What would you be willing to give up for him? Weigh in whether you are a Yankee, Met or Red Sox fan. I would be willing to give up Hughes, Cabrerra and a AAA prospect. I would never give up Chamberlain and would be hesitant to give up Cano.
If I were Omar, I would not chase Santana. He will get a 6 year contract for about 150 million, or in that neighborhood. I would go after Dan Haren who is two years younger, is tied up for the next 3 years at about an average salary of 6,000,000 and actually had numbers comparable last year to Santana. Apparently he can be had for Millege, Heilman and top outfield prospect Fernando Martinez.
I would give up just about any combination of Mets prospects it took to get him, as long as they can get him resigned.
I'll take a pass. He's either going to be resigned by the Twins, or become a free agent, at which time, we'll surely pay him ridiculously more than anyone else is willing to. The only way he leaves the Twins via trade is if some team throws an entire crop at them. I can't see him being a Yankee for any less than some combination of Hughes, Chamberlain, Wang, Cano, Cabrera. At least 3 of those players would need to be part of the deal. Thanks, but no thanks.
If I could somehow get him without giving up Buchholz, Ellsbury, or Lester I'd do it, otherwise not. At this point, Santana would be a luxury for the Sox, not a need.
If I were the Yankees, I would trade Joba before Hughes, but ideally neither of them. Melky, Kennedy, Horne. Probably not enough to get it done, but I believe that he will hit the FA market next season. IMO, he is not worth 3 top prospects AND $150 mill.
If that was what it took to make the trade happen, I have 3 words: Git ir dun But I highly doubt that's enough. I can't see the trade happening without at least one of Joba or Phil. I'm in total agreement though. He's not worth 3 top prospects, and that much money. I really think he'll be a FA. There's no reason a team should grab him now, when they can have him for free in 12 months.
He also has a full no-trade clause and has stated that he loves pitching in Yankee Stadium. I don't have the actual quote, but i'm not making it up. He has the right to control where he goes, and he loses nothing from hitting free agency next year, in fact, he'll probably end up with more money that way assuming he doesn't have a horrible year.
There is less then a 0 chance he will sign with the Twins and the Yankees are definitely in this until he's either here or with another team. Steinbrenner has pretty much said that. In fact he is in NY today to discuss it with Cashman as well as discussing the 2008 budget.
A new contract will be part of any trade. He will never see free angency unless the Twins get too crazy.
Haren would finish something like 5-2 for the year...we can't give up Heilman until our bullpen concerns are assuaged. Other than that, that sounds great; are they really asking for that?
How do you figure Haren would finish 5-2? Other than that, I read on Matt Cerrone's Met blog (one of the more popular ones) that an executive from another team said thats what Oakland is asking from the Mets for Haren.
I was joking...My point was the bullpen would blow all his leads and he'd have a ton of NDs. Still holds true...If Heilman leaves, then it's Wagner and Feliciano. That's really the whole list.
