True. I just don't have any confidence in them at all right now. I'm not sure how pleasant watching a sweep loss would be, but I GUESS it's better than no playoffs at all. If they miss the playoffs Willie is almost surely gone, which would be a positive.
the padres would be awarded the wild card and the mets and phils would play a 1 game playoff for the division. it's a really stupid rule.
3/4 isn't a gimme for the Phils, going against Smoltz tomorrow and the dreaded Nationals. I mean, they're not that good. No one is in the NL (except maybe the Diamondbacks), which is why making the playoffs is more appealing than missing it. It's wide open. I think 2/4 and 2/4 for the Mets and Phils is likely.
the d-backs have a freaking negative run differential. they've also lost 3 in a row including 2 to the pirates.
I might put on the Rockies game soon. Jennifer Garner is on the Letterdude show. Maybe I should look at her first.
Also, there would not in fact be a one game playoff UNLESS the Padres and/or the Rockies were also tied with the Mets and Phillies. The tiebreaker only comes in when one of the teams would not make the playoffs. If it's just the Mets/Phils that end up the season tied the Phils would win the division based on H2H record and the Mets would be the WC.
Yup. There is precedent for this. In 2005, the Yankees and Red Sox actually finished with the same record at the end of the season, but since both teams had better records than the next best team in the Wild Card, the Yankees won the division due to head-to-head.
Coolstandings.com says we have the best chance (93.7%) of making the playoffs in the NL. In a related story, Coolstandings.com is completely ridiculous.
No, there would also be a playoff game in the scenario I originally said, which is that the wild card team has a better record than both the Mets and Phils. That seemed ridiculously unlikely when Bradley went down, but tonight will make two wins in a row for the Padres since then (they're up 10-2 in the 7th). It will really be funny if the NL wins the World Series again this year, since it is obvious that all four AL playoff teams are better than any of the NL teams.
That was the sentiment last year too...Everyone thought the Mets were the only team that could even put up a fight in the World Series (they would've been underdogs though). This year, I'd say there isn't even that.
At least last year the Mets would have been worthy league champions - this year every team in the NL sucks bigtime.
Ok, I misread your post. I think the Padres still have a pretty tall order though, they're on the road against a team fighting for a playoff spot and really only have the pitching advantage in 1 of the 4 games.
True, but the '06 Cardinals would be in the same boat this year. I'm going to bed, but if I had to guess, I'd say the playoffs go down as D'backs, Cubs, Mets, Phillies. While I'm here, I'd say we take the Cubs (that could be my fatigue talking, but the Cubs don't impress me), the Phillies take the D'backs, and the Phils go the World Series. That looks ridiculous, but for some reason, I still think it's a solid prediction.
I really wish people would stop invoking the Cards when desperately trying to pump up the chances of their own team. Anything is possible, but it's a lot more likely that if the Mets make it they'll be crushed in the first round, given the total collapse that has occurred in the pitching staff lately, and the almost-four-month-long pattern of them being a .500 team. As Damon Runyon once said, "The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that's the way to bet."
I think its most likely that the Mets will dump 3 of the next four, and be lucky to not be on the beach. when is someone going to ask Willie, if he'd like to have back that handful (3 or 4) of games where he blew leads agains the heart of the opponents order in the 8th, because he only likes to bring Wagner in for the Ninth. And JOE SMITH???????????? JOE SMITH...With 2 men on?????? AYFKM! Let Omar coach out the season. Dump WIllie today.
this team makes me sick.... I've gained a new appreciation for the Yankees after this season and may even start rooting for them!! ok, blasphemy i know, but this is how bad it's gotten
The NL is very weak, you could make the argument that all of the NL teams is just about .500 worthy anyway, however I will say this means nothing if we can't get out of this swoon as soon as possible.
