I can already hear all of you "have blind loyalty to the Jets and if you want them to lose than your a crappy fan" sun-shiners ready to pounce, but if the Jets win one or two of these last games it hurts this team. Right now, there is a log jam of teams at 3-11 and 4-10. Right now, the Jets would have either the 2nd or 3rd pick I believe. Its conceivable if the Jets win these last two, we fall to as far as 8 or 9th pick. With the 2nd pick we can: get one of the two best players in the draft or (my preference), find a suitor who covets a player available at 2 and get a whole crap load of picks, given the huge points value of pick number 2. What do we gain with two victories? NOTHING. To think we'll build on the momentum of those two wins after an entire long offseason is silly. All it does is hurts our bargaining power on draft day in April. THis team needs lots and lots of help. With the #2 pick, we have a huge bargaining chip to get a volume of quality talent. Sorry blind loyalists, sometimes you have to think with your head, not your heart....
Who cares. Worry about the draft after the season is over. We will pick where we pick. Right now all I want is a jets win over Tennessee, and REALLY want a win over KC. Do you really want to see herm return to the meadowlands and be victorious?
No, you worry about the draft position now in my book. Again, if emotionally on the last game of the season in a meaningless game of (Currently) 3-11 versus 4-10 teams, the Jets eek out a win, than more power too you. If it means we fall 4 draft slots, than it only hurt us...
I'd rather beat Herm, thats for sure. If Chad starts i think we will. But i dont see us beating the Titans
I always get a kick out of these type of threads, like the HC is going to go into the locker room before the game and tell the team, "We really need to lose fellas, and here are some guys to tell you why!" Chad Pennington: "Yeah guys, we can't AFFORD to win these games! If the Jets win one or two of these last games it hurts this team!" Jonathan Vilma: "Yeah, I agree with Chad! Lay down big time! What do we gain with two victories? NOTHING!" Mangini: "YEAH, you tell 'em guys! To think we'll build on the momentum of those two wins after an entire long offseason IS SILLY! All it does is hurts our bargaining power on draft day in April. THis team needs lots and lots of help. With the #2 pick, we have a huge bargaining chip to get a volume of quality talent. SORRY BLIND LOYALISTS, sometimes you have to think with your head, not your heart. NOW LET'S GET OUT THERE AND LOSE BIG TIME. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO!"
You play to win the games you have and let the chips fall where they may. You never play for draft position.
Mangini addressing the team at halftime, week 17. Score, Kansas City Chiefs 10, NY Jets 0: Mangini: "Okay fellas, we're doing good. Just keep on consistently f*cking up. Nugent... where's Nugent? Good job on that missed FG from the 35. We're down by 10 and we want to keep it that way, don't let 'em give the game away. And Graham, is a blocked punt THAT hard to fake? Come on! That punt could have given them the ball on their own 30! try to pull it off in the 2nd half, okay? Clemens, where are you? Oh, there you are. Listen, what was with that long bomb you almost completed? Good thing McCareins was there to drop it again. Christ, I almost had a heart attack because it looked like a completion! Thank God for the replays so they could see how badly he bobbled it and then dropped it. But listen Kellen, if you don't tone it down we're going to win, for Christ's sake. And what was with the INT you were supposed to throw late in the 1st quarter? If you can't get it done I'm inserting Chad... at least I know he been there and done that and knows what to do. And knock off the deep passes, period. There's nothing to gain with that. Take Chad's advice and dink it to death until it either gets picked off or we don't convert on 3rd down. Hank Poteat, I'm replacing you in the 2nd half with the very capable David Barrett! David, get out there and show Poteat how it's done... loose coverage.. missed assignments, poor tackling, you know what I'm talking about, and continue making it look like you're trying. Christ, Poteat is blowing it for us by smothering these guys. And don't make it look too obvious. On the O-line, Ferguson, continue not living up to your resume'. And Clarke, good job... way to let 'em bowl you over without making it look too obvious. And ALL OF YOU... ONE MORE THING! Quit snickering and pointing over at Herm every time he exhibits lousy clock management! You're giving it away and he might even catch on! And for God's sake, when he makes it insanely obvious as to the next play coming, make believe you still don't know it's a draw play coming on 3rd and 15 and go deep to "cover" the deep pass. That'll at least give them enough room to make those 1st downs without making it too obvious. Any questions? Coles, you don't look well enough to play, I don't care how much you beg me to get into the game, you're on the bench. Oh, and Leon... WHERE'S WASHINGTON? Oh, there you are. What the hell was that 65-yard return all about? SHUT UP! I don't want to hear it, okay? Get with the program! For Christ's sake, you almost took it all the way with that one! What the hell are you trying to do? One more return like that and I'm instructing Westhoff to pull you and let McCareins return kickoffs the 2nd half. Now, let's all get out there and do what we've done best all season, GO GET YOUR ASSES KICKED! OH YEAH, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!"
The players will not quit because a lot of them have their jobs on the line... even if they suck, they will at least try. If Mangini truly cares about bargaining power, then the best solution to keep playing hard AND garuntee two losses is to start Brad Smith at QB for the final two games of the season under the guise that Clemens is hurt and we need to evaluate for the future.
I would almost rather draft at 8. Top 3 pick is not a guaranteed good player, and we will pay HUGE dollars for the player. I can NEVER root for us to lose a game.
Correction: If we win one or both of the last 2 games, it hurts our DRAFT POSITION. It HELPS our team in more ways than you can imagine. One of the mort obvious is momentum going into the offseason and next year. Being above .500 following the break gives our players more confidence in the CS and means they will work harder in the offseason. It also gives a better bargaining position for wooing FAs. Plus, as Johnnysd pointed out, 8 is a better position for drafting a solid, well paid guy rather than a massively expensive hit-or-miss guy. Oh yeah, and then there's that whole little pesky thing where you root for your team to win games...whatever happened to that?
I'd rather see some Wins. Besides which if we lose 2 half the fickle fanbase will be clammoring for Mangini to be fired and Clemens benched even more
It's not a matter of what's better for the team until the season is over. You clearly don;t understand the amount of pride that the stakeholders (players, coaches, and organization) put into every single game. What's good for the team is whatever will help us in the next 2 weeks, and right now that's 2 wins. 1 or 2 wins still gets us a great pick, and it will still be of value. We could draft down in round 1 and get another second rounder, or pick up 2 second rounders....I don't see us staying wherever we are at this point...the positions we need require decent players that can do their part every play, not 1 superstar.
Where probally gonna draft some buster anyway , lets show we got some balls and beat tennesee and rape herms team
People make the mistake of assuming that the higher a pick is the better the player they get. Top 5 picks are often hit or miss and always require more money to sign than a rookie should ever be paid. The best value picks in the first round are 15-30 IMO.
Every Year. this is a heart vs head situation. I prefer to look at it this way , we win , winnings always good , lose , we go up in the draft. Win win situation. I just cannot bring myself to actually want to lose , even for the greather good
