the problem with your position is that those aren't the only two options, and any team would be far better off with the third possibility -- 11 talented guys that give everything they got.

remeber folks its always easier to go from 1-15 (or thereabouts) to 9-7 and possible WC status....

the most difficult job possibly in sports is to go from 9-7/10-6 to dominating 13-3 and an AFC championship game......

the jets have been down that 10-6/9-7 road several times and only once have they follwed up a 9-7 campaign with a dominating 12 or 13 win campaign - 98 jets.

and that team crash landed soon after.

And the crash landing was the direct result ot two things:

    1. The failure of Bill Parcells to have an adequate backup QB on the roster in the event of a Vinny injury. He admitted this was the case in training camp, essentially saying "some times you just roll the dice and hope."

    2. The Vinny injury.

Despite both of the above Parcells was a very good coach and solution finder and he eventually got the Jets righted again and prevented a catastrophe.

...and they usually go to the party. Indy Colts are just that , but the Pats IMO are the team with less talent but give 110% which is why they keep beating them.

I think this is the rub. I like Mangini A LOT, I reall do. I believe in his program and like what he's trying to do. However, I think he might be working guys to much during the week and during the preseason. The main point in the initial post for this thread is that the Jets have been in pretty much every game this season, UNTIL the 4th quarter. Maybe with some rest the starters would have some energy to close out games. I think Tom Rock had something on his blog this past week to this effect.

if bill parcells or bill cowher came out of retirement next year to coach the jets, we would be 8-8 next year, 11-5 the yuear after and 13-3 super bowl champs the following year, i better stop drinking

That's not an impossible scenario. I definitely believe the 8-8 next year.

Bill Parcells already coached the Jets and failed at your scenario. Maybe you forgot.

The only reason Parcells failed was that Denver had an illegal team. Denver violated the salary cap to beat Parcells in the AFC Championship game. We got screwed.

We had six turnovers that game, and Martin rushed for 14 yards; Terrell Davis had over 140. That's why we lost, I'm sure.

The defense that generated those turnovers and the offense that blocked for TD were paid with funds that were not available to other teams. That game was close in the first half and it wouldn't have taken much for the outcome to go the other way.

The Jets had a 10-0 lead at halftime. Then they died in the locker-room, probably to the altitude, and Denver dominated the seond half.

Clemens can become the next Peyton Manning, but this team is far from contending because the defesne is awful. A good defense wins the close games the Jets are losing. It causes turnovers and gains field position and makes plays to shut down the other team's potential game winning drives at the end of games. The Jet defense is one of the worst in the league this year and one of the worst in Jet history. Until the defense gets a major fix in terms of personnel and philosophy, this team is not going anywhere for a loooong time.

Let's face it. Scott Pioli's career was made by Mo Lewis. If Lewis doesn't knock Bledsoe out, Belichick is probably a defensive coordinator for another team right now. No way the Pats knew what they had in Brady and without Brady, the Pats would have no titles. Now they are like the Yankees and Red Sox where top free agents will play there for almost nothing to get a ring. That makes the GM job pretty easy.

Dungy was put in the same class as Herm Edwards on this board for years - a player's coach that would never win.

As for Billick, have you watched a Ravens game this year? He might be the worst coach in the NFL right now. The Raven offense is so bad it is a joke. McNair is a human turnover, but Billick keeps trotting him out there. The defense that was the best in the NFL last year has lost it because they can't overcome 5 turnovers and no production. They have one of the best backs in the NFL, but they don't give him the ball. They have had 1st and goal from inside the 5 dozens of times this year and I think McGahee got the ball once. He will be fired at the end of the year unless the Ravens win out. Billick????? Billick?????? The offensive genius who hasn't been able to find a QB or assemble an offense in 10 years? You can do better than that arrogant jerk who rode a good defense and a ton of luck to a Super Bowl title in a strange year in the NFL.

Billick's one of 5 coaches in the AFC to win 12 games in a season twice since 2000 and one of 3 (the 3 I listed) to win a super bowl.

I think that kind of speaks to where he ranks at the moment in the pantheon of AFC coaches. I agree that his era is coming to an end in Baltimore and that he'll likely be somewhere else next season.

His era is coming to an end because he has done a terrible job. I could name 30 coaches I'd rather have as the Jets' HC than him. IMO he stinks as a coach. Any team with a defense that good would have been in multiple Super Bowls with even a mediocre offense, but he has been unable to put an offense on the field that can score TDs. This year they are unwatchable and it is coaching. Pennington got criticized this year, but McNair's play this year makes Pennington look like a HOFer. Yet Billick trots him out week after week. It's a joke.
