The Jets need 2 guards and a better RT and D'Brick needs to step it up, but beyond all that, it occurs to me that one thing missing from the Jets recent successful seasons has been the presence of a true blocking Tight End. There are two ways to beef up a line, get beefier players (something I endorse), and use more 2 TE sets (something today's best teams are endorsing). During the Herm Edwards years, amidst the frustration of Anthony Becht's sometimes suspect hands, Pennington enjoyed the protection of having that stout 6th lineman. During the Parcells years, amidst the frustration of watching Kyle Brady fall down at the slightest contact from a dimunitive cornerback, there was the stout protection he provided for Vinny and the Jets. What made me think about this was watching today's elite teams, Dallas, Indy and, of course, New England, and their deep rotation of TEs. One of the reasons Tom Brady has been upright this year has been the presence of 7 lineman across his front line from time to time. Oh year, and one familiar K. Brady seems to have fit in nicely there. And you go can further back to the mid 80's and the era of the Hogs. Grimm and Jacoby got all the credit, but don't forget Gibbs frequently had 2 and 3 TEs on the field allowing a rotation of journeyman Redskin QBs to enjoy SB success. I'm not talking about spending any high draft picks, but when Tangini is figuring out how to fix this offense, they might want to consider solid blocking TEs in their equation.
Things I miss at this point: Kevin Mawae, Jumbo Elliot, Jason Fabini, Randy Thomas, Kerry Jenkins, Kareem McKenzie, Dave Szott, and yes, even Pete Kendall (although only in the company of 3 or 4 of the above.) I just can't believe that the Jets went from having one of the top 5 offensive lines in football to the collection of losers we're watching now. Mangold is the only player on this line who could have made the Jets from 1998-2004, and he'd have been sitting on the bench behind Mawae.
We miss a good oline , depth at wr , te and cb plus a good NT and pass rush. Apart from that we are set
I would like to point out that Becht's hands were not suspect; they were made of rock and balls would naturally repel themselves leaving us in jaw-hanging dismay. Brady was not much better. Chris Baker is good enough. Get better OG's and and OT and Chris Baker will do fine.
I don't miss Kyle Brady. Nor James Farrior or Anthony Becht for that matter. Just because some of them want on to have some success away from the Jets does not mean they are worth their weight in king's gold. The fact is that scheme and how you use your personnel is more important than having blocking TEs. Antonio Gates isn't much of a blocking TE yet SD had a lethal offense with a great running game under Marty. Now that the scheme has changed, the team is in the can. Give me a good coach with good schemes and an open mind and a willing to innovate with his game plans, I'll give you a consistently winning football team.
C it is that good enough usage or serviceable talking of our players which indicate to me that U are willing to accept the same 3rd tier players year after year which will mean no SB year after year
Well not exactly. I have been viewing intently this year, as you have; and have seen our inherent weaknesses. I think Chris Baker gets a lot better with a better offensive line in place. We need wholesale correction at both gaurd positions and an OT as well. If we accomplish this, than I beleive Chris Baker will really start to excel. The guy can catch; I have seen him catch many that others would never be able to. He has decent size and I think his blocking skills can be made better with more support from the front line.
Our running game seemed to have gone into the shit house when we shipped Anthony Becht and at just about the same time Tampa Bays finally took off…there is probably something to it. I still see two of the three balls thrown to him every other week bounce off his stone hands religiously...
Jumbo and Fabini false started way too much. But Kevin Mawae, Randy Thomas, Kareem Mekenzie Yes. How much better would our line be with these guys.
I agree. It seems to me that we have never been happy with our tight ends, nor have we involved them in the same manner a jeremy shockey/tony gonzalas TE is used.... never could figure this out......
A blocking tight end can make a very good offensive line great but isn't going to do much for a line that is considered mediocre on a good day.
I love Jets fans. When Becht was here, most of you couldn't run him out of town fast enough. We needed a playmaking receiver at TE, and who gives a shit about blocking? I swear, before Becht left, I was arguing that the Jets should keep him because he was such a great blocker, and I was ridiculed for it. Now that he's gone, people are making noise that his blocking is missed. Being a Jets fan is never appeciating what you have until it's gone. For the record, I'm not singling out GSour at all, but the general Jets fan population. It shouldn't be long before Jets fans start clamoring for an accurate passer, even at the expense of arm strength.
I agree with you. I was defending Becht when his contract was up. I was a closet Anthony Becht fan during his tenure. Oh well. I can still use him in Madden.
As a receiver he was terrible, which is odd considering he was a stud at WV. But his blocking was a beautiful thing.
