People are watching a league filled with terrible QBs and a bunch of mediocre ones. It is not far fetched to believe that a couple teams with less than desirable QB situations could have some interest in Chad, thinking that he was the victim of a bad OL and overall a terrible team. I hope he goes to the Vikings, I think that is the best situation for him and one that makes complete sense. They play in a dome where Chad has always had success, good D, great running games makes that a place Chad can finish his career with some success.
I also agree with Hobbes... no less than a 3rd (MAYBE a very high 4th). If less than that, we should keep him because I feel he has a value here with us that he would not have elsewhere. That being, he knows our system inside and out (practically helped write it), he's way more familiar with our current players and has relationships with our coaches that far transcends any other guy you're going to bring in (and don't forget, we WILL have to bring someone else in... and at what expense?). But I'd also predicate keeping him on one other thing... he needs to restructure again and big time. He needs to know his value is gone, and I'm not sure he really understands that yet. The major elephant in the ointment with Chad is, as a backup (forget about starter), every opposing defense knows that if the #1 QB goes down and Chad comes in, it's back to game-planning against his arm again (crowd the box, put pressure, cause the Chinese Firedrill, etc.). A decent 3rd-round I'm okay with. Anything much lower and we're only spinning our wheels because we're going to have to find at least a comparable fit or better, and in this QB "sellers market," that may be a downgrade, not an upgrade.
The Vikings are an up and coming team and they have won 3 in a row with Tarvaris Jackson showing improvement and solid play all 3 weeks including a QB rating of 79.9 against the Raiders, 139.2 against the Giants and 110.4 against Detroit. Why would they want to replace a nice young QB who is just starting to get it, has the arm to keep the D honest to help the running game for a broken down 31 year old QB?
OK, to re-cap from all the above, these are the teams who will likely have some interest in Chad: Ravens Chiefs Vikings Falcons - maybe Maybe Panthers I think we geet a third for him. I do also think what Winston says has some merit to the point that Chad will only do well on the right team. He needs a very physical defense which creates a lot of turnovers and he needs a good offensive line. If Chad can find that situation, he can do very, very well. If Chad goes to a re-building team and the team expects Chad to be the nucleus to build from - that would be a huge mistake. I think chad would have a miserable time as a Chief for instance.
The way I see it, the problem is (unfortunately for us), Chad has more value to us than to most other teams. We'd need a 3rd to give him up, but any other team will probably only offer a 4th or 5th.
You're right, Jackson has shown improvement, not exactly against the best Ds in the league but he definetely has shown some improvement. Now whether he can keep improving and whether or not they would have any interest in Chad remains to be seen. Chad is not just gonna be given the starting job anywhere he goes, most likely it is going to be a team like the Vikings that has a young QB that needs competition and/or someone to learn from. I have no idea if the Vikings would have interest or any team for that matter, just that at of all the teams mentioned, the Vikes seem like the best spot for him. Given the landscape of the QBs in the NFL, it wouldn't surprise me if their is some kind of market for a broken down 31 year old Qb that has had success in this league.
Trent Green... the guy that WAS one blow to the head away from permanent retirement. Right... Chad is worth at least a third. Whether they can get that for him is another question.
Chad's last stand as an Nfl Qb in any capacity will be in Kc and that is it. The only ones who think he is any good are NYJ fans and Herm Edwards!
KC would not be a god fit for him, their offensive line is just a glimmer of what it used to be. Tony G is effective but old, Bowe is a deep threat but CP is not a deep ball thrower. LJ got the money, then got hurt. With CP teams would just crowd the line of scrimmage and jump his routes. Makes for a very ineffective offense. Only way to combat that is with a dominant defense, to give him a short field and a dominate defense to open holes despite the above. Sadly at this point in his career there is not much he can do to help an average team win. We will be lucky to get a 5th, and the more likely case is that he will be cut, cause he thinks he is still a starter and will not take another pay cut, besides the Jets are going no where in the next couple of years so why stay.
I've read other posts where people think Chad will be cut. I don't see us doing that because he has more value to us than that. I do know money and Cap are issues, though. But let's just assume (I know) that our FO/CS know they have to continue with our O-line project, something that was only started by the aquisitions of Ferguson and Mangold and something which needs to be continued. Clemens would be a direct recipient of the upgrade and it would also make Chad a better B/U for us because, with protection, Chad had his moments. So this is one more GLARING reason to upgrade the O-line, IMO, that Tangini needs to really focus on, because it helps both QBs (the new guy and the old guy with the weak arm) and thereby solves the problem of keeping Chad as a very decent backup QB (behind a good O-line), should he have to come into the game.
Trent Green was 37 years old and coming off an injury when he was traded. Chad will be 31. Honestly Chad is worth more than Trent Green was at the point that he was traded. That said, I don't think the Jets are going to get better than a 3rd for him and probably more like a 4th. The point about not trading him to Kansas City cheap is that we haven't got a relationship with them that warrants that kind of deal. Terry Bradway accepted less value than Herm was actually worth (he was DEFINITELY worth a 2nd round pick coming off of 3 playoffs in 5 seasons) because he had a relationship with Kansas City that allowed him to rip off the Jets. The only way I give Chad to Kansas City for a 5th is if it's a package deal and they have to take Bradway also.
Honestly, I don't know where people are getting this "he'll be cut" idea from anyway. 1) He's a valuable backup. Of course, no one wants to see Clemens need a backup at this point, but every team needs them. 2) If we cut him, it would affect the cap. I have no idea what the hit would be, but why cut a player, who fills a legitimate need, for nothing? (I'm sure we'd save some money by doing it, but it's ridiculous to just throw money out the window for no reason.) This is a league where there's a QB competition that involved Rex Grossman. We can get at the absolute least a 5th round pick for Chad. Something is better than nothing. Chad will be traded, or will be a Jet next season. There will be no cut.
I know the temptation exists for us to continue to diminish Chad's worth with every completed Clemens pass. But there is a law of diminishing returns on how invaluable Chad is. Like the stock market, at some point he has value to a buyer. I think the FO has to remember eerything that Chad brings to the table for US (and not necessarily for anyone else).. the intangibles, the experience, the knowledge of the system, the "mentoring factor" for Kellen, etc. All of that has value (as I said before, unfortunately, mostly to the Jets and the Jets alone). At some point, if offered a 5th Rounder or whatever, if we're confident our O-line will improve (and it damned well better), then I could see us saying, "Screw it. Let's keep him. He's more valuable to us as a B/U now than any 5th Round pick."
I guess I am confused how Chad is done. He was our offense last year on a average team and won 10 games. I don't know how it was possible, but our running game got worse this year and the playcalling went from creative to predictable and absolutely awful. Everyone agrees he has a weak arm so our wonderfull OC calls about 15 outs a game. Then the last week, doesn't call one with our strong arm QB. I think Chad was the scape goat this year and some other teams probably feel the same, but won't publicize it to drive his trade value down. I see nothing positive about keeping Chad on the team. He stepped down gracefully this year, but he wants to play just like anyone would and wants to continue his career. Chad will not be the same teammate here next year if he is forced to stay just like anyone else in the same situation. The best thing to do is part ways.
I agree. I do not see how Chad can stay and be happy. His future lies elsewhere. I do expect him to go to another team gracefully and with class, though. I do not expect him to badmouth the Jets.
