I have a bad memory when it comes to this stuff, but how many is too many?

I like Nugent. He's only improved as a kicker, and honestly it's not like theres much better out there.

Unless you have a Vinaterri or something, fans are almost always unhappy with their kicker.

He is alright, I may have cursed him and his whole family on Sunday, but there are bigger problems.

Missing kicks is okay every once in a while. But for a kicker that was picked highest ever, he should be pretty top-tier. Especially from only 35 yards out in crucial situations. A few here and there is acceptable, but all they do in practice is...kick. If anyone on a team were as bad at their jobs as kickers typically are, they'd be...well, Justin McCareins.

It is better to get the klinkers out of your system during a meaningless year such as this. He was, IMO, also in a meaningless situation. It was reasonably safe to say that we would have lost even if he had made the field goal. There simply was not enought time to recover 3 more onsides kicks and kick 3 more field goals because there was no way we were going to get in the endzone.

I will also say this. I have much more confidence in Nugent at this point in his career than I ever did in John Hall or O'Brien.

I was posting this previously in the I HATE J-MAC THREAD about Nugent. One could argue that the Mike Nugent 2nd round draft pick selection was almost as bad as giving away a 2nd round pick for J-MacSucks. I remember the day it happened & was totally against picking a kicker in the 2nd round. The guy steps onto the field for what? 5 or 6 plays per game?? With so many other positions that are on the field for 40-50 snaps per game, I ask you --- is it smart to use a 2nd round pick on a guy that walks on the field 5,6, 7 plays per game?? Granted - those plays could be critical game deciding plays. Granted - the kid was the best kicker to come out of college in decades. I'm just against taking a kicker that high -- period.

Go through every kicker on every NFL roster -- there are guys like Nick Folk (Dallas) & Morton Crosby (GB) that are 6th and 7th round draft picks!!!!! Some of them are freakin’ walk-ons!!!! And they are doing just fine. I would loved to have used that pick on an OL or DL back then.

Mike Nugent is like a thorn in my side, because when I think of him, it brings back horrible memories of Bradway draft day trade for Doug Jolley (when we could have had Heath Miller). We dropped out of the 1st round & watch New England take Logan Mankins who is on his way to a Pro Bowl & our O-line is like a Dutch wall in Denmark. And then Doug Jolley didnt even make 2 seasons w/us because Mangini rightfully cut him after a bonehead unsportsmanlike penalty in an exhibition game against the Giants.

you're right, hitting 14 in a row this year and 22 in a row last season is average...I also forgot about Nugent's ability to hit 10 point field goals...

    What a lame argument!

C'mon, listen I know he has had a bad year, but kickers do go through bad stretches, he did make 21 straight at the end of last year. Right now nothing is going right so everything looks a lot worse than it really is (we aren't the dolphins). He'll be back and better next year along with this team. I still am glad we picked him. Who else do you want as your kicker. Gostkowski has missed some really short kicks lately too. I'll definitely take Nuge over Gostkowski.

He missed one kick in this last 15 attempts, and it was in 35mph winds and freezing rain.

I'd call that solid, nuge is fine.

Here's a question I've always wondered about: When Nugent lined up for that kick, I did not like the angle and I thought to myself that he'd probably miss it. Whenver a kicker is looking a kick straight on, he tends to make it and, whenever he is at that weird angle where he can't kick it straight but can't kick it too far in the other direction either, he tends to miss.

So what's up with this? Is there a technique Nugent doesn't use that he should? Is there some secret? Is it beneficial to do a run play on 3rd down in field goal range to ensure a straight-on kick?

Sebastian Janokowski was a 1st round pick. I believe the Chargers young kicker was a 1st our high 2nd round pick as well. Just needed to correct one of the former posters.

Nugent has been having a really good season, as he did last season, but has improved his touch back percentage rather amazingly.

If we had Nugent in 2005 we would have been playing for the AFC championship in Foxboro, in a blizzard (an actual blizzard hit that weekend). Instead, the games played in Pittsburgh. A kicker can change history.

Seriously, you guys were bashing him for never kicking it into the endzone, this year he fixes it...it gets swept out the door but any mistakes (it's not like Vinatieri didn't lose that one game on a chipshot a month or two ago either) and he's a waste again.
