No, I was a WR/TE, played only on a few special teams. I remember the 5-2 because the standing ends were lined up across from me as a TE on scout O. We were D-III back then, everyone mostly ran the ball, thus the 5-2 as you mentioned. The middle of our field was a big mud hole, you had to line up wide if you wanted nice grass to take off on from scrimmage.
That's good you got on the field a lot at least. High school ball here was actually better players than what we had at Marist becuase the good HS kids went D-1, where at college we were all walk-on D-III.
The problem is that conventional thinking has changed. On most of the top lines today, the guards actually outweigh the tackles. I agree, something has to be changed. With a mixed personnel, I don't see why you don't run a mixed D. With so much defensive stagnation, I don't see why you don't try mixing in some new looks.
Yeah, we moved out to California when I was in high school, and it was a huge shift. We had several future D-I players, including a Heisman winner. Most of that talent was concentrated on offense, although we had some great defensive playmakers, especially at LB and DL.
Agreed. That convention has changed as the size of the OGs has increased. As for mixing it up, and losing the vanilla, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN 'BOUT WILLIS.
There is no way Vilma could play OLB in a 3-4. Maybe in pass specific situations they could rush him out from out there. If he had to take on a 330 pound tackle on passing plays that would be comical. The idea of the 3-4 is that the 3 down lineman take up 4 or 5 blockers creating space for 4 linebackers to fill gaps, blitz, etc...
Right, but at this point, that's not happening. Vilma had one play in which he was able to blitz (nearly) untouched. At this point, he's taking on guards straight on who now outweigh the tackles. He has a better chance of using his speed on the outside. In an ideal situation, he'd be playing inside with a better line in front of him, but that's not the case at this time.
hows about a 4-4? hobson-harris-vilma-barton thomas-coleman-robertson-ellis revis and dyson at corner and Rhodes at Rover. we certainly would beef up our run defense. i would at least like to see it sprinkled in. i think it would confuse some offensive players. whatever were in for a long season lol.
Screw the 52. Let's play the 60, or better yet, 83 defense. We'll have the best run defense in the league! 3-4 OLBs are generally 255 to 270. If Vilma is considered undersized for 3-4 ILB, which is 235-250 generally, how is he to play at OLB? The only move you could make is Vilma to Safety, which he wouldn't be fast enough for.
is part of it that the cs doesnt really understand or know how to play and call a 4-3? if they were to go back to a 4-3 and some of the talented players played well wouldnt they bring more in the off season? rather than playing poorly and bringing nothing? its all about return on investment. if they decide that vilma and robertson dont fit i would think they would want to put them in a position so they could command something for them. i really dont have confidence that robertson will ever be a big presence in any defense so he is a wash. im fairly confident that vilma will succeed in a 4-3 much more than this defense at this point. how could the parts fit this year if they scrapped it all and went strictly 4-3? would it even be possible? the defenses are quite different.
He's barely undersized for ILB, and could do well if he had an actual 3-4 line in front of him. However, we don't have the right personnel up front, which is what primarily makes him underused at ILB. I agree he's undersized for a traditional OLB in the 3-4, but he may actually do better there with this current personnel. Again, as things shift on the typical OL, the position demands in the 3-4 may change.
Thats not true in his first year under Herm we were in a 4-3 scheam and he showed out and was able to show his potential!
denver plays a 4-3. its ok to be 220 when your a OLB in a 4-3. especially when youve got the instincts and "play above your weight" which gold does cuz the guy hits harder than youd expect.
Are you serious? Ellis had a couple really good seasons in the 4-3, albeit on and off, but much better than he's done in the 3-4.... Thomas never really got a chance to prove what he can do until we moved to the 3-4 last season.... He was drafted as a 4-3 DE, so who knows whether or not he can perform in the 4-3? Robertson was developing into one of the best young DTs in football when we were in the 4-3.... In fact, in '04 several coaches said he was the BEST DT they faced the entire season..... Barton played very well in the 4-3, and is now only serviceable... And I don't even think I need to mention Vilma... Defensive rookie of the year in the 4-3... Pro Bowl in the 4-3.... Led the league in tackles in the 4-3.... The only guys I can think of who are better suited for the 3-4 are Hobson and Harris....
Brilliant duh! Its fine to give up 400 yards a game , but we have to be putting the points up the other end Schobel has Bricks number
Last year when the Pats caught us off guard and ran the 4-3 to perfection. Our offense died that day. So, if the coach is willing and flexible I think it can happen. I mean, can we at least get different looks? disguise it somehow? Something has to happen.
Good read, Thanks. It sounds like he doesnt liee Bryan Thomas at all. im surprised he didnt start mentioning the mcdonalds addiction he had a few years back.:breakdance:
