I saw this posted on another forum. Basically I think it a really good short report and what most of us have been saying all along: Overall Grade: D New York Jets (1-8) Right Answers: Any time you go from the playoffs to officially eliminated from the playoffs by Week 10, not much has gone right for your team. The team still has a solid offensive line to build around with young LOT D'Brickashaw Ferguson and C Nick Mangold. Even though Thomas Jones has struggled, it has been more of a reflection of the team's inability to throw the ball to open up the run. The Jets are getting good overall production from their 2007 rookies, CB Darrelle Revis and ILB David Harris. The Jets have now gone to second-year QB Kellen Clemens, who just oozes talent and is going to develop into a very good starting QB in the NFL. This team is getting a lot of young players valuable experience, which will help in 2008. Wrong Answers: Expectations were too great for a team that does not have a lot of talent. The Jets went 10-6 last season on the strength of one of the easiest schedules in the NFL. That is catching up with them now, because they still lack talent. The team traded OG Pete Kendall for all the right reasons (mainly because he was disruptive in the locker room), but his loss hurt the production of the offensive line. Defensively, the Jets are trying to play the 3-4 defense and just don't have the personnel to do so. The team lacks a true run-stopping NT and doesn't have an OLB who can consistently get pressure. Those are the two main ingredients needed to be a good 3-4 defense. What's Next? Right now, they are just playing out the season. Clemens will start the remainder of the season and get valuable experience for 2008. The Jets are playing young players on defense who will gain experience. This team is not going anywhere fast, so they are just trying to build momentum for the 2008 season. Insider Arcticle If anyone wants I can post other grades as well, I am an Espn Insider. FWIW
That's pretty much right on the money. Expectations were off the chart after overachieving last year. At best we should have been a .500 team this year. I'll take a shitty season and get Clemens in the mix rather then being 8-8 and Chad playing 16 games.
I don't get it, what's with the "right answers" and "wrong answers" thing......i kinda of agree with the wrong answer, what does that mean!?
ITA. Now look at the defensive points. 2 Players missing. not 5 not 7. 2. And probably one O/Lineman, and a Speed receiver. One decnet Draft and off season.
If we can see what is wrong, everyone else can, too. As much as I hate to say it due to the time involved, this year may work as a blessing rather than a curse.
Good article - right on the money. Just hope the experience gained by our young players helps out next year and sorts out questions about next years draft and free agency.
8-8 with Chad? That went out the window a long time ago. This team would win 3-4 if Chad started the whole season. We'll probably get the same with Clemens.
Only if they do whats needed this offseason....we can't sit back and watch other teams spend while we get the bottom of the barrel FA's. Owner/FO must open their wallet. Shit gets real old quick IMO
The Nt and the Olb are the main ingredients that are missing and the main parts. We still need two more cb's who can cover and tackle, Three more Lb's, one safety and two Defensive Ends plus depth. This is a 3-5 year plan to compete with the big boys not a one great draft and we are back in business plan. We still need Two offensive Linemen and two Wr's as well. We are going to have to find Coles Replacement in the next two years as well. If you add a Nt and Olb you still have scrubs or guys who should be role players at 5-6 other positions. This is not going to cut it in an afc with Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Peyton Manning in their primes. And Dungy and Beli as their coaches. Lt has not even reached his prime yet! Don't get excited about this article we are in for the long haul.
It's fluff, plain and simple. Anybody who thinks the Jets are going to build momentum as they lose 5 or 6 out of the last 7 is just writing to please the Jets fans reading the capsule.
Blowing up the team and staff like you advocate is even more risky then watching this play out over the next year and a half and trying to get better players in the key positions the Jets are sorely lacking. LOG,ROG,RT,NT,OLB,LDE. That is 6 basically trench positions most of which are going to be easier to fill based on draft position and cap space, with at least one probably not going to be (NT). Also there is a depth problem but I do not know if they can get enough players in to take care of that.
Bradway I usually like your posts and hate Bradway (Terry) But, it's not saying Momentum to WIN THE SUPER BOWL next year.... It's saying Momentum - Beat a few teams you shouldn't get Clemens ready to go - In the offseason add to the Lines maybe make some big changes with Vilma and possibly a new DC...... Next year keep the momentum going maybe go 9-7 and THEN CONTINUE the momentum to the following year.... The momentum has to start some place and to me it started last week. That's not ridiculous.
Well, here are the teams remaining on the schedule that the Jets are extremely unlikely to beat: Pittsburgh, Dallas, New England and Tennessee. There are a couple of teams that they might beat with a little luck in Cleveland and Kansas City (minus Larry Johnson now). There's Miami who they should beat. If you think that going 2-5 down the stretch is going to be building any momentum then I admire your optimism.
That's really short-sighted. The team is being built. I never had any expectations for this year, nor did I for last year. Everyone know they beat crap teams last year. Harris in for Vilma and KC in for CP is a very good start. Manold, D'Brick, and Ferg are solid players added in. Revis is solid, Leon Washington....man it's a pretty damn decent list of players they're grooming. Someone said they'd rather see a crap year with Kellen than a 8-8 with CP, and that is the truth. Penny is done. His day was over when the Raiders exposed his ass. Injury after injury....so now we develop our QB. This is great shit as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to enjoy the rest of the season, win or lose.
