Kellen Clemens should have the full year in 2008 to prove himself

No one is a bigger Chad Pennington fan than me but the organization has already showed that Kellen Clemens is their guy. Bye Bye Chad thanks for all the great memories. Now to the topic of discussion:

The Jets should give Kellen Clemens the full opportunity in 2008. I know he struggled this season and didn't look like the guy we had hoped for but give the guy the benefit of the doubt: He had an inconsistent offensive line in front of him. I say this: if the Jets sign offensive linemen whether its through the draft or through free agency, I think he can be the answer. Kellen needs a solid offensive line to be successful. And remember guys, he had less than half a season to show his stuff. Look at last night, he threw that bomb to Cotchery and Cotchery dropped it. I think if the Jets solve their offensive line problems, the Jets offense can be where they and we want it to be.

He should be given every opportunity to win the job next camp but if he hasn't improved he should not be the starter and waste another season for us. he didn't waste this one, it was lost before he came in but if he played like this again we'd be wasting the '08 season.

I agree. You throw everything out from this year because the line was atrocious.

I think people will be clamoring to get back on the #11 bandwagon next year.

He is entitled to a completely fresh start. A full offseason w/the declaration that he is the starter for the 2008 season. None of this open position casting call training camp at QB s--t. He works entirely w/the starting unit. Develops chemistry & timing w/the receivers. Full grasp of the new O playbook (because I think Schotty will be gone). We declare him to be our man. We get a solid O-line in front of him & try to grab some WRs to give him some weapons.

Even if he isnt the man at the end of 2008 season, then at the very least/worst we are 100% positive (which right now we really have no idea) that he is not the future. At worst we will build up the Offensive personnel in the offseason & draft and then either look to the 2009 draft for a QB or someone else. WE CANT JUMP THE GUN ON CLEMENS YET.

Clemens deserves nothing. He really looks like he has no business being on the field.

Clemens shouldn't be handed anything. I'd like to see a training camp competition between to QBs with some potential. I'd love to bring in a guy like Chris Simms & let he and Clemens battle it out.

I think Clemens should be cut. If he can't get it done with the Jets offensive line and wide receivers who can't catch the ball or get open then forget him! Just cut him now, I'm sure most qb's in the league would have a lot of success with this years team.

A very drastic action , not necassarily the right one though, whilst I'm not confident in him, nothing is gained by cutting him. Work on other areas in greater need then address QB next year.

    i guess that was sacastic.

A hole season without any pressure? hell no. Bring in a guy like Violek and draft Josh Johnson in the 5th or 6th, and let?s see who wins the starting job, if he blows it, give the next guy a shot.

McCown and Simms will beat him out of the job. I don't think he is a starter in the league. The Jets don't owe him anything. He is a second round pick and hasn't earned anything. Bring in a stop gap, fix the defense and o-line and hope to find a decent QB on the way.

This is before or after we fire Mangini and everyone he drafted?

We were so close before we hired that guy.

I'd sign up for that offensive line in a second. What everyone needs to realize too is it's much more than just getting enough time in the pocket. There were times when Baker would stay in to block and Clemens would get enough time but because Baker was helping our terrible offensive line there were less receivers in the pattern leaving those actually going out in tighter coverage.

He does not deserve an entire season all to himself. He does, however, deserve a chance to win the starting position. Which is why we should bring in another QB to make things interesting.

It depends on what we do in the draft and off season. If we go all D and ignore the OL and WR I say keep Chad and let him start.

He's got to earn the job next season and I trust Mangini to have a genuine QB competition next year in training camp.

Bring in a vet to push Clemens at least. Not a "Mangini-guy" (whatever that means), but I'd bring in Culpepper or McCown, but I'm more in favor of Culpepper.

If his knee is healthy, I think he could still be a dynamic player and be a solid backup. I don't expect him to be a starter, but its time to roll the dice a little bit. He was OK on a brutally bad Oakland offense this season. Funny how both backup candidates I'm proposing were on the same team this year (McCown). Cleo Lemon would be another fine option.

Either way, it would be foolhardy to be absolutely committed to Clemens for next season. Let's get a real QB competition this season.
