In today's Star Ledger, Hutchinson discusses Newman's INT TD return of Clemens. In the piece, poor OL protection and Clemens staring down Cotchery are cited as reasons for the pick, but I blame the play calling.

Several players earlier, Clemens tried to throw the same short out pattern, but the ball was batted down at the line. Good thing, because the Dallas CB had broken inside of the Jets receiver and was poised to take the ball back for a TD had the pass gone through.

At that point, it was clear to me, the Cowboys were jumping every short out and Shottenheimer should've started calling in cuts or a stop-and go to take advantage...but they didn't. They just called the same pass play again, and Newman was gone.

    THE SITUATION

The Jets trailed 14-0 with 6:27 remaining in the second quarter and the Cowboys were looking to deliver the knockout punch. They connected with the Jets facing a third-and-6 from their 46 yard line. QB Kellen Clemens dropped back to pass. ... Hello, Newman. Cornerback Terence Newman, that is.

    WHAT HAPPENED

Clemens, who was under duress from the opening snap, stared down WR Jerricho Cotchery on a short out pattern. Clemens was looking to get rid of the ball quickly -- he had little time to throw all game.

Lining up on the left side, Cotchery ran a quick out pattern, and Newman was waiting. He jumped the route, intercepted Clemens' pass and sprinted 50 yards untouched for a touchdown. Game over.

It was Clemens' sixth interception of the season and third an opponent has returned for a TD against the Jets. Chad Pennington has two.

"Newman made a really nice break on it," Jets coach Eric Mangini said. "It was an option-type route; he guessed and he guessed right. Sometimes that happens. He made a nice play. You've got to be really tight on those routes."

    WHY IT HAPPENED

The Jets' offensive line had its worst game of the season, and Clemens was trying to make something happen. After the game, Clemens praised the Cowboys' game plan, saying they were extremely well prepared for having only two days of practice leading into the Thanksgiving Day matchup.

Why is Shott and half the people on this board in love with out patterns. There is very little upside and a lot of risk. How many out patterns did Joe M. throw to Jerry Rice? Seems like they had a decent offense.

When you have two seconds to throw the ball, and are basically playing with one WR, that is one of the only plays where the WR can come close to being open withough having the QB get sacked.

There is nothing that can't be fixed with a deep threat and a few more seconds of pass protection from the O-line!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't these the same mistakes Pennington was being crucified for? Staring down receivers, DBs jumping routes, dumping off, etc...

Do you have a point here other than comparing a green QB who has not reached his ceiling to a seasoned vet who has more than likely topped out?

Yes he has a HUGE point. The same problem is occuring with either QB behind center and it has NOTHING at all to do with Chads arm, nor does it have anything to do with Kellen being green. It has everything to do with the Oline, and play calling. Thats the point.

You forgot to mention 1/2 of a QB too.

Kellen played against the Steelers, Ravens, Cowboys and Redskins who have one of the best secondaries in Football. Chad had the Bills Twice, Bengals, Eagles and the mighty Patriots. There is a HUGE diff between the two teams they have both played against.

Everything about this season is hell accept for the emergence of the two rookies clemens hasnt been very good but no Qb will ever be good behind that terrible O-Line.

This is exactly right. The out is one of the worse passes to throw without protection because you know CB are going to be sitting because you don't have time to go down field.

Clemens hasnt been good, ( he was on when he needed to be against the Steelers) but he hasnt been terrible. If anyone expected much more from a young, 1st time starter with this terrible line and depleted WR core, you are sadly mistaken.

I am not even going to throw the o-line under the bus, just the coaching. The play calling is bad, but the scheme is worse. It always seemed that Chad was fighting his natural playing habits to run the offense and the same is with Kellen. He seems very comfortable once he is out of the pocket and the play breaks down. I think it is time for house cleaning in the offensive side of the coaching staff.

These kind of routes are nortorious for easy pickins (No punn intended). Remember vinny's pick against the Raven's . Or all of Chads picks from this year. I find it very displeseing that Clemens Is mentioning that he feels Shotty should have taken advantage of this type of coverage ; if the 2nd year rookie is talking then Im sure there are alot of grumbles in the locker room!

One thing I really don't like is the out is our hot route on blitzes. I played corner in college and an out route on a blitz was about the easiest play to make. It is a long throw and a hard throw. With the 10,000 out routes we have ran this year, where is the out and up. That takes no longer than the out route because the QB can lay it up. Also last year we ran quite a few slants haven't seen many this year. I know coles scored a couple times on the slant and go last year.

Didn't the announcers mention that right after the INT?
