Murdoch sole the team years ago, Bud. The owner is Frank McCourt, the team is family owned again. They even hired a Moneyball guy for a while who proved to be incompetent so they canned him. You're living in the past. If you want to call me a hypocrite, at least get the facts straight. I'm not ignoring the fact that the Dodgers were part of the problem a decade ago, but A-not ever to the extent of the Yankees and B-not for a while now.
That is such a dumb statement. If so many people "hate" the Yankees and want to see them lose, wouldn't that make ratings higher? And after all, it is ALL about the ratings.
How can anyone compete? Unless the Yankees have a 40 man roster set in stone they just walk in and overbid for any FA they want even if it makes no sense(Clemens for $28 mil($18 mil in reality)). No one but the Sox and Yankees would have 3/4 players making 15+ mil a year and still be able to field a team. Sure maybe the Tampa's in the world should spend more, but on what? Anyone with talent is already heading towards BOS/NYY/CHC/ANA/NYM/LAD and that's it unless a team just lost a huge FA and they have some extra cash.
Who'd say they want to watch them lose? I want them to lose but I'm not watching them unless they bump the Sox game.
Different times for the games once again. This is posted on the Yankee site. A 10 PM start? These can't be right but here they are anyway. With the way Yankee games go the Sunday and Monday games could go until 3 AM. http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news...t_id=2239618&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy Thu., Oct. 4 3 p.m. Jacobs Field TBS Fri., Oct. 5 3 p.m. Jacobs Field TBS Sun. Oct. 7 9:30 p.m. Yankee Stadium TBS *Mon. Oct. 8 10 p.m. Yankee Stadium TBS *Wed. Oct. 10 6:30 p.m. Jacobs Field TBS
If BOS/NYY/CHC/ANA/NYM/LAD all have the capabilites to sign anyone that they want, then how is it solely the Yankees fault? Yes, they do have the highest payroll but those other teams arent that far behind. Its not just spending money on any player but on players that will help you. Look at the way Balt and Toronto went. They went ahead and spent money and still stink because they made bad choices. Just like any other business, you have to put in money to make money. There are plenty of good teams that are a few players away but wouldnt pay the salary to get there. Detroit turned themselves around because they acquired players like Irod, Ordonez, Casey, and Rogers and it paid off with a AL championship and a world series trip. I'm sure they turned a profit last year. This year they were close but with some injuries they fell a bit short. Its still a far cry from a few years ago when they were a horrible team. Same thing with the White Sox, they acquired El Duque and Contreras and won the WS. This year they gave exorbitant contracts to aging players and it backfired but they are still a talented team and should rebound next year. And if you buy a baseball team and dont care about winning then dont blame the Yankees.
They are in the #1 TV market. And by "seeing them lose", I mean not necessarily watching the game, but seeing the score or highlights and seeing that they lost. I was at a business event with people from all over the country last year during the LDS (leaving for the same thing Thursday), and people were fired up to see the end of Saturday's game when Detroit was about to knock them out. That was about the extent of the interest, "The Yankees are about to go out? Put it on."
2004... But let's be a little more open minded... 1996 17.4 1997 16.8 1998 14.1 1999 16.0 2000 12.4 2001 15.7 http://www.baseball-almanac.com/ws/wstv.shtml
I wouldnt be suprised if it was the 04 WS just because Boston was in it. If I recall correctly, the 00 WS The subway series was a ratings disaster outside of NY.
True, when the Pats first won the SB most were happy. The underdog won. At this point most would tune into the SB with the Pats and hope they lose.
You're welcome... and we threw his ass out of here the first chance we got... And they won just as many championships then and they do now... ZERO It's relevant because you had two of the most dominating players for their positions and gave them away... then you have the nerve to complain about the Yankees... LA has had comparable superstars to the Yankees... just because they don't know how to run their team doesn't make it the Yankees fault And if he ever makes it back to the playoffs we'll see how good he is
After he fucked up a couple playoffs for you. That's the other hidden problem, the Yankees can eat a mistake like that and still go out and get Bobby Abreu for the stretch run just in case they need him. Any other team is stuck with a $15 million albatross that keeps them from getting anyone else for the duration of the contract. Again we're going back to the early/mid 90s when the Yankees payroll was not $200 million. We did get Sheffield for Piazza, so we didn't actually give him away, though I still hated the trade. And to be clear, I'm not including the Dodgers as one of the teams that can't compete. Luckily for me they are one that can--#2 TV market, 4 million fans a year, we're one of the lucky few. And even there our payroll is about half of yours. But I'm speaking about baseball as a whole, the other 25 teams you haven't seen in October since about 1989 and the fans in those markets who can barely stomach baseball anymore and hate the Yankees. Got there last year with a team that wasn't very good. Now we have some of the best young players in the game, homegrown, breaking into the lineup. We'll see.
We played the stupid Marlins. You played the Cardinals. Cardinals have 10 times the fan base of Florida. But that aside, I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox drew higher ratings, all else being equal.
Good article on A-rod. Does bring up the question of whether he will leave or not. I read somewhere else today (oh, on the Yankee page) that when Torre batted him eighth last year it was the most humiliating thing that has ever happened in his baseball career. You just have to wonder if he isn't long gone..especially if Torre is still here. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=arod2007
I just finished up reading that. It's a pretty good piece. He's a retard if he leaves. He deserves a lot of credit for not faltering after that thing in Toronto.
