I'm waiting for an owner, any owner, to do something along the lines of: In honor of (C-Mart, Chrebet, some other player known for giving up their body for their team) I'm setting aside X million dollars to pay for the ongoing medical care for our retired players. That would impress me. I think I'll be waiting a while. No one wants to admit it isn't taken care of well already.
They know the risks of playing a contact sport. They make plenty of money to take care of themselves for the rest of there lives so long as they spend and invest wisely. They're football players not Marines.
What has any owner Kraft, Jones, Snyder or otherwise given their retired star players? If you work for a company for 25 years you are lucky if you get a Rolex and a thank god now he's gone party. Then they change the name on your former door the next day...and never mention you again. Such is life.
regarding the not buying anything from J&J comment, I have to say that's misdirected. regardless of your feelings towards woody, J&J is a great company with outstanding business ethics. and Woody isn't really affiliated in any way with that company, besides a very fractional ownership. but by that standard, you'd have to boycott every company in his portfolio, which would probably include most of the fortune 500 company. I recently finished up my MBA and one of the companies that is often showcased for being a good corporate citizen is J&J. especially the way they handled the tylenol recall, it was a perfect demonstration of taking a substantial risk to your PR and a hit to your pocketbook in order to do the right thing. in the interest of full disclosure, I do not work at J&J, but I do have a friend who does. and for what's worth, I have no issues with Woody. If my company gives me a $30k+ watch when I retire and a framed jersey, I'd be pretty happy.
Oh come on people- those weren't just tickets on Delta. Those were tickets ANYWHERE Delta flies in the US. I mean, the possibilities are endless, don't you think? Mobile AL, Check Butte, Montana, Check Boise, Idaho, Check Jacksonville, FL, Check You name it, he can fly there. Bunch of jealous SOB's.
These guys today made millions playing a game. Do you think it really makes a difference if the Jets give them a $50,000 car? Martin and Chrebet probably own 15 cars each. Martin has enough money he wants to be a part owner. The players don't need the gifts. It is the recognition that matters. Give me a break.
