I loved Joe Torre, but I have also always liked Tony La Russa...well, out with one old guinea, and in with the new old guinea.

I don't know if that's what they really need, however. Seems to me a younger, more fiery guy would be what they need right now...

    Fuck no.
If I have to sit through 6 pitching changes in an inning 162 times next year I will implode.

I don't think he has the temperment for the NY press. He would implode. I read Bobby Valentine's name a bunch of places today. I really can't see that but he has been a miracle worker in Japan.

This title is misleading. I thought a deal went down already :eek:hmy:

As far as LaRussa goes, personally, I'm really not in favor of it.

He won the World Series last season, but what did he do with his team this season? They finished 78-84 (.481) and 3rd place in the N.L. Central. Of course, there were injuries, but every team goes through them.

I don't want him period. I don't want Mattingly either but would prefer him 100x over LaRussa. I have come to hate Torre over the past few years but when I keep thinking about it he may still be the best for the job. That may be what Steinbrenner decides too after everybody calms down.

La Russa's schtick would fail miserably in NY.

To me, Tony La Russa is very much a small-town guy. Its not necessarily a bad thing, but i just can't see him doing well in NY. He needs to manage in a city where he can pull his crap without having a hundred different reporters going crazy

According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees have not reached out to La Russa. But, citing unnamed "insiders," the newspaper said La Russa wants the Yankees job and has not committed yet to the Cardinals until New York's situation gets settled.

LaRussa is mr. choker, he got lucky last year w/ that flue WS title but he's had excellent teams do absolutely nothing in october for decades now. he'd never survuve the fans and press here, this would be a monumental disaster.

Agreed that last year's championship was the biggest fluke in the history of professional sports. Hopefully St Louis dumps him and stops being a perennial winner. Thanks to whoever takes him away, cos it's not fun having to face his team every year.

Screw that. Just bring back Joe. Fire Mattingly and bring in Girardi as bench coach and get him ready for the future.

As much as I like Mattingly, and I think he'd make a great coach, he's more suited to teaching, rather than actively coaching. I'd fully agree with you typeO.

As many problems as I have with Torre, I couldn't agree more...

Mattingly, who I like, is a jinx... just not in the cards for him to get the ring... & I know thats what they used to say about Torre...

LaRussa, though having two championships, last years was a fluke, and he should've had more than 1 with Oakland with those line ups & had no business losing to the Dodgers and Reds... and he had a few collapses in the playoffs with the Cards... the worst in 96 after having the Braves down 3-1 at home then getting crushed the next 3 days...

    don't want him

I would certainly hope they didn't fire Long and make Mattingly the batting instructor again. Long did a fantastic job this year, especially with Arod and Posada.

Also, I can't imagine them giving the job to anybody outside the organization because that would mean Mattingly and Guidry would have to go as they would want their own staffs. That would cause as much of an uproar as Torre not coming back.

    Saw and responded

Why is Torre high on your list? If I remember right, you were pretty against him for the most part. I guess he's a better option than Tony and Mattingly (who I don't like either)

To be honest, not having a computer, and access to limitless statistics, I became more of a Torre fan. :rofl2:

However, if he does come back, it's vital that Cashman and the rest of the organization give him rules when it comes to the young pitchers. The second the Joba Rules were removed, we all saw what happened.

Overall, he still handles the media better than anyone, and the players love him. I would not be totally against Torre returning. I'm sure like most, if LaRussa didn't bomb with the media in one beat towns like Oakland and STL, he'd be my top choice. But he'd probably get into a half dozen fights with the NY Post alone by the All-Star Break. As far as Mattingly goes, he's probably my favorite player ever, but he's just way too inexperienced both as a strategist and with the media. Maybe a few years down the road.

Girardi, IMO, has adapted most of the treats that has made Torre great, and is a better strategist. That's why he's my #1 choice.

If Girardi were manager, I have no idea how that would deal with Mariano and Jorge and Derek and Andy. Other than that, yes, he is my #1 choice, but I am concerned about that a lot.

    I like 10P10's list.
