http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3085167 En Espa?ol Source: Girardi expected to accept Yankees' offer ESPN.com news services Updated: October 29, 2007, 12:05 PM ET Comment Email Print The Yankees officially offered their managerial job to Joe Girardi on Monday morning and he is expected to accept it, a source has told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job. Girardi was in Denver for the World Series. A source said he is expected to fly to New York for the announcement, which is likely to come Tuesday. Girardi's contract is expected to be in the three-year, $6 million range. Mattingly will not accept a position on the Yankees coaching staff, Marchand and ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney are reporting. Girardi, a former Yankees player and coach, was voted NL Manager of the Year in 2006 after keeping Florida in contention until late in the season. Girardi, working as a broadcaster Sunday night for Fox Sports from the World Series in Denver, said he had nothing to announce regarding his status as a manager. "Still former," Girardi said. "Nothing extra tonight." Girardi was the first to interview Monday, followed by Mattingly on Tuesday and Pena on Wednesday. Pena won AL Manager of the Year in 2003 after the Kansas City Royals (83-79) posted their first winning season since 1994 -- Hank Steinbrenner told The Times that Pena was "definitely under consideration." Mattingly has no managerial experience. He spent three seasons as New York's hitting coach before he became Joe Torre's bench coach last year. A six-time All-Star, Mattingly is among the most beloved players in Yankees history. Torre declined a one-year offer to return at a reduced salary after leading the team to four World Series championships and 12 playoff appearances in as many seasons. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
Well...I'd like it if Posada, Rivera, and Pettitte stay. I just have a hunch, that had it been Mattingly...Those 3 of would stayed. But if they stay with Giradi, then i'm happy.
Good move and I don't care if anybody stays. Like Steinbrenner said last night if they don't want to be Yankees then fine, let them go. I actually wish they would let Posada and Rivera go. They will end up giving them contracts for a longer period of time then they will be productive and we will have them sitting on the bench like Giambi is now. Sp, they will pay Giardi less for 3 years then Torre turned down for 1 and I bet he doesn't doze off behind his sunglasses on the bench either.
Yeah Don? And who would you like to have catching, closing, and anchoring our young rotation? I'm growing as sick and tired of the Yankees as I am the Jets.
He did a real good job with a shitty Marlins team full of young talent. Lets see how he does with a bunch of 30 year olds, some of whom played with him.
Or get to the playoffs, He really screwed up Josh Johnson, perhaps he can work his magic on the Yanks young guns.
This is a great hiring by the Yankees, the real trouble is if they bring back Posada at his 3 years 43 million and Mo who is going to likely get a 50+ million dollar offer. So much for getting younger and building a team. It's becoming more clear that the Yankee's FO has no clue.
No the Yankees hiring Girardi is a great hire but if they bring back Mo and Posada for all that money it shows they have no clue. I thought that was pretty clear.
This was really the only sensible move for the Yankees, given that, by their own choosing, there was a limited pool of candidates. I thought Girardi's commentary during the World Series was excellent, and he struck me as a pretty intelligent guy. But, here's why I like this hiring most: There isn't any manager in the game today with as much willingness to fight with ownership. And, Hank Steinbrenner has made it fairly well known that his thoughts will be print-worthy withing minutes after he generates them. This has all the makings of Billy Martin vs. George Steinbrenner Part Deux.
are you growing tired of the yankees because of dons hypothetical situation or because they did the smart baseball thing in hiring girardi instead of a retard mush who has never managed before?
Well, if Girardi is going to affect the signings of Mo and Posada, then I have a problem with it, but otherwise, he's far more qualified. (I don't like that Mattingly got snubbed, and I'd hate to see him never come back to the Bronx, but I do want to win, and Girardi has the best chance of making that happen.) My reasons for being upset with the Yankees are many, but not worth me sharing with you. I already know you disagree with any of them anyway, so it would only waste both of our time.
I think it is the right hire for the Yanks, I can't imagine this decision would have any negative impact on the Yanks FA, considering that they each played with him and from what I thought he was well liked in the clubhouse. Joltin Joe Girardio..
This is a great move , with Mattingly i think we would underachieve i dont know he just didnt seem like the right hire to me.With Joe we get a tough manager who could possibly recruit soime of his old players to come play with us, Dontrelle and Miguel. And Hanley when Jeter sadly eventually leaves.
listen swee pea, dont take your frustrations out on me...I dont like your tone:up: ....dude the yankees as an organization cannot pick their next manager because they think a couple free agents would rather play for that guy.....fuck that......by the way as far as arod, theres already talk that that sly old fox scott boras has been talking to other teams about arod since the summertime......which we all know is true......so if he wants to go somewhere else then so be it........The Yankees will survive without that cock
I think Posada is gone. I read a report in a newspaper this weekend, sorry I don't have the link, that Posada is not crazy for Girardi and is wary that Girardi is very critical of his catching ability. Posada could be an excellent fit for the Mets. True, the Mets would have to overpay for him, and his skills will decline, but Posada would be the perfect catcher for the Mets until Tony Pena's son, now 17 in the Met minor league system, is ready for the majors.
fuck posada then. girardi helped him become a catcher....which he still isnt much of......defensively of course
David Wright doesn't need to take another Caribbean vacation. Just look around, David. Reyes, Castillo, Delgago, Alou, Beltran, Gomez, and now Posada.
