New England Patriots 5 Super Bowls, 3 Championships Miami Dolphins 5 Super Bowls, 2 Championships Baltimore/Indy Colts 3 Super Bowls, 2 Championships Buffalo Bills 4 Super Bowls NY Giants 3 Super Bowls 2 Championship Just take a look at what our division opponents and stadium roommates have hauled since we last were in the Super Bowl. All of these teams have had their share of bad GMs, bad coaches, and bad draft picks. You say the Jets have just had bad luck? Please! The Dolphins had their top draft picks drop dead between April and training camp two years in a row. There's something's wrong here, very wrong, and I believe it ultimately it comes down to ownership. You need an owner that smart, ambitious, wealthy beyond belief, and a little bit ruthless. We haven't had one of those since Sonny Werblin and that's why we haven't been back to the big game. We won't be until we do either.
5 years ago I would have argued this post... But now...Im so sick of the mediocrity, the letdowns and the suffering.. Something needs to change. True, dedicated level headed Jets fans DESERVE to see a championship!
I would settle just to get back to the game. I don't see it happening for years again. Of course teams always get lucky, catch a break here and there, stay healthy all year (Oh wait..we did that last year) and manage to get there even if they lose it. Just not the Jets.
I'm just as frustrated and ready to not watch another game this year, but I disagree with this point. You're placing too much emphasis on the owner. Does the Green Bay Packer ownership have "wealth beyond belief"? NO! But they had Ron Wolfe who saw the wisdom in bringing in Brett Favre. Does Tampa Bay's ownership have more wealth/smarts than the Jets? If Bill Parcells, under such restrictive ownership constrains as you suggest, could take the Jets from 1-15 to 12-4 and within a half of football to the Super Bowl, than it's possible, even for our lowly Jets to get over the hump. It's all about football operations my friend, not wealthy ownership (see Daniel Synder).
Nice post George. This is true Jets fans realising the season is slipping out of reach already. I agree with everything you say but for crying out loud are we to be jinxed for ever,I've often thought Joe's guarantee was a hex over us but .......... curse of the Bambino, forget it! Curse of being a Jets fan!
Hey KTJF – doesn’t it suck when you turn that corner? It defiantly takes allot of the enjoyment out of football. And I’ll bet this damn team is more detrimental to our health than smoking… Just let it be known – the day I die; I could have had another 10 good years at least if I was born in New England!
I have been a Jets fan for almost 30 something years. Lived in Jersey, now in Florida. My wife got me 2 tickets this year to go up north to see the Jets play the Steelers. Man, a month ago I couldn't wait, but now I wish I could sell them. The only thing that could make it better if they put KC in and start benching players that don't want to play:drunk: .
Jet Fighter, you're cherry picking my requirements, money is only 1/4 of the equation. Intelligence and ambition (ruthless helps) are part of the package. Ya gotta want it!
We have a young and what seems a bright HC and GM. We just had a 7/8 year run of playoffs and the team didn't make it to the dance. The team needs to rebuild and the young GM and HC have to learn, adjust and get better. The last 40 years means nothing. There is no other option.
Actually, Parcells wasn't under this ownership. He worked for Hess and when Hess died and Johnson bought the team he got out of town as fast as he could.
Unfortunately it was either Woody or the Dolans... ..Any chance Mark Cuban wants to purchase a long suffering NFL franchise?
For sure you need a fan of the game to be an owner. Kraft is, Jones is...not somebody just trying to make a buck. I doubt Johnson knows anything at all about football.
Truth be told, Kraft was considered a sketchy horrible owner before Bellichick came along and started winning SB's. He could possibly be the most overrated owner in sports
