Leon Washington is SIXTH among kick returners?! In a FAIR system, Cribbs would be right when he said that this game could decide who goes to the Pro Bowl.... But under this stupid voting system, Cribbs and Leon could take 3 kicks back to the house each, and Welker would still beat them out....

EDIT: And yes, I know the fans only count for 1/3 of the vote, but the fan vote is usually pretty consistent with the final results, with one or two surprises in there....

Harris may have already surpassed Vilma
ILB David Harris was named today the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for November, so naturally, we peppered Eric Mangini with questions about his budding star.

Harris has been much more productive than the player he replaced, injured LB Jonathan Vilma (knee), raising an obvious question: Is Harris already better than Vilma?

That?s hard to say, but there?s no doubt he?s better in this particular defense, the 3-4 scheme. Asked to explain why Harris? numbers are superior to those of Vilma, who underwent season-ending knee surgery four weeks ago, Mangini replied, ?It changes so much each week that it?s hard to say if Jon was in the same scheme what his numbers would be.?

That was a politically correct way of avoiding the question. The evidence is indisputable. Here?s a comparison of Harris? first five starts versus Vilma?s last five (not counting the Cincinnati game, where Vilma played hurt):

With a strong finish, Harris could make a late run for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, an honor that went to Vilma in 2004. Right now, the favorite is 49ers ILB Patrick Willis (100 solo tackles, one sack). Other leading candidates are Jaguars S Reggie Nelson (four interceptions), Bengals CB Leon Hall (four interceptions) and Texans DT Amobi Okoye (five sacks).

Speaking of Vilma, he said at the time of his surgery that his goal was to return to New York for the game against the Browns. The game is Sunday, and it doesn?t appear that Vilma, rehabbing at his home in Miami, isn?t going to make it back for this game.

Vilma hooked up with his teammates last weekend in Miami. On crutches, he watched from the sideline as the Jets routed the Dolphins.

Leberfeld of Jets Confidential, trying to rip the lid off the James Dearth injury situation, grilled Mangini today. Dearth, fighting an undisclosed foot injury, played last week despite being listed as questionable. Leberfeld asked Mangini to identify the backup long snapper, but Mangini wouldn?t reveal such highly classified information.

Why so secretive?

?Should that guy get in there, it could dramatically affect the rush that you get, depending on how big he is or how small he is or what kind of level of experience he has in that role,? Mangini said with a straight face. ?You really don?t want anybody to be able to key in on that. It wouldn?t be good.?

If Dearth aggravates the injury Sunday against the Browns, and can?t play next week in New England, it could have an impact on the point spread.

WR Jerricho Cotchery, out indefinitely after surgery last week on a broken index finger, missed practice again. Before practice, Mangini said Cotchery ?might be out there,? but he was a no-show during the 30-minute media window. He reportedly might use a specially designed splint that could allow him to play.

KR Leon Washington, perhaps not wanting to fuel the hype for his showdown against Browns KR Joshua Cribbs, has been conspicuously absent during the interview periods this week. On Wedneday, Cribbs told the Cleveland writers that he viewed Sunday?s game as a chance to nail down a Pro Bowl spot.

Right now, the Patriots? Wes Welker is the leading vote getter among AFC kick returners, which is a joke. The fan vote counts as one-third of the overall selection process, with players and coaches accounting for the remaining portion.

Not surprisingly, the Jets aren?t faring too well in the fan voting. As of Tuesday, their leading vote getters were:

KR Washington, sixth place (48,617 votes)
C Nick Mangold, seventh, (83,237)
LT D?Brickashaw Ferguson, eighth (96,099)
ST Brad Kassell, 10th (19,549)

Not a lot of love for the Jets. That?s what happens when you?re 3-9.

Somehow, the NFL will do something to get Cribbs and/or Washington into the Pro Bowl.
