I hope everything shakes out and this comes to fruition... http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...jets_high_on_arkansas_running_back_darre.html
If things work out that way, I'll be a happy camper. The 'Fins and Rams don't need McFadden. The 'Fins will likely go for Dorsey while the Rams will likely go for Long to replace Orlando Pace who has been riddled with injuries. If the top three work out like that, McFadden WILL fall into our laps. If for some strange reason, the Falcon's get ahead of us, there is a very good chance they could go for McFadden with Dunn getting old and Norwood not being a true starter, they would jump at the chance to get him. Ultimately, if we pass on McFadden it'll be a huge mistake. We can worry about our offensive and defensive troubles in free agency or other rounds. If he's there, we must take McFadden.
Smoke screen? I don't believe for one second we draft McFadden, unless we use him as trade bait. 40mil plus tied into one position is crazy IMO.
I'm not sold on McFadden being the right pick. I see a lot of people say you can't pass on the next Adrian Peterson, but Adrian Peterson has a big, dominant, O-Line in front of him. Adrian Peterson would not be the same back if he was on the Jets. With TJ and Leon already in the backfield, I gotta say the need for O-Line, D-Line, and OLB is so much more pressing we would have to go in one of those directions.
Ok, so imagine we go after the Steeler's free agents: Alan Faneca (LG) and Max Starks (RT). Then our offensive line would look like: Ferguson (LT), Faneca (LG), Mangold (C), Moore (RG), Starks (RT). There is your award winning offensive line with enough backups and flexibility to move people around where you see fit. The Jets could also go after Justin Smith for RE because Kenyon Coleman is just not the answer on the right side. So now we've solved our offensive and defensive line problems, mostly. This gives us the freedom to be liberal with our first pick and grab McFadden. In the second and third rounds we can go after the DT and WR positions as we see fit since we need help in those as well as another OLB. We can gain a LOT of ground in this draft if we do free agency properly.
You're right that free agency will play a big part in who we draft, and obviously if you fill most of our holes with hypothetical off season moves, then drafting a RB makes more sense. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see us sign guys like Starks and Smith (not as sure about Faneca), I just don't know if this front office will make big moves like that. We need players at a lot of positions, but with TJ and Leon splitting carries, I don't think RB is a glaring position of need. On a team with a lot of holes, I don't think you can be looking at luxury items.
As much as I don't like it, I doubt Mangini and the FO decide on a big name RB when we have Jones and Leon and have more pressing needs.
Faneca is done, Steelers fans don't even want him, he will want way to much money for his past accomplishments.
I totally agree. There is no rule that states only OL picked in the first round are any good. I challenge anyone to find me a team with 3 OL that are 1st rd picks, that the team drafted.
I don't think anybody said we had to go offensive line in round one. But if you go running back, all of a sudden all of our need picks get pushed back a round. I wouldn't mind at all getting a guard in the 3rd or 4th round, but we also need D-Line help, an OLB, and, depending on what they think of Bender for next year, a RT.
Yeah, I'm liking this.:breakdance: :breakdance: :breakdance: Guys like this make their Oline better because they don't have to make perfect holes or hold blocks as long for a guy with Mcfaddens speed and vision. I remember last draft the FO was concerned that they needed play makers when they took Revis and Harris. Both defensive players, you have to believe they would not turn down the best play maker in the draft.
Whoever we take at that spot is going to demand that kind of money. If we aren't going to trade out, I'd rather take the best, most marketable player: Darren McFadden. He has the ability to be worth all of that money.
I'd like to believe the Jets could flourish with McFadden. Behind Brick and Mangold plus a beefy free agent or first-day draft pick, we could ride the ship and hopefully build up a successful ground game like Minnesota. But I'm also certain the Jets will defeat Kansas City in the last game of the year, which most likely eliminates us from consideration. A quick glance at rushing yards leaders and I was amazed to see Thomas Jones was almost at 1,000 for the season. Which means plugging in McFadden could net some positive results.
Forget Chris Long.....I want McFadden. Thomas Jones is old and from what I saw this year is not the answer. He will be useful to help break McFadden into the league though, look at Minnesota's situation wit the two stud backs. Also, Leon Washington's great and I love him, but he's not gonna ever develop into a true running back. We need McFadden.
Have you seen our running game lately? It's obviously a glaring position of need. Further, whoever said the comment about how the Steelers don't want Faneca ... thats true, but its because he was too loyal to the former Cower regime. Ultimately, he'll want a lot of money and he'll be our one big payout in free agency.
Someone, please explain this fascination w/Max Starks? Isnt the guy backing up Willie Colon from Hofstra? I'd rather get Stacy Andrews. Granted he is not starting at tackle on the Cincy Bengals, but s--t --- he's behind Levi Jones & Willie Anderson on the depth chart. 2 guys that have made trips to the Pro Bowl. Max Starks backs up Colon & some guy named Marvel Smith.
Max Starks is the victim of circumstance and nothing more. He's a seriously talented player who got edged out by Willie Colon because the Steelers new head coach wanted to shake up the offensive line a little to let them know whose in charge. Ultimately, Starks is still a starting caliber player that would be an upgrade from our present situation.
