What is the biggest mistake so far by the front office for this season? All of them are huge mistakes, but which one do you think is hurting this team the most? Options: 1. Utilizing 4-3 talent in a 3-4 scheme. 2. Trading all our picks to get Revis and Harris 3. Ignoring D-Line needs via draft and free agency 4. Ignoring O-Line needs via draft and free agency 5. Conservative offensive playcalling 6. Conservative defensive playcalling 7. Other
Where's the what would have been an unpopular option but 20/20 hindsight tells us better "Trading Pete Kendall" option?
Personally I think the trades up to get Reavis and Harris will end up a big positive. I still have worried about the Dline - and the scheme for a while now. No run stopping NT is an issue that has haunted us. We all knew the Oline issues, and with the never ending saga of Pete Kendall tying a weight around our team's neck...they blew that one.
I'm going to vote utilizing 4-3 in a 3-4, with conservative offensive playcalling being a close runner up. I can't say that conservative defensive playcalling has been a major problem, I think defensively the problem is scheme and execution. The Jets have taken chances on D and they very rarely are effective. There are too many problems with this team to single out any one in particular. With that being said, I can't kill the FO for the draft... Revis and Harris both are going to be very good players for years to come. I agree that trading up for two guys was risky, but considering the way they look and the amount they are bound to grow, I would say it will probably turn out good for us.
Ignoring the D-line. No no ability to stop the run or put pressure on the QB basically means no defense. Can't win without a defense.
The first one and the last two aren't front office desicions but C/S decisions... I think you're confusing the two
I voted other because frankly the offseason was a total clusterf*ck of bad decision making. Any of the potential mistakes listed above would have hurt the Jets going into this season but making all of them is what turned this team into a joke. There are other things that they did that looked good on the surface but terrible when you consider the context in which they were made. Why did the Jets trade for a 28 year old runningback when they were going to let the offensive line, which was weak last year, deteriorate further? Why did they focus so heavily on cheap longshot free agents to promote camp competition when they weren't going to have enough talent in camp to have the shakeout be worth anything? I just see this last offseason as like a textbook example of what not to do if you are an undersized rebuilding team with depth and talent problems.
how much cap space did the leadership have last january up until now? how much could the front office save if we did get rid of say vilma, robertson pennington, and any others who are drawing big pay, with limited production? this is only a hypothetical question
Well, I can't choose the first one because it's an option for people living in a fantasy world. The FO/CS has committed to the 3-4 coaching-wise and personnel-wise since day 1 and it would be the dumbest thing in the world to do a philosophy conversion back to a different scheme that few of our current defensive coaches are really suited for. Aside from Vilma and Robertson, I can't really identify too many strictly 4-3 guys. You might be able to blame Erik Coleman's suckiness on the scheme change, but he was sucking before Mangini got to town. While I really hate the current result of the 3-4 conversion, I'm not sure I hate the steady approach as much as flip-flopping schemes like we did under Herm, only after cockamamie experiments like moving a 1st round DE to DT for one offseason. Our coaching is suspect, from the ground up. That I can't disagree with. While I like both Revis and Harris, trading up twice on day 1 was something it still looks like we couldn't afford with the condition of our lines. This mistake is right up there with ignoring the O-line situation while getting into a contract dispute with Kendall. That whole situation reeks of amateurish behavior.
i have to agree with don. it's not so much one thing as it is many. fa is not being used to the benefit of this team. there have been no 3-4 nose tackles worthy of consideration thru the draft or free agency. o-line needs help. letting kendall go was a mistake, especially over 1 million. fa olineman are gonna cost a bundle in fa now. kendall for another million would have been a bargain!!! we need a qb that can utililize the whole field.... if we wait for the cs to do all this thru the draft, i'll be retired and in the looney bin by that time.
