I think what you're missing here is that Campbell is, right now, a long way off from even physically being ready to play 43 Defensive End, which means the prospect of him playing 34 end is really borderline laughable right now. I'm not saying that Campbell wasn't a force as a Hurricane, I'm saying that he was a very good player that opposing teams were able to limit with decent frequency. He's a guy that would be better off going back to school and continuing to develop his body for the next level. Much of the extra weight he has on his body now has been added since his freshman year, which may make some optimistic that he can add quickly, it should also point out that he has a ways to go when it comes to playing at that weight. Can Campbell lift and gain weight to become stronger? Certainly, but can he put on enough to maintain what he does best and transform his game completely into what's needed as a 34 end? Unlikely. You compare him to Richard Seymour, but you forget a few glaring issues. First, Seymour was a tackle at Georgia, not an end. He had the size to really play either spot, and found the perfect in between. Campbell is in no way, shape or form a DT candidate. You say Seymour lacked great strength, even if I concede that, it's only as a tackle, he was certainly more than powerful enough to be a dominant end in that regard. Campbell on the other hand doesn't even have the strength to hold his own right now as a 43 end. Seymour may have been tall like Calais, but had no issues with leverage, his play inside taught him how to play low, not at all like Campbell. And Calais' wingspan may be good for keeping blockers off of him on his way to the backfield, but that's not what the Jets, or any 3-4 team really needs from their end.
I went to SC and its no big deal at all so shut your stupid trap .You think you know everything but you talk a lot of nonesense.I am so sick and tired of seeing you write junk on this board. You must really think that we owe you something because you go to college.Trust me most people on this board are smarter than you and more importantly understand more football than you will ever comprehend with 200 MBA'S from the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.BOMBO CLOT RAS CLOT.MUDDAFLIP.
I disagree with you here. If Kiwanuka can play LB in the 4-3 for the Giants at 6-7, Campbell can play DT/DE for the jets at 6-8(He's already bigger and stronger than KIWI). He does need to fill out, but has the frame to do so.He is really young(true Junior) and if he came out next year would be a top 3 pick. If he runs in the 4.7's he will skyrocket, he will interview very well. It takes most people at that position a year or 2 to develop anyway and is the hardest position to fill in the NFL right now after QB. You kind of make my point in your arguement. What DE/DT do we have now that has the potential to require a double team? What guy because of size and speed has given any OT trouble?
I watched him play a few times and thought "Wow. This guy has something the Jets don't have on the DL. Size and speed. Leverage won't be a problem because the average NFL LT is about 6'6 325. Cambell will be 295 easy in a year, especially with an NFL lifting program. He doesn't have the upper body that Peppers had, but compares more favorably to Williams(who could definitly play in the 3-4). Every time I've heard Mangini, he says the 4-3, 3-4 discussion is a little overrated. With the way defensive players are rotated and the way scheming for different Offenses happens its not that important. We played 4-3 about half the time. I would love to watch Brady throw his short screen over this kids reach. He would be a tool in the toolbox we don't have. We are pretty good at LB(actually loaded) and just gave Bryan (invisible man) Thomas a huge contract to play the same position as Ghoulston. I love Ghoulston, but don't know how much sense it makes right now. Can we cut Thomas salary? I think we gave him 16 million in a bonus.
Kiwi's a tough example, because he's a guy that was having trouble fitting in at DE in a 43 because he needed to get bigger, now he's just an awkward fit back at Linebacker as well. Even still, had he been successful there, I would say that it's easier for a player to learn a new position without changing their body than it is to do one adding a ton of weight. Campbell, whether he could conceivably handle the weight or not on his frame, would still have to completely change the way he plays the game, which just makes it a bad move all around. There's a difference between getting double teamed and holding up linemen, right now Campbell is a guy who's probably going to need time, like you said, just to develop into a 4-3 end that won't get pushed around, to ask him to transform into a 34 guy is basically putting a clock on him to reach his potential before his rookie contract is up. Also, the leverage isn't a factor against Tackles, who are bigger, but it would be inside when guards are factored in, as they would be in our D. I would say that he's not near as physically impressive as Mario Williams was two years ago, and even if he was, the main argument against drafting Mario could be used against Calais. Why take a guy out of his element and try to change the type of player he is in the first round? Especially as high as the Jets were then and are now. Don't get me wrong, I think Campbell can be a phenomenal player in the NFL. Before the year I was guaranteeing he'd be a top 5 pick, top defensive guy off the board, all that stuff. He struggled establishing himself against the double teams that we all probably should have saw coming, which is why he should go back and prove he can be a dominant player. However, if he really wants to come out, a team's going to have to work with him a lot just to get him ready to play. He was literally at something like 220 lbs before/during his freshman year, this is a kid that's even still growing into his 280 frame, much less a bigger one.
I think Campbell could play in a 3-4 very well but wouldnt it be wasting his athleticism, the purpose of a 3-4 end is to be stout against the run and hold your ground, getting a passrush is nice but not the main purpose for a 3-4 end. Also, Bryan(invisible) Thomas was given that contract after having a huge year on the weak side, He was then put on the strong side and his production dropped off dramatically, getting Gholston would enable us to put Bryan Thomas back on the weak side where he is more effective.
I want Gholston a lot more than Calais Campbell...but as a rush linebacker. I think that Calais Campbell could play 3-4 end, and he is so athletic, even at his size, that our NEW defensive coordinator and Mangini could line him up all over the place -- wheter it's at end or rush LB.
1. Talking non-sense (or as you would say nonesense) is the wave of the future. 2. I was just stating why I was in Columbia, SC -- because a lot of people around here like to bash the south. It wasn't necessary for me to put what degree I am earning in my info, but I'm proud of it. If everyone else says that I'm a jerk or a tool for doing it...I don't care. I've been going to school for a long damn time, working my ass off to get where I am. You don't have to care. I care enough about myself already, and that's all that matters. 3. If you're sick and tired of seeing what I write, no one is forcing you to read it. There's thread in the trash talking forum JUST FOR ME. Feel free to contribute. 4. I never said that I knew more about football than anyone, and I'm allowed to have an opinion, am I not? I think that Green Hurricane is wrong about Calais Campbell and he called me out previously, so I'm returning the favor.
I like Gholston too, and we all know how much our staff likes players from the Big Ten. I just feel Campbell is a great fallback option and has as much potential as any player in this draft, but you never hear about him. I wouldn't be disappointed if he was a Jet next year.
I thought they moved Kiwi to LB because their staters were Osi and Strahan (pro bolwer and HOF'er)and they wanted to get him on the field. Plus they were weak at LB.
Who do yout hink should we take if the first 5 guys off the board are McFadden,Dorsey,Jake Long,Chris Long and Gholston? I think Sedrick Ellis could be a nice 3-4 DE. He is big (between 295-305 lbs according to Scouting Reports), very strong, is used to face double teams, sheds blocks, moves well from sideline to sideline and is very athletic. He isn't projected to play a 3-4 end but from the serveral scouting reports I read I think he could succeed in a 3-4.
Idk I think I would cry, I never really thought about sedrick ellis as a 3-4 end, hes only 6-1 which is short to say the least for a 3-4 end. I think he's in the mold of a DROB so if we got Ellis i would be pissed because if they gave him a chance at end they might as well give DROB a chance at end to.
I know he isn't the perfect prospect for 3-4, but I think height for DE is overrated. Besides, who else would you pick if McFadden,Long,Gholston,Dorsey and Long are gone?
If that happens we should trade out. With all of the QBs in this years draft, if someone doesn't draft a QB before us I would be surprised. If no one does, someone will want to and could possibly overpay to get the guy they want.
well it would really suck but i would probly either take Kenny Phillips or Malcom Jenkins because then at least our secondary would be a complete BEAST
if that was the case i'd have no problem taking calais campbell. someone else stated the possibility of him falling to the 2nd round for whatever reason. wow, if we were able to snatch gholston for OLB with the 6th AND campbell in the 2nd, DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
My list in that situation.. 1)trade down 2)Campbell-DE-Miami 3)Otah -OT-Pitt 4)Jenkins-CB-Ohio State 5)Andre Woodson-QB-Kentucky(trade Chad for a 3rd) 6)Derrick Harvey-DE/OLB-Fla.
Falcons would be committing suicide for the 08 and 09 seasons if they don't bring in somebody to play QB. Who knows, maybe they'll go get Derek Anderson. If all of those guys are taken, we need to push the "I'm about to take the best QB" button and hope someone bites. Maybe the Ravens or Bears. We would need to get the hell out of number 6. I'd rather not draft some $15 mil project.
Why would you list Dorsey if you think he's not a fit for the 3-4? The Jets definitely do not have room on the roster for any more misfit toys. Half the roster is there already.
Gholston is my pick but I need to see his play in the national title game and his combine. Its projected to boost him to top 5-10 pick but I just have to see it happen first.
