Today was one of the low points of my 41 years of watching the Jets.

This team absolutely stinks and everything that is wrong was on full display. While I think a QB change is coming and should come, the reason is that it't time to look to the future. However, let's make a list of why the Jets lost today and let's order the list based on the level of blame:

    1. The Defense - without question, the Jet defense was horrible today and it has been all year (and last year also). The run defense is a joke. Every RB that plays against the Jets looks like Jim Brown. Kenny Watson??? Did he have a gain less than 5 yards??? The D-line was getting knocked 5-10 off the line of scrimmage today. When you take a 23-10 lead early in the 3rd quarter and your defense gives up 3 straight 70+ yard, 7 minute TD drives, its time to stop blaming the offense and the QB. Did anyone really think the defense would stop the Bengals in the second half? The only thing that saved the defense in the first half was the offense controlling the ball and the one Bengal turnover.

    2. Play Calling - Schotty is not getting any HC jobs any time soon. Let us count the errors. The Jets go up top early to Coles and score a TD. The Jets go up top late and score a TD to Cotchery. In the 58 minutes in between, did the Jets even attempt a 20 yard pass???? Is there a note in the Jets playbook that says the middle of the field is off limits???? Then we have first downs. The play call for first down is to hand the ball to Jones. Every time. Without fail. Did the Jets call one pass on first down today?? Did anyone see any play action??? We have one of the best play action QBs in football, but we never see it. Why???? Why after a turnover do the Jets not go for the endzone. After Poteat's pick it was run, run, pass kick. In fact, is there really any question why Pennington was on his ass the entire 4th quarter. Run, Run Pass Kick. The Jets do not have an offense geared to convert 3rd and long and the Jets were in 3rd and long for the entire 2nd half and that is because they are as ridiculously predictable. And lastly, why don't we call 7 or 8 straight 5 yard outs to Coles on the last drive??? Is it really that surprising that the Bengals jumped on that route. The Jets had plenty of time - on the 40 with over a minute left - to use the middle of the field. Stupid Schotty. Is Jericho Cotchery still on the team????

    3. The referees. I don't what Revis said to the referee crew today, but he must have insulted all of their wives, sisters and mothers. The two PI calls were a joke (especially after Coles got pushed 15 yard out of bounds at the end of the game). On Washington's kick off return when the Jets were flagged for a block in the back, a Bengal practically ripped Washington's face mask off, cut no call. The icing on the cake, however, was the joint possession call on Revis' pick. I guess joint possession in the NFL means the ball touched the receiver's hip and if he reaches out and touches the ball when the DB has it in his hands.

    4. The Defensive game play. When will the Jets scrap the 3-4???? How many 150 yard rushing games and 400+ yards against and games with no pass rush do we have to endure???? I miss John Abraham, even if he only played 8 games a year. At least in those 8 games, the QB was forced to pass within 5 seconds.

    5. The Punter. Has Graham gotten off a big kick in big spot yet this year. As good as he was last year, he stinks this year. His shank at 23-17 was a killer. Putting that offense against our putrid defense on a short field meant another TD was inevitable.

The season is over. I can see replacing Pennington because this team is in need of major rebuilding. But the 1-6 start is not Pennington's fault, particularly today. Mangini and Tannenbaum have done a terrible job since the end of last season. The OL and DL needed rebuilding and shoring up and instead we got a LB and a CB. Let's hope there is a 350 NT or a pass rushing edge LB available in the top 5 picks in this year's draft.

I think the Jets need to look somewhere else at punter

Graham is very inconsistent and is not a very good directional punter. This team has a LONG way to go.

What you wrote is all true. Our problems are bigger than just a QB switch. We have the talent to win, but are finding a way lose every week.

I want a front office and coach that believe in the philosophy "the game is won and lost in the trenches." If Mangini and Tannenbaum are not those guys, then maybe it is time to re-evaluate.

We have a bunch of nifty players but no one who can dominate on a consistent basis where it matters most.

All of the things mentioned above are completely right and completely sensible.

We didn't deserve this year; nobody did - yet here we are on the cusp of finding a solution or facing even more humiliation.

I think you can write 7-8 things to cover up for our bad QB at the end of a game like this, or you can just say Bye-Bye Chad.

Seriously I can watch the CowBoys tear up the Pats D and Brady save them, the punter, the kicker, who ever else you wrote in that long ass post by just staying on the field and getting a score. The number 1 or two rated D in the League can get baled out..................But Chad can't get a couple of first downs and maybe a field Goal to Ice the game against the Bengals SORRY ASS D??? A little 4 minute drive to keep the ball out of their hands is TOO MUCH!!!!!!

    GTF OUTTA HERE WITH THIS!!!!

Yessir, it is all true. Not to mention that trend of always running the ball when TJ is 8 yds back from LOS. Piss poor across the board. Sad too that Chad had a decent game with that nice 50 yarder to Coles; a play we can expect once or twice a year but most teams have once or twice a game.

BOttom line. Chad can't win a shootout. I don't care what team you are, you're going to get into a shootout. I define a shootout as a game where both teams have over 30 points. You play Cincinnatti at their stadium, it's not out of the question that they will score over 30, I don't care what team you are. When CIncy began scoring, that's no reason we should stop scoring. I never look at games as come from behind, or any of that. Doesn't matter. I look at points scored over 60 minutes. The other team scoring should not mean anything to your QB. We held them down long enough and had enough of a cushion where you get a TD and a couple of FGs in the second half, not throw another high school pick late, and win the damn game.

Teams with good offenses keep scoring and score somewhere between 30 and 40 points. Bring on Kellen so we can see if after a few games when he gets comfortable that maybe he can do this.

Chad can't. Sad day in Jets land. Chads a warrior and a good guy, but he can't do the job.

Wow, I didn't see this. You are sooooooooo right on. Our O and D lines have been abyssmal this year - in complete regression relative to last year; not that we were world beaters then either.

I actually watched some of the Giants game today - I don't know why because I hate the Giants. I tell you what - there's a team with an Offensive line and Defensive line that plays for 60 minutes and really lays it out all on the field. The Giants D line just seems to get better and better.

We've had like 4 games in a row now where if the offense just took control in the second half and scored two TD's in the first few possessions we win the game. Instead we keep getting 3 and outs and turnovers with the odd FG thrown in and it's just killing us.

The defense is on the field like 20+ minutes of the second half in almost every game. That's partly their fault and partly that Chad is leading the Jets offense into a deep dark hole like clockwork in the second half.

There were so many problems, and it seems it gets deflected to Penny. Its too bad that this season is lost, the Pats are tearing it up, hell even the Bills are doing ok. While we are playing the type of season which is forgettable and after last season its just too painful. Here are the aspects we need to work on in order of importance:

    1. DEFENSE- my god that was horrible, you score 31 points, have a halftime lead, and still can't win.... depressing, our Run D gave up 130 yds and 3 TDs to a no-name RB, he weaved through us like LT today....

    2. O-Line- that whole preseason gaffe with Kendall is coming back to hurt us...

    3. Offensive Playcalling- My god Shotty, we need some more of that magic you had last year... what happened...

    4. QB- Chad, although this wasn't really your fault, you didn't keep our offensive momentum from the last half during the second half, it looked like you were out of steam, its sad to see it end like this after all you have done, but I think its time for a seat...

This was such a painful loss, this season is full of them....

Completely uncalled for - this is very bad Cricket.

  14. The "Trench" issue has 2 main problems...

    1. OL- This regime has drafted 3 talented linemen and signed several young prospects to try and build depth. The current issue at the spot goes back to the prior regime, which shunned the position in multiple drafts...and patched holes w/ veterans who really didnt solve anything(I.E. Tom Nutten, Dave Szott, and Brett Smith). At least this unit is heading in the right direction long term. Mangold and Brick could be future pro bowlers, and Bender looks like the answer at either RT or one of the guard spots. That at least provides a decent corps to work w/.

    2. DL- The biggest problem w/ the team. In 05 this was the team's strength. Abraham and Ellis were a formiddable tandem, D rob was extremely disruptive and Ferguson was very stout. 3 years later and ouch.

Ferguson turned down a decent deal to get a massive deal in Big D, and Tangini decided to part ways w/ Abe in the rebuilding process. Both of those things hurt...but are part of the business.

RIght now the biggest issue was Mangini's decision to switch to a 3-4. Not only did it take away alot of our personell's strength's(Vilma's speed, D rob's gap shooting) but it also limited us in ways to address the DL. There just arent alot of guys in the given FA or draft class that can plug 3-4 DL spots long term.

This is gonna be an ongoing issue for this team..

The defense was not looking too bad at all when they were getting even minimal contribution from the offense. Agreed though – I cant remember watching a worse (I’ll even say worser) team in the last 20 years.

You never know what call was ‘called’ form the tower before noodle arm threw to the check down. This is why KC is wearing the helmet now – so he can hear what is called and see what is done.

I totally agree and I literally want to punch something every time our defense takes the field. Not only are we running the wrong system but we completely lack the talent to stop anyone. We are not successful in any part of our defense. Some defenses are great against the run but so-so against the pass and the reverse, yet our defense is horrible at BOTH. I think it starts with the fact that we get pushed back 3 yards off the line of scrimmage every play and get absolutely no pressure on the QB. Watching Hobson, Ellis, BT, and Robertson rush the passer every play is embarrassing, they all do the same move and cant shed blocks at all.

I see that our defense is full of bitches too. Never once does our defense get fired up or have successful plays back to back, or even hit anyone hard. They look weak and soft and I think that comes from our head coach instilling this "always be professional" attitude and punishing them if they make mistakes. They are so scared to give up the big play that we just let these teams drive 10 yards at a time all the way down the field. Our defense does too much thinking and not enough hitting.

One more thing to remark on..David Barrett is the worst corner in the league hands down. He is slow, a bad tackler, and has the worst change of direction ever. I say we substitute Leon Washington in for him because hes the only player worth keeping other than our stud receivers.

Surely, you must remeber Kotite 3-13 followed by 1-15; it doesn't get any worse than that. I know we are 1-6 and things are bad, but I still think that Mangini has some balls and some clue of what is going on.

Kotite was the most disgraceful coach the Jets ever had by far. He was completely clueless - basically a moron by my assessment.

We are not even close to that yet; but clearly things must change on both sides of the ball and it must start with the coaches making the tough decisions.

This games loss had absolutely nothing to do with Chad. Our piss poor Defense lost this game.

If the QB change is made, I will be fine with it since we need to rebuild. But this game did not do anything at all for the Chad haters here. He was 100% not to blame. Up 23 to 10 in the 3rd. With a defense not made of marshmellows that kind of scoreboard separation in the 3rd quarter usually means a win.

I am fine with seeing what we have in KC. But Chad did enough to win this game today had the defense not played like a bunch of girls. He also hit quite a few recievers and TEs right directly in the bread basket today and the ball wasnt caught. That pissed me off also, along with the play calling and the laughable defensive play.

Hate to disagree with you Joe but we went 5 8 and 1 in Namath's first year with a pretty bad team and it was very watchable. Pennington, even on a good team is a little like watching paint dry. I'm sure a lot of people watched today just in case. A real passing game may not translate into a lot of wins, but it would sure be a lot more fun to watch.
