POSTED 9:09 a.m. EST, January 2, 2008 "JETS TAMPERED WITH RYAN? I didn't notice this specific angle when I was pounding out the item about Lane and Monte Kiffin, primarily because I was more concerned about finding a good Sanford and Son clip on YouTube. (I couldn't.) But then the light bulb flickered. The item from InsideBayArea.com to which the "Kiffin and Son" item links indicates that Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was informed prior to the team's regular-season finale that he won't be retained -- and that he "had already secured his next place of employment." If that's accurate, it would mean that the Jets talked with Ryan about employment while Ryan was still the property of the Raiders. And that would be tampering. (Hey, I thought only the Patriots violated the rules.) Regardless, it appears that Jets defensive coordinator Bob Sutton is out, and that Ryan will be reunited with head coach Eric Mangini. Ryan was the linebackers coach in New England while Mangini worked there as defensive backs coach." I think the "tampering" thing is overblown - especially if Ryan was going to be fired. Doubt the Raiders care - and the good news is we will have a top DC moving forward!
....and there was no tampering between the Raiders and Monte Kiffin for their defensive coordinator positon? Right......
He was freaking fired. Where the hell is the tampering? Did Mangini have pictures of Al Davis taking his adult diapers off and use them to blackmail the Raiders into firing Ryan?
I believe Mangini knows the rules regarding tampering. Ryan knows if he got fired, he would have a job in no time, as he said to the press he would have a job " in a couple of Minutes" and never mentioned the Jets. The speculation has come from the media and the relationship between Mangini and Ryan. I really like Ryan, his players loved to play for him, he's a players coach with a firey attitude. The Raider players wanted Ryan as head coach, instead Davis hired Kiffin.
The original source ALAMEDA ? Lane Kiffin admitted Monday that he miscalculated the strength of the Oakland Raiders defense, which is one reason why Rob Ryan will be officially out as defensive coordinator sometime this week, free to accept the same position with the New York Jets. Sources indicate Ryan was told before the Raiders' final game, against San Diego on Sunday, that he would not be returning in 2008 and had already secured his next place of employment, hardly a surprise but still somewhat remarkable in that just 12 months ago, Ryan received more than just cursory consideration for the head job Kiffin got. http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_7856024?source=most_viewed It's not a secret Mangini wanted Ryan to be his DC two years ago but Al Davis wouldn't allow Rob Ryan to leave the Raiders
Sounds like the kinda guy we need kickin ass out on the field...I'm sick of Mangini having to step in and fix this team's defense for the past two years in the bye week. Since he likes this guy, hopefully they can work together and create a good scheme. We've got talent on the defense in Rhodes, Revis, and Harris to work around and no real holes anywhere, except maybe on the line. If this guy is what we're cracking him up to be I expect a much improved defense from the get-go next year.
They need to draft the BPA that fits our system at 6. That will probably be Gholston. Drafting a LG or a RT at 6 would be silly. We could use a deep threat WR but Desean Jackson isn't worth a number 6 pick.
I'm not sure how much I agree with that assessment. You're playing in a division with the Patriots. Even another cornerback or a safety might be more reasonable than an offensive player. You can't run a scheme that relies on play making linebackers and dominance at the point of attack and disregard the defense. You're certainly not going to draft a guard at 6 and it's more than likely they're going to try and acquire a young tackle via free agency after getting a long, depressing look at the high pick they wasted on Ferguson these last two weeks. It's unfortunate, but they can't really trade out, and because of Vilma's injury, I doubt you're going to get appropriate value for him. If you're at six and the workouts match up, Gholston has to be the guy. A 4 win team doesn't have the luxury of disregarding their 29 sacks as a team. -X-
We need to address the Oline in Free Agency and it's deep this offseason. There are plenty of pass rushing DE's in the draft - and I'd agree - Gholston is a guy I'd target. There are no quality NT's in the draft - and no legitimate #1 WR's...so Pass Rush is the way to go IMO...if not LB...
because the OL was so bad, we don't really know how deficient the Offense is. at RB, Jones and Washington should be a good enough combination to succeed WITH a good OL; especially with Washington really starting to emerge. at WR, we could definitely use some help here -- no need to get into it as we all know the deal with Coles. we know Cotchery is very good, we don't know what Brad Smith can become, and we don't know what Chansi Stuckey can become if he stays healthy. at TE, Baker is a nice pass catching TE. at QB, Clemens looks shaky at times way too inaccurate. but it seems all of the Offensive woes stem from a terrible OL, which makes it hard to assess the Offensive skill positions. like some others have said, #6 is too early to draft a G or RT, and i'm not sure what WR's really warrant that early of a pick, especially since they usually take longer to adjust to the NFL. so, picking Gholston really does make sense, especially if Ryan comes here and thinks that Gholston can make an impact on his D.
The offensive line is the biggest problem on the Jets period. This season showed how much Ferguson and Mangold relied on Kendall to plug that hole at LG. With that being said, it would be ludicrous to throw another young guy in there... the LG position needs a veteran, which is why I think Faneca is the man for that spot. RT is also a huge need but we don't need to go 6th overall to get a quality RT, that can be found in FA, or after the 2nd round. The Jets desperately need a pass rush and penetration, and Gholston is the most viable candidate to actually provide that. He has the right size, speed, and skill base for our defense, and should be there at 6.
The Oakland Tribune reports that Rob Ryan, Oakland's former defensive coordinator, had already agreed to the same job with the Jets before Sunday's game. Oakland's firing didn't make sense. They have a defense built around Ryan's system and he didn't forget how to coach with one bad season. Eric Mangini has yet to fire defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, but it will probably happen Wednesday
The jets could have the steel curtain D and still be a 7-9 team with this pathetic joke for an offense.
I rather draft a defensive player, make our defense tops in the league, and go with guards and a tackle in the later drafts. You don't need to draft a tackle with the 6th pick.
Would it be considered tampering if Ryan called Mangini after he was informed that he was getting axed? If that's how it worked, common sense says that he should be allowed to shop for a job if he knows he will be unemployed shortly.
No, it wouldn't be tampering if he was fired...it would be tampering if something like the Herm situation happened, you know, coach or coordinator leaves WITHOUT being canned to a different team and they were contacted about it or had conversations before that coach's job was done (e.g. regular season over, lost a playoff game)
