I have no problem with this pick because I would be excited about having a defensive player up front who has the pedigree that this kid has... Only question I have is...what happens to Coleman and Ellis? Not to say that I wouldn't have Long start ahead of either of them, but those two guys account for alot of money...
Long's best pro position IMO is as a 4-3 end. I've heard alot of rumors he's playing at 260 or so. He even compares himself more to Micheal Strahan and Patrick Kerney, two guys who are better 4-3 ends. I'd rather have Tyson Jackson.
I know college is different from the pros, but I find it hard to believe that Long could thrive as a DE in the 3-4 at UVA if he is only playing at around 260.
Well here is another thing to consider when talking about his weight... Chris Long could be like his Dad in the sense that he is constantly moving on defense... One down he could play OLB... Next he could play DE... Then maybe on running downs play inside lineman... I don't know if he is capable of that, but I know Howie Long was a VERY versatile player...wouldn't be bad to have a guy like that.
I think Groves will regroup and become a top-12 pick with a great combine. As for Long, better to draft a kid with a) good genes and b) a flexibility to play multiple positions along on the defense. Seems like a great pick to me. Guess I'm watching Uva vs. UConn today.
really our first pick has got to be on the DL Dt if possible with DE a secondary priority, with an OG being our job to snag in round 3. I personally think Mcfadden is over rated, not to the point Reggie Bush was, but I just don't think he is going to be the best player from the draft, and when you need to take the BPA he better be great, especially when you have solid guys at the spot. this is why Millen is being booed in Detroit for spending high picks on WR in 3 straight years, and have 2 be terrible. Miami's Ted Ginn hasn't done anything yet, yes it is only his rookie season, but if you are going BPA in the top 10 when there is a guy their your team needs (Brady Quinn) you had better be getting production from him. I just don't think Mcfadden is going to be that amazing guy. Obviously i am capable of being wrong, but that is just my opinion. I like Long as he is a DE however most here think he is a 4-3 guy and not a 3-4 specialist. We will see I guess.
We better not be picking long at that spot its too high , if we cant trade down we should get Groves , our main problem is the pass rush.
Looking at the JETS draft needs and how poorly they are playing this year, it's apparent they will have a TOP 10 pick. Outside from McFadden and Dorsey, the player I want the JETS to draft in the first round is CB Malcolm Jenkins from Ohio State. Pairing Jenkins with an experienced Revis and up and coming safety Kerry Rhodes, will elevate the JETS secondary and for the rest of the draft they can work on the O-Line and D-Line.
I don't know about Campbell. Obviously he is a tremendous player with a ton of upside and could be one of the greatest DE in the game. However, his size might not allow him to play in the 3-4. I just don't see how he could fit. At his height, 280ish is still slender and he needs to be bulky and immovable, not lean and fast. And there is no way he could play LB. If we drafted him, we would have to build our scheme around him, which might not be a bad idea, but our FO clearly wouldn't accept that approach. The problem with this draft is you have a bunch of great QBs, some great RBs and if you don't need those positions you have 4-3 defensive players and DeSean Jackson.
Long will be a top fifteen pick. People regard him in the same breadth as Adam Carriker. Groves could be good as well.
The thing about Campbell is, he is not the prototypical size for a 3-4 OLB, at say around 6-4, 260/265 lbs. being pretty big, but at 6-8, 280 lbs, that should equal out to a similar ratio I would think, 4 more inches, 15/20 more lbs. Also he is fast and strong and is really good at getting to the QB, which is what you look for. If the Jets really think they can convert him to an OLB in this scheme, he would be amazing, because his size would be that of no other 3-4 OLB. But, he is probably just a 4-3 DE, but maybe he could convert, I am not sure. If he could convert - beast.
