I see is Schmitt. Profootballtalk.com has him rated as a first round selection and expects him to slide to the early second round because he's just that good. He definately won't be there in the fourth. Otherwise looks good.
Who is picking a FB Schmitt may have that type of talent, but he still wouldnt be taken before the 3-4 round.
One of either Hillis or Schmitt may be picked in the second round. The other will probably drop down. Both of them are just as good in my eyes, but I really couldn't ever see a FB going in the first round. Has there ever been one? NFLDraftscout.com has Schmitt going in the 4th and Hillis going 5-6 (I'd say they're more neck-n-neck than that, but hey that's just me). True, he isn't exactly the ideal height. He has been damn effective when lining up there, though. And I mean DAMN effective. Like going beyond damn to DAYUM!
I can't speak for the history of the draft with regards to a FB going in the 1st round but profootballtalk.com has him highly rated in the first and finding a perennial pro bowl fb isn't exactly an easy thing to do. They just don't come around that often. Look for a team in the end of the first round to go after him. I just see Schmitt going really early.
