Hes ranked at #24. If the rest of the league value him that much we could get some serious value for him , personally I would like to see him stay with us as a back up , but he still has something to give in the right offense. KC is at #27 and look who is below him hmy: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/news/story?id=3147842
For all of Pennington's bad picks this year, he still had a pretty stellar quarterback rating. I'll tell you that my whole family is Giants fans and they'd all prefer him to Eli Manning, or at the very least a Pennington-type who can effectively manage an offense and get respect in the huddle. After 50 NFL starts, the book has to be out on the guy. He's yet to have a QB rating over 80, he's terribly inaccurate(which isn't really something you can teach) and he has no presence. He's making a lot of analysts look terrible. -X-
QB Rating is not the be-all and end-all of QB's. Scoring touchdowns is. Terry Bradshaw had very subpar QB ratings in many seasons in which he lead the Steelers to top 10 offensive finishes. Chad Pennington had great QB ratings in several seasons where he lead the Jets to middle of the pack offensive finishes. This is not to defend Manning, who is too inconsistent to be considered a good QB at this point, however it is not because of his rating that that's the case, it's because he vanishes for entire halfs at a time and puts the Giants in deep holes when he does.
I'm with you.... I just shudder at the thought of how legendary QBs like Unitas, Bradshaw, or even our own Joe Willie, would be thought of in today's NFL.... These guys could air it out, make big plays, and win ball-games, PERIOD.... Scoring, moving the team, and winning should be above all else.... The QB rating is a very flawed system for judging the value of a QB...
Namath was three different QB's during his career. The pre-1970 QB who was just a dominant player, the 1970-1974 QB was was injured a lot but still capable of taking a game over now and then when on the field, and the post 1974 QB who was completely played out but not ready to step off the stage yet. You'd have to look far and wide to find another QB who had three such distinct phases in his career and none of them would be as good as Namath was early on. Kurt Warner would have fit at one point, however he has come back to play better late in his career than he did during the injury phases.
Pennington should get at least a 3rd round pick from a team in need of a solid field general. As long as the team has the supporting components, Pennington will do very well.
QB PASSER RATINGS ARE THE WORST INSANE STAT OF ALL TIME. HER IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE ALLTIME RATINGS. Please do not use this to judge a Qb. It is a slap in the face to guys like Bradshaw, Unitas, Aikman, Farve and the Greatest Jet of Alltime Namath. Please don't disrespect these all time greats with a meaningless stat. This list was culled from the Pro Football Hall of Fame archives, which offers a list of every quarterback with 1,500 or more pass attempts ranked by passer rating (as of the start of the 2007 season). We simply updated the numbers for active players (who appear in bold). All-Time Passer Rating Leaders (as of Week 3 2007) Rank Player Rating 1 Steve Young* 96.8 2 Peyton Manning 94.6 3 Kurt Warner 94.2 4 Joe Montana 92.3 5 Carlson Palmer 91.9 6 Daunte Culpepper 90.7 7 Marc Bulger 90.2 8 Chad Pennington 90.1 9 Tom Brady 89.9 10 Trent Green 87.1 11 Jeff Garcia 86.8 12 Dan Marino 86.4 13 Drew Brees 86.0 14 Matt Hasselbeck 85.5 14 Donovan McNabb 85.5 16 Jake Delhomme 85.2 16 Brett Favre 85.2 18 Rich Gannon 84.7 19 Brian Griese 84.5 20 Jim Kelly* 84.4 minimum 1,500 pass attempts
Good List. For my money I'd take maybe 3 of the 14 ahead of Brett Favre over him. More proof that stats don't tell the entire story.
While I actually agree with you that passer rating is a stupid stat, look at this list. *The top four guys all won Super Bowls, 7 combined. *Six of the 20--Manning, Montana, Brady, Marino, Favre and Kelly--are Hall of Famers (Manning and Brady not yet but will be, of course) *Gannon, McNabb, Hasselbeck and Delhomme all started in the Super Bowl *Most of the other guys have at least been in or won playoff games. If anything, this list is maybe the best argument for passer ratings I've ever seen. Keep in mind the pre-1980 guys played when the rules weren't in favor of passing nearly as much as they are now.
I agree that the the four guys you named played in the Superbowl but there are some guys that are not on this list that have won multiple super bowls. I think Hasselbeck and Delhomme were handed super bowl ready teams and were asked to basically not screw something up. Gannon was a very good Qb and McNabb had his one moment in time when he went. McNabb does get alot of completions by dumping it off to Westbrook that raises his passer rating. The only year he was impressive throwing the ball downfield was the year To was there and that was the year they went to the Sb. I think Mcnabb is a great Athlete and a mediocre Qb at best.
McNabb also had his team on the doorstep for about four years and easily could have been in a few Super Bowls in a row. Your best argument here would be a guy like John Elway, he was a great QB in the post-1980 era, his team won back-to-back Super Bowls and he isn't on the list. Then again, he didn't win until the Broncos got Terrell Davis and committed to the run. There's further proof that no QB can do it on their own. The fact that Denver hasn't gotten back there even with Shanahan still coaching and consistently one of the best running games in the league, shows you that you also need a good QB to get there. One hand has to wash the other, there's no way around it.
We get it... still. You don't like Chad... still. What does that have to do with his future career, or his being 24th on a power list, three ahead of the current Jets starter?
This has nothing to do with Chad. The list was sent to show that the Passer rating is overrated. It was more of a defense of the Greats who are not on this list as opposed to Chad being on the list. I actually used Mc Nabb as my example and not Chad. Some one spoke of passer rating and I was trying to show that it can sometime be misleading. Chad is also ahead of Trent Edwards and the Bills are fighting for a playoff spot? Did you read what they said about Clemens on this list. Do you realize we are rebuilding and Clemens will not start to show promise for years. He was not handed a super bowl ready team with a Hof Center and Rb to help his process. He has a 3-13 team that is very bad.
Terry Bradshaw... subpar QB rating but kept getting the Steelers in there because he had a great team around him. Great WR, RB and damn good defense to boot. Put a Terry Bradshaw on this team and see how many Lombardi's he brings home. Not to diminish Bradshaw or claim that Pennington is better, but guys that are gun slingers in the league are just another way to win games... not the only way.
No Qb or one player can do it on their own but a Great Qb can make a good or great team better by making plays or throws himself. Brett Farve is a great example of this. Mc Nabb should have been in more Super Bowls and Elway had the misfortune of playing during a time when the Bills, Packers, Niners and Cowboys had better teams than the broncos as well.
Everyone please re-read this. "Clemens will not start to show promise for years"--are you kidding me? The NFL is a year-to-year league, there are no more long rebuilding programs. How many years are we supposed to wait for one guy to come around? I hate to spoil your wet dream, but if Clemens plays next year and we're not at least in the hunt, we're in the market for another new QB. This is assuming Chad isn't here, if he is he'll be back in. It's truly amazing how bad you ragged on Pennington all year after we made the playoffs and now we're supposed to wait "years" for Clemens to "start to show promise".
Regardless u got no love for the Chadster, soon the hatred will turn to KC cause ain't no one waiting a few years for him to develop. People can fool themselves into thinking they will, but this franchise has zero patience.
Yet I've never seen you mention that Pennington came into the same division the same year as Tom Brady and the Pats dynasty. We even managed to win the division once and make the playoffs three times, but that doesn't register with you.
I have mentioned numerous times that the Ny Jets play in a time with Manning and Brady in the Afc. I have also mentioned that we need a Qb that can compete with the big boys come playoff time and that is my number one reason to bench Chad! We will not be in 13-10 Dink and Dunk playoff games with the elite in this era. That is what Chad needs to win!
