Okay, as long as we're dealing with hypotheticals... WHAT IF... what if Chad's agent shops around and finds out he's not going to get a contract anywhere near $4.8 million from anybody. And what if we shop the trade and find out we can't get more than a 5th Round for him. He comes to us and says, "Pay me $2 million per year for 5 years and I'll stay here and be your backup, I'll mentor Clemens and help with anything else I can." Do you sign him?
I think you are overhyping Chad's value. Again, thats just my opinion. I think you could argue for a 4th rounder, but a 5th rounder is likely.
2 mil over 5 years as insurance policy. That doesn't sound like too much in my opinion. Especially given his experience with the team.
Ummmm We traded Kendall a guard, for a Fourth... Chris Chambers, a WR that touches the ball 6 times a game(maybe) was traded for a second. A successful starting NFL Qb, is worth no less than third. And Trent Green is not the measure here...he's 37, and a concussion problem.
That's what I'm thinking. Then you put more beef on the line and hope Clemens stays healthy. Tui stays on at #3 and keep Brad Smith at #4. You're done with the QB position.
I don't just sign him, I pay for a squadron of hookers to send to his room to celebrate. Regardless of what anyone feels about his talent or ability at this point, the one thing that no one can deny is that the guy is a genius when it comes to the game of football. If nothing else, you're paying for a quality QB Coach for Clemens, who has the side ability to fill in if, God forbid, ever needed. I don't want Chad as the starting QB of the Jets anymore, but if we can keep him as a backup for a low cost like that, I'd keep him unless we were offered at least a second round pick for him. (Which we never would, but at that price, we'd be insane to send him packing for less.)
I convince him to retire and hire him back as a coach. I draft backup Qb or sign a veteran so Chad can coach them to. I never want to see noodle throw another pass as a Jet again!
I'll chip in for the hookers. I've said it before and I'll say it again...with the dearth of quality veteran backups in the league (just look at our boy vinny if you hadn't noticed), Chaddaboy would be great for us at the right price. He knows the system, he has the understanding and smarts, and he's willing to work with KC. The only problem is that he thinks that he can still be a starter. I see this ending like Dante Culpepper...bouncing from team to team until finally realizing his role...it's not gonna be pretty.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking also. If you're his agent, how do you sit him down and tell him that? Maybe only after they shop around a little and find the market (sort of like A-Rod did, not that there's a comparison of any kind here) do Chad and his agent realize maybe his best options are still right here. Chad's made a pretty comfortable living for himself up here in NY. If I'm his agent, I remind him of that and that maybe his arm unfotunately took the worst of it with the injuries, etc., and that maybe it's time to milk the Jets for a little bit more and spread it out so that he adds to his already sizeable nest egg. If he can draw a decent-sized paycheck for basically carrying a clip board around for the next 5 years, is that so bad? Contrast that with moving to some jerkwater town in the midwest and then still possibly bouncing around the country after that, competing every summer in a continuous series of TCs for starting positions against a never-ending chain of young rookies and it's not a terrific scenario. Maybe Mangini and Tannenbaum can pull this off. It'll be interesting to see what happens come January.
Even if Chad stays we still have a backup Qb who can not complete the passes necessary to be a successful Nfl Qb. We need somebody who can step in and still give us a chance to win. Chad no longer does that and that is why he is on the bench. We need to get a decent backup or start grooming a Rookie asap!
I'm in disagreement with you on this. Chad won 10 games last year. With a better O-line, he's still a better backup than you're going to find after weeding through countless has-beens, castaways, "free agents" and rookies. I also think you're probably basing your opinion solely on his lack of arm strength, which, as a starter, is unacceptable, but as a backup, might carry us through. That has to be the only basis of your rejection of Chad, because the rest of the intangibles that he brings to the table are invaluable to the NY Jets, almost exclusively. You won't easily replace Chad with someone who will have his smarts, work ethic, knowledge of our specific system, our personnel, our coaching staff, familiarity with opposing AFC East DEFs which we have to face twice a year, his mentoring ability, his unselfishness, etc., etc.
The guy wins 10 game last year and now he is garbage? Read the Clemens threads, you know the ones about how we can't properly evaluate Kellen because the line is terrible, the play calling is terrible, and the defense stinks. I don't think these things just happened once KC became the starter. Say what you will, but at the time, Chad is better than KC. Do I think he should be starting, no. The jets are a mess and need to develop a QB for the future when hopefully the other pieces come into place. A team like the vikings or the others mentioned would have a fit for Chad. The Vikings have an excellent line and running game and I doubt they want to wait 5 years for TV to be servicible.
I agree. If I'm Tangini, I try to keep him here. And if I have to overpay him a little, I chalk it off to "auxillary coaching expense" or some such other category. An extra $1 million a year for what he could put in Clemens' head alone is worth the price. Overpaying Chad to walk along the sidelines with a clipboard in his hand? Why not? How valuable would he be against Buffalo, NE and Miami twice a year (6 games), in which he knows their DEF and can "coach" Clemens on the sidelines? In any other game, even against NFC opponents, how valuable are his smarts in spotting a weakness in a secondary from the sidelines that Clemens cannot possibly "see" while scrambling around? He writes it on his clipboard and reports it to Clemens at the next break. No... I think we're all selling Chad's contributions way too short when we only think of his arm-strength in terms of backup. This is a whole other role for him and something Tangini needs to seriously think about before dumping him for a 5th, or worse yet, cutting him. Of course, if a good #3 offer comes along, that I'd have to think about.
Trent Green's concussions have nothing to due with his rotator cuff. Pennington can't throw, and that's what you have to do in order to be a QB. Green might be 37, but having a healthy shoulder probably means that he can thrown the ball at least 37 more MPH than Pennington.
