I agree. This will be the third offseason for this group to bring in their own players, let's see what happens.
If there's one silver lining to this season it's the wake up call to the Jets FO that they are not even close to being an elite team with the talent on the current roster. There will be no "minor tweaking" this offseason, there will be major changes. Underachievers like Justin McCariens will be outta here. If we do not make MAJOR improvements to the O-Line I will be utterly shocked. If the Jets are truly aggressive in Free Agency this year, we could be at least a 10 win team next year. The only problem that does not look fixable (at least not this year) is the QB quandry. We've just got to pray that Clemens is much better than what he showed this season.
That's why you bring in a day 2 rookie and swap out Tui for maybe Grossman. Grossman has never been any worse than what we've seen out of Kellen so far, and probably has as good a chance to win a game as Chad. He'd be solid depth if nothing else.
You're right in mentioning Mangini, because you know he's going to be the big time recipient of whatever are the results of this QB dilemma. He's on a tightrope now with no safety net. You trade Chad and Clemens stinks up the field or goes down and you're looking at another 4-12 season because you have no decent backup. So you keep Chad as the backup and swallow the exhorbitant salary while giving Clemens until Week 8, at which time, if he doesn't work out, you're on your way to another 4-12. Or you try to avoid those scenarios and you play Chad as your starter from Week One, returning once again to the land of dinks and dunks, the lack of the deep pass and the crowded box, all while telling the media that you were wrong in benching Chad last year. The only winning scenario for Mangini is that he starts Clemens and he now flourishes behind our terrific, revamped O-line, progressing far beyond what our current imaginations predict, and we somehow get deep into the playoffs with the now-thriving Clemens who manages to shake off all previous season impersonations of a being a nervous, disorganized, scared shitless rookie. Mangini's between a rock and a hard place....
I'll guarantee you that if they do bring in an Andre Wadsworth this offseason it will not be with any fanfare or publicity. The Jets basically drafted two good players and sat on their hands after that last offseason and we were miserable. This year they'll either step up and bring in some real players or they'll be writing resumes about halfway through next season.
Agree with many other posters. We've got to give KC a full offseason and a chance in '08 before we abandon ship. While his play has not been something to write home about, many QBs who are successful today had a rough start... just looking at playoff teams this year, look at some of their current QB's ratings their first year of significant action: Peyton Manning: 71.2 Hasselbeck: 70.9 E. Manning: 55.5 V. Young: 66.7 Garrard: 53.8 It is very hard to step into the NFL and light it up the first season you start. I'm not giving up on KC yet. Let's see what he's got next year, then we should decide. It is WAY too early to abandon ship right now. If teams quit on QBs after a rough first partial season, there would be very few QBs to actually make it. I won't re-hash the plethora of other problems on offense that affected KC, but that needs to be part of the conversation, as well.
The only safe thing for Mangini to do now is to trade Chad as quickly as he can, start fresh and pray it all works out. Chad won't win more than 4 or 5 games as starter with the team constituted as it is. He probably can't win 4 games. So he's a dead end until everything else is fixed.
If we drafted Gholston with our 1st round pick and took Ainge with a 4th round pick I most certainly would not complain. And actually might prefer that course instead.
Well opining on what to do about the QB situation is a rather difficult task. Unfortunately the blunders of the FO/CS have stalled the rebuilding process with respect to the Offense. To accurately gauge what the Jets can expect from either Chad or KC or someone else the O-Line needs to be fixed. QB's running for their lives and having young QB's shellshocked is not going to put them on the fast track for success. Really weird saying this but if the staff shores up the line and gets another playmaker in here the QB situation will not be as bad as people think. Also two things I really think that will help the QB but are over looked are getting a quality QB coach into the fold and firing Tony Wise and get a good O-line coach in here. To summarrize: 1.) Shore up the line 2.) Get another playmaker preferrably a big WR 3.) Get a decent QB coach 4.) Get a decent O-line coach. If those things are accomplished I think we will be able to say the QB situation is not as bad as we think. I really think not addressing the O-line properly and needing this complete disaster of a year has hampered the development of both KC and Chad into BS/Mangini's system. By needing this year, I think Mangini is going to learn and never let this bullcrap happen again. If I am wrong and he does not learn from this atrocious error, well then he has no business being an NFL coach in the first place.
As KC goes, so will the NYJ and Mangini's job. With a weak schedule and year 3 of the program, it's playoffs or bust. Sucks to put that kind of pressure on Clemen's back but Mangini put him and the organization in that position when they chose to end the CP era by benching him. As boring as CP was to watch, he was a proven winner, something the Jets have not had much of. Making him the fall guy for a terrible Jets team was not one of Mangini's better moves. If KC does not turn out to be a capable QB, say hello to the 4-12 years again :sad:
I would love this scenario but I don't think Ainge makes it to the 4th round. Sign Jordan Gross (RT) and Jake Scott (LG) or Stacy Andrews (RT or LG) in FA, draft Gholston in rd 1, Limas Sweed in rd 2, and Ainge in rd 3.
That's why you keep Chad here. Like your Kenny O'Brien avatar there, we kept Pat Ryan around for a long time even after O'Brien was the man and we needed him at times. Maybe next year if Clemens cements the job you look to move Chad, but not now. It's too uncertain.

I also agree that this year's disaster falls squarely on Mangini and Tannenbaum because I think they seriously thought all was well when they drafted Ferguson and Mangold. Major miscalcualtion and something they need to learn from (and did) the hard way. They also greatly compounded that mistake by playing coy with Pete Kendall and we all know the results of that amateurish standoff. Their mistake wasn't ignoring the O-line, because they did draft Brick and Mangold, but the mistake was thinking they were done, so done they didn't need Kendall for the lousy pocket change he was begging for. Yeah, I know...you have to stand on principle. But I still include in the job description of a good GM that he be able to work out issues like that without appearing stubborn and without compromising major policy. Something should have been worked out behind the scenes. And whether or not it was their intentional decision to put the guy in the rookie dorm the first day of TC, the whole thing smacked of amateur Pop Warner. So yeah, these are the major mistakes IMO... the worst of '07. That and sitting smuggly on their hands afterwards and assuming no other attention need be given the O-line. Now we need to see if they learned from this and come out in free agency like the raped apes we expect them to be this offseason.
i would lose my poise and all my senses as a quarterback to if i got saced every play that i passed on...come on guys, if we revamped the oline and he sucks, everyone can laugh at me but if he does do good and we have a better oline...hey i was right cool...and when or if he does good, everyone will forget that season and jump on his bandwagon...i say give him time, maybe a oline...and he will actually get to flourish....if people think brian brohm is gonna be good...why not give this kid a shot when he has talent around him...hell, ye he sucked this season but look betwen the lines and you will see it was pretty much one vs. eleven...idk, everyone has their own opinion...i think he will be fine but i understand why you guys think he will suck.
What games were you watching? You either had extremely rose colored glasses on, or you made alot of trips to the fridge, because even when given time, he was AWFUL.
