The Mets collapse was historically big and embarrassing no doubt, but it is yet to be seen whether it will have the same longterm ramifications that GYC has obviously had. The Yankees playoff hangover is now 3 years old. It's telling that there's activity here not 12 hours after another Yankees playoff flameout. Why care about the Mets now? Insecurity much?
I kinda disagree with how much credit you guys are giving GYC to the hangover. went to the series and lost twice beofre that. Also, got knocked out by the ANgels. The current early exits have NOTHING to do with GYC,rather a lack of personnel. We have a great young core coming up that i am am both excited and confident with, but we also have a bunch of over the hill spoiled brats that have no desire.
Remember those extra games the Yankees played? See, those are called "playoffs". Can you say playoffs?
also,i guess even Met fans expect us to win the WS every year? You talk of a 'gyc hangover" yet we won the division the 2 following years, and made the playoffs this year. We also knocked Boston out of the POs last year with a 5 game sweep and beat them 10-8 this year. Nice try,but the "gyc" was 04 only.
Hey I'm with you (although I'm not sure how proud you can truly be about the four extra games you guys played this year, not to mention whether outperforming the Mets is a worthy measure for judging a Yankee season). The Mets missing the playoffs was an absolute disaster and could easily have long-term ramifications for a franchise that didn't have a playoff pedigree to begin with. We'll have to wait and see. But we already have a body of evidence that suggests that that is already the case with the Yankees. Reasonable minds can disagree, but the fact is the Yankees have not won a playoff series since GYC. Until we see how the Mets respond in the next couple years to what happened this season, the jury is still out on which collapse was more devastating.
I would think that the talent assembled for the money it cost should create world championship expectations for the Yankees, yes. Few people would actually suggest that a couple division titles is something for a franchise of this pedigree to be proud of. Do YOU believe the Yankees have performed up to their abilities the last three years, or underperformed?
oh,totally under performed. But this team is not built the right way(or the way i would like). Sometimes having all of these "great" players is a very bad thing. It creates a spoiled brat mentality. A lazy mentality with no youth fire. I think they are finally seeing this and starting a great youth movement, but the last 3 years, that IMO is the reason, not because of 04.
I don't feel like reading through 287 posts of this Mets Yankees duel crap, and I'm sure someone has made the argument here but here it goes: The Yankees collapse was much greater then the Mets collapse. They both set records, but the Yankees set a playoff record by losing 4 straight after opening 3-0. The Mets was during the regular season. They both lost to bitter rivals, but the Mets only ended a Phillie playoff drought while the Yankees allowed their bitter rivals to go on and win their first and only series since 1918. Talk about ramifications. GYC still beats GMC any day, even though both teams suck balls.
GYC has covered 3 years. GMC covered a few weeks. no matter which way you slice it, hackett's desperation is pathetic.
If it's 3 years later and we're still collapsing, I take your recognition of the Yankees successes of optimal proportions as a compliment.
of course you were on top. 4 world series wins in 5 years. it's not a collapse if the devil rays finish in last place every year. a collapse has two parts to it.
Awesome. At least in our collapse, we collapsed from multiple world championships, while in the gmc, it was a collapse from merely 1st place in the standings. I guess different standards of success.
ummm, the issue is at hand is which was a greater collapse, not which team has won more world series.
And the fact that they have only won 4 playoff games since Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS shows they are still collapsing. If the Mets are a last place team for the next 2 years than I'd say GMC is definately in effect but whether that happens remains to be seen. But I'll give it to you MM, the Mets and their fans don't walk into every season expecting to win a WS, so yeah there are different standards of success. I'd be insane if I thought the Mets would win the WS every year. I'd be insane if I thought they'd do it once every 4 years with the way this team hits peaks and valleys.
