The whole college football system has become a joke. This season proved that we need a playoff but the bowl selection has proved that the entire system needs to be dramatically overhauled. It is no longer about on-field accomplishments. It is about luck, money, and power. The rankings have pretty much just become throwing darts at a wall covered in logos. Ohio st. hasn't played a game in 3 weeks and they get in with a high school schedule. LSU loses to 2 unranked teams and gets in. Kansas gets a BCS bid but the Mizzou team that was #1 yesterday and beat them doesn't because they have to play a conference championship game that other teams don't. Illinois gets a BCS bid but BC, Clemson, ASU, and Florida don't. VaTech doesn't get to play for a NC even though they lost to 2 top-14 teams (both #2 at the time). Why does Hawaii get trashed for a weak sched. and barely squeak into the BCS yet other with weak scheds. dont get questioned? Why does BC play in the fourth best ACC bowl even though they finished second? Its a joke and is becoming disgusting. I have a feeling CFB is going to deal with ALOT of backlash because of this very soon.
Hawaii got "trashed" because they are a mid-major team. Pat Hill of Fresno State has been trying to get rid of that label for years now. Hill has schedule UCLA, Wisconsin, and Kansas State next season, and if Fresno wins out, they SHOULD get a chance at the National Title, because the BCS won't be able to use the weak schedule excuse against them. College football will never be a joke though. The BCS has always been a joke, but the sport will never be.
That's the problem though, the BCS IS turning college football into a joke. The BCS and bowl game system themselves are the problems, but it is corrupting CFB as a whole. Its impossible to take it seriously and it is a shame because people the casual fan is starting to get fed up and will abandon the sport because of the fraudulent BCS. the Hawaii thing was just an example, but didn't boise st. prove last year that an undefeated mid-major should be given respect
College football is starting to lose me what with OSU in the national title game and the Missouri-Kansas thing. When I watch a college football game, the sport is fine. When I am not watching a game, college football is ridiculous. When we're not watching a game we are talking about schedule strength and rankings and that is ridiculous to me. Stuff should be decided on the field like most other sports. (I guess figure skating might be the only other sport left to judges. Maybe you could also say boxing for fights that have to go to the scorecards.) Then there are boosters and sanctions and recruiting violations and all that mess. Give me a good game to watch and I'll like it. If not, then college football sort of sucks.
Here is the problem, there is too much stock in history. Think about it Ohio State plays a joke non conference schedule and lose to Illinois. Kansas plays a joke non conference schedule and loses to a legit Missouri team that beat that Illinois team that beat Ohio State in Columbus. If Indiana was to have the same non conference schedule as Ohio State and lose one game in the Big 10 there is no way they'd play for the title because they weren't good in 1967. They would have started the season unranked and therefore when they lost that one game they would have dropped. Especially if they did like Kansas did and lost that last game of the season. It's a seriously flawed system and it won't be changed because college football doesn't want it fixed. The government should be investigating CFB instead of baseball. I'm not so pissed about LSU because I don't think you should hold 2 losses both in 3OT against them plus they also won a "playoff game" whereas with Ohio State they lost their last game at home and beat absolutely nobody and I don't wanna hear that Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan were somebody this year because you don't lose to Appalachain State @ home if you are. What got me was when the clown on ESPN News said Oklahomas win over Mizzou didn't impress the voters because Mizzou doesn't have the tradition. He said had tehy beaten Nebraska in that game they would have jumped to #2. What? They beat the #1 team in the country how is there no stock in that? They beat #1 regardless of tradition......
The problem with the BCS is that no matter who was picked for the title game this year, there still would have been plenty of uncertainly. We don't know who deserves the championship. There needs to be a playoff.
exactly, if there can be a case made for more than two teams playing in a NC, something needs to be done. If a case can be made for more than half a dozen teams, then something seriously needs to be done.
The people that are in charge of the BCS are never going to give respect to a mid-major conference. It's all about the money. Boise State beat Oklahoma last year, Hawaii has a chance to beat UGA in a hostile enviroment this year in the Sugar Bowl. Both Boise and Hawaii play in the BEST mid-major conference, the WAC. Urban Meyer took Utah out of the Mountain West to the BCS Fiesta Bowl and they also won. There needs to be a playoff, so EVERY good team gets a chance. I hope Fresno State runs the table next year and makes it three in a row for the WAC -- then maybe they give us some respect, but I doubt it.
Then the game will be interesting especially since this is the 1st chance all year to get healthy since in the Big ten there was no bye.
They seemed to have many byes on that week sched and LSU's "bye" was last week as their season ended but LSU had to play another game against another tough opponent.
you are as persistent as a cockroach, however I won't allow your argument get in the way of my team's bowl game. I've waited too long for that to happen.
10 games? who plays just 10 games, Bunch of pussies no wonder why they got a bowl game if they bothered to play other teams who know where they would be playing.
huh?? we played 12 games, there was just no breaks in between which is why the season ended so early.
He has a point. It is this exact thing that i am saying is wrong with cfb. Some teams play 12 games, some 13. What is fair? Nothing, NOTHING about this system makes sense. I realize that I am using BC alot in my examples but that is because it is the perfect target for me (Mizzou is even better but i don't know much about them). This question was asked by a reporter at the Peach Bowl press conference (one of the bowls that skipped over BC): Question: What does it say about the bowl system that for three straight years Boston College has beaten Clemson, for three straight years they've had a better record and for three straight years they're going to a lesser bowl? To which a rather convoluted statement that doesnt answer the question was given: Stokan: "You look at the total picture. You want a team that's wining its way in. You want a team that's successful on its way in. We're finding that with some of these championship games, in some cases where there have been disappointments with teams having a chance to go to a BCS bowl and then losing. We've had long talks with the commissioner and he's happy with our decision. We look forward to taking BC in the future. We're ecstatic to have Clemson in our game." Explain why the 2nd place team in the ACC, one that lost in its TITLE GAME gets relegated to a bowl against the 6th best team in the weakest BCS conference this year ? Why does a #1 Mizzou tam that loses (against a favored opponent) in its TITLE GAME get bumped from the BCS altogether while an OSU team that DOESN'T EVEN PLAY IN A TITLE GAME gets a NC bid. See what i'm getting at? BC and Mizzou lose in a game that other teams don't even have to play and get punished for it while Illinois and OSU get rewarded for not playing (and Georgia can be included too, even though i believe they have a strong argument for NC)
why doesn't a 2-loss USC team get penalized for a weak sched. (97th SOS) while undefeated Hawaii almost doesn't (113th SOS)? These are all rhetorical questions that i am throwing out there just to prove a point, some i feel very passionate about, some i couldn't care less about.
Dude, for the second time -- it's all about the conferences and the money. Hawaii is in the WAC, which is a mid-major conference. USC is in the PAC-10, which is a big time BCS conference. The WAC will never get any respect in this "computer" driven BCS system. How does USC 97th in SOS? They played Oregon, UCLA, Oregon State, Nebraska was ranked 14th when they played, Arizona, Arizona State, Washington, and California...that's a pretty tough schedule. They did play garbage teams with Notre Dame and Idaho...and they lost to Stanford, but their schedule is much harder than most team's especially Hawaii. I know this and I'm a WAC team fan with Fresno State. I'm all for the WAC getting press and making it to the BCS, but Pat Hill at Fresno State is the ONLY reason why Boise State and Hawaii made it to the BCS. I'm not trying to take anything away from Boise's and Hawaii's players, but they wouldn't have been considered as BCS at large teams if Fresno hadn't made their run in 2001. Pat Hill showed the nation that his team could play with the big boys. Fresno has been scheduling TOUGH teams since the BCS started in '98. Boise State and Hawaii made it into the BCS with cake schedules. IF Fresno State ever runs the table and makes it to a BCS bowl, Hill and the Bulldogs will be doing it the right way: Scheduling tough teams from BCS conferences and beating them. 2008 will be the Bulldogs year to make a BCS run, and if next year is every bit as crazy as this one was, Fresno has a shot at playing for the National Title, because of their tough schedule (UCLA, K-State, and Wisconsin).
you're missing the point. These are all small (some of them are pretty big actually) examples trying to point to the big picture. Side note: i could be wrong about USC's SOS, i just google'd it real quick
I'm not missing the point, you are. You seem to think that Hawaii should have the same chances as USC in this BCS system and that will NEVER happen. The teams aren't on the same level, at all. The poll voters and the guys that run the BCS will never give Hawaii or any mid major team more respect than USC -- if USC lost 3 times and still won the Pac10, the BCS would still give them the National Title bid over Hawaii, even if the Warriors were undefeated. Teams like Hawaii won't be given a "fair" chance until a playoff system is started in college football.
