336....that means it was defered (bonus), the cost was 7.8. Even 4,8 is crazy for a back-up. We can agree to disagree. You really want to invest that much Money into a Backup???? Don't get me wrong, I really like Penny and have always supported him. From a GM's perspective you don't spend HUGE starter money on a back-up.
We're really walking a tight-rope here. If we make improvements to the team around Kellen, and he doesn't show much improvement, it starts a huge landslide of epic proportions for the team. By the time we get a capable replacement, our older, still productive guys will be out of the league or else in their twilight. Our young guys that we've been drafting will want the hell out of here. We will be floundering around the league with no quarterback. That's why, if we can't do any better, we better keep at least one trick in our bag, and add a little insurance by keeping Chad here. Hopefully he's willing to take a paycut.
That's a good analysis. People are saying that Pennington should be kept as a backup, because he's fairly good, and he's a proven starter. That's just not good management though. What's the point of having two good quarterbacks on one team, when the backup is getting paid more than the starter. He's gotta be traded to be fair to him.
Our older still productive players (basically Coles, Ellis and maybe Barton at this point) are going to be no good to the next Jets playoff run unless it's next season. There's a ton of chaff that needs to get sifted through at this point aside from those guys and playing a potential QB of the future while we do it is very important. One thing to remember about this last season is that the level of collapse was completely unwarranted given the potential talent on the roster. The Jets basically let three positions (NT, LG and RT) cripple their season and turn 7-9 into 4-12. With even a modest effort at actually finding talent next off season the Jets should be able to bounce back to 6 to 8 wins fairly easily. If we still have holes on the offensive line and D-Rob playing NT then we'll just suck again.
Pennington will be a Falcon next year. Clemens has shown himself to be no worse than potentially average. If this is truly a 'rebuilding' team, then that is acceptable. Fortify the O line, build on the running and short passing game, and bring in a better QB coach.
Someone please explain to me how if we are rebuilding that if we keep Chad under center for another year it is going to ruin the team? I'm sorry, but that just sounds absurd to me. If he comes back next year, renegotiates his contract and beats out Clemens I say start the guy that plays the best. So we are rebuilding. If Clemens can't show anything to beat out a guy whom you all thinks sucks eggs then what the hell, seriously? We will end up having to draft someone and they will come in and hopefully benefit from having Chad show them the ropes. Hardly the end of the world. What seems to be important is restructuring his contract.
Just got three calls regarding this mess and my Cowboy, Patriot and Steeler fan friends are laughing at the Jets for keeping this bum. This is a disgrace!
That must mean you're fully assured that Clemens is going to be good with some of those O-Line holes plugged up?
The only thing that is assured is Chad will be bad no matter who we put on the field. If we are rebuilding it is time to sever the ties.
My reason for starting Clemens when we did was to see what he had so I could judge weather we had to pick up a QB in the off season. While he did show flashes, overall, I was very disappointed in his performance. That being said, to just hand to keys of the offense over to him at this point would be insane. Until we find somebody better than Chad to challenge him during training camp, it would be totally irresponsible to release or trade Chad at this point in time. I refuse to go through another Kendell type situation at QB. While Chad does have his problems, he is serviceable and knows the offense. Until Kellen shows me a bit more consistency, to just let him go when we obviously need him would be the height of irresponsibility. Lets see how the off season develops. Perhaps the situation might change to our advantage. Training camp (and the Draft) are a ways off right now. Anything could happen.
The only way his cap number matters is if it prevents us from making moves. And with all the cap room we have that doesn't seem likely. It might not make Woody Johnson unhappy to pay $4.5 million to a backup, but I don't know why that upsets people here.
Agreed. We need someone better than Chad or keep him with a restructed contract. $4.8 or $7.8 whatever is still far too much. Yes, Chad sucks. Kellen is young and inexperienced, and I can't be sure about him yet. But at least if we keep Chad we won't have: Kellen, Tuireallysuckso, and some rookie and or some guy equal to Tui.
We went 3-5 with Clemens behind a terrible offensive line and a shaky defense. I think it's fair to expect us to win 6 to 8 games next year with him behind center if some of the holes are fixed.
The thing is that 2 of the 3 wins had absolutely nothing to do with the QB play and everything to do with the Defense showing up and having a running game. In fact we won the KC and Pitt game in spite of Clemens play. I wouldn't expect to come in anywhere near 8 wins with Clemens next year. (or Chad).
Isn't Chad's cap number high? WHO CARES. Johnson is a cheapskate, they don't approach the cap number anyway.
