I know this is going to cause some heat, but I believe under the right circumstances that CP is a top 10 QB in this league. Until we have a solid heir appearant we would be very foolish to let him go, below is a sumation of most of the CP talking points. Discuss. 1. Pass blocking is bad. Any QB needs time to throw. Almost any QB in the league would struggle behind our line. 2. The run blocking is worse. When Pennington has had a running game (and even sometimes without) he has proven to be an excellent QB. CP + TJ + good run blocking + smart play calling = a very effective CP. 3. The play calling is HORRIBLE! This is the biggest problem really. BS play calling has been beyond bad. Last year without a run game BS put everything on CP's back and ran a dink and dunk that surprised everyone. Now everyone hip to our strategy bc we don't have an OL to have a run game, the opposing denfense drops into coverage and they sit on routes. This the reason CP gets picked often on short out routes. Granted, his arm is not strong. But having a strong armed QB is not the solution here. The solution is have a better run game and more creative play calling like pump fakes and throwing the ball deep. 4. CP has a weak arm. Sure, his arm is below average. But his intelligence and accuracy and leadership offset this weakness. Further, the notion that CP can not throw the deep ball is absolute nonsense. The two balls I remember CP throwing over 30 yds this year were both completed. This goes back to play calling. Not throwing the deep ball is not an inability of CP. It is the mental block of BS. We have a weak run game and then we shorten the filed with no long passing game AND we have a QB with a below average arm. Recipe for disaster right there. BS has been nothing less than a noodle brain this year managing the offense. 5. CP utilized poorly. CP does best in a rhythm and timing kind of offense. Everybody hates Paul Hackett, but his WCO was perfect for CP. CP has great timing, anticipation and accuracy. He thrives in this kind of system. Again BS does not cater to CP is this way. A WCO style OC would be ideal for CP. 6. Grass is greener. It can take many years to find a QB in the NFL. Take a look at teams like Miami. They have not had a decent QB since Marino. What meaningful QB has been in Buffalo since Kelly? There are lots of teams that suffer for many years before finding the right guy. CP is the most accurate QB in NFL history. Yeah, he a weak arm but if you give him an OL and a running game and call plays to his strengths the guy is a top 10 QB in this league...easy. We would be very foolish to let him go.
Please, please, let this die for now. The season is over for the Jets. This issue will be moot in time for training camp, anyway.
In no particular order: Brady, Manning, Romo, Palmer, Favre, Roethlisberger, Garrard, Garcia, Brees, Kitna, Hasselback, Bulger. That's the shortlist, but I'm confident in saying I'd rather have any of those 10 over Pennington under any circumstances.
Personally, I think: Brady Roethlisberger Palmer D. Anderson P. Manning Young Garrard Rivers Cutler McNabb Romo E. Manning Brees Favre Hasselbeck Bulger are all better than Pennington right now. That's 16. So it put him right in the middle, and some of those guys are debatable. I still think he's an adequate NFL starter.
I'd add Garcia and Kitna to that, definitely. Pennington's not an average starter, and he has health issues to boot. Nothing against the guy, but I think we're done with him.
Kitna had only 18 TDs and 20 INTs in Martz's offense this year, I think Penninton could do better than that. Garcia is close, but I don't think he's any better or any worse than Chad.
I'd rather have Kitna running the Jet offense then Pennington though...You know what you ge with Kitna. It isn't pretty, but he puts up points, albeit with picks along the way. And Garcia is definitely superior...He threw very few picks, and did a great job running the TB offense this year with a 3rd string RB.
I love Chad and drank the Chad Kool-aid for a few years (I believe he promised a Championship during his stay in NY). He also was a class act and good role model with kids. Sadly, it's time to move on a take pick(s) for him and rebuild this mess. Trade him to Carolina or KZc, both have romored interest...
Rebuild huh? Who are we going to rebuild with? Clemens? Miami said they were going to rebuild when Marino left, where are they? Denver is rebuilding since Elway left, Buffalo with Kelly, Pittsburg after Bradshaw, SF after Young, Atlanta after Vick...ad nausem. We have a good NFL caliber QB and a very good one when he gets suport. It makes NO sense to get rid of him until we are certain we have our replacement.
I hope you're not comparing Pennington to Elway, Kelly, Bradshaw or Young, top 10 QB's of all time let alone in the NFL at the point they were playing. The bottom line is Pennington's biggest asset was his decision making and ability to not give up the football. His lack of arm strength only made it easier for the defensive players to pick off the passes thrown directly at them.
I agree.. except with Cutler, Rivers, and Eli. I guess they're around Pennington's level, but they haven't really done anything to distinguish themselves. And for the love of God.. by no stretch of the imagination is Kitna better than Pennington.
I think Chad could be a productive QB for an already built team...thats true of any QB...but he's not a bad player he's just not a fit for the Jets anymore.
I am sure you understand that the point is that it can sometimes take many years to find a consistent starting caliber NFL QB. The redskins are an even better example, it has been over 10 years since they have had stability at the position. How about the Browns? They have not had a consistent start since when? Kozar, Vinny? What are we going to do if it takes 10 years to find our next top 10 QB? I would be verrry slow to pull the plug on CP. Until we have someone proven better, he should stay.
Well, to be fair, Chad played both games against a team that went 16-0. If Clemens would have played those games, we probably would have lost both of them as well.
