Here is a great quote from Peter Kings column on CNN.com. I give D'Brick plenty of credit for this quote: "I didn't get to the quarterback. I suck right now. So there. There's your headline.'' -- Miami defensive end Jason Taylor following the Dolphins' loss to the Jets. :finssuck:
Taylor was a good matchup for D-Brick, unlike bigger more powerful DE's, Brick could use finess and his long arms to hold him off in pass blocking.....
Go look up Aaron Schobel. It's not size that gets to D'Brick it's anybody with a motor who knows how to get leverage and use it. I see D'Brick's success against Taylor yesterday as a good omen because Taylor's exactly the kind of defensive end that spun D'Brick like a top last season.
Hopefully, he builds on this game and starts a mean streak that gets the whole O-Line gelling. Hopefully!!!
He did? I remember seeing Brick do pretty well against Taylor and Freeney last season, but the power rushers giving him trouble. I expect that he will not do as well in Buffalo next week, but if he can have a repeat performance I will feel very good about his development.
Not true. Brick held up well against Taylor and other speed rushers. It's the stronger DEs with a good bull rush that he struggled against. Schobel ran through him, not around him.
It was kind of a combo of both.. Brick got himself in trouble last year against speed rushers when he tried to rely too much on his long arms, wasnt aggressive enough and didnt shuffle his feet properly. That is when Speed rushers got leverage on him and got around the outside corner. Brick also struggled w/ bigger, stronger De's who had powerful bull rush moves. He didnt fully understand how to defend those type of moves and truthfully didnt have the upper body strength. Thus far this year, he has been worlds better w/ both. He's using proper technique w/ his footwork, been alot more aggressive and has used arm extension to completely subdue speed rushers. He has gotten alot stronger and has learned a good hand punch to go along w/ his long arms to eliminate alot of his bull rush/inside move type struggles. He's REALLY come a long way.
What I love most about D'Brick is still the fact that he remains calm and composed. He really strikes me as a player you build an offense around simply because he is a scholar of the game and handles imself with class. Technically, his footwork is great and it seems like he's taken his level of aggresiveness to another level. I mean, Jason Taylor is a great player, and to have done such a great job, you know that D'Brick pulled some all nighters studying film and gave it 110%. I'm proud and want to see more of these threads as the season progreses. Keep it up Brick.
Maybe he was extra motivated by the fact that his play may have been slightly responsible for Chad's original ankle inury. He didn't want a repeat.
He still has a way to go. I'm worried about how he's going to do these next two weeks. Schobel kicked his ass last year, and Osi Umenyiora has schooled some of the best LTs in the league. I'll feel a lot better about Brick when/if he shuts those guys down.
Here are some other barometers one of brick's best games as a jet: Jason Taylor was penalized twice during the game for offsides, one which he literally crossed the neutral zone a full second before the snap. 110 yards rushing for thomas jones. But picking on d'brick is unfair at times. We all know that the offensive line needs to play well as a unit with good support from the RB's and TE's. We have a young line, which was tossed into the fire against two talented defenses week 1 and 2. In the preseason, they were getting dominated by marginal defenses, like the giants. Next week will be a test to how this unit has progressed... all things considered we put up 3 TD's (and could have easily had 4) yesterday against a marginal defense w/o one of their best playmakers... if only there was a glimmer of light on the defensive side... sighhh
This notion that Schobel is somehow a huge obstacle for Dbrick is weird. We all know Brick sucked at the end of the season. However in the first game Schobel was a none event. I remember a few quotes by him at the end of last year when a reporter basically said," How do you feel about the rookie Ferguson as he basically owned you in the first matchup." Well Schobel basically said, " he is not that good and I am going to get him back this Sunday" not an exact quote but that was the gist. School him he did in the second game. So they are 1-1 as far as winning matchups. We shall see this Sunday. It is the second matchup later in the season that will be a bigger test because I want to see if Brick will wear down like he did last year.
he wasnt bad...exactly. but for a guy taken 4th overall he hasnt really done much. one bright spot is hes played better than robert gallery...so he has that going for him... seriously though, yesterday was bricks first all around solid game. from ciminis "jet stream"... Offensive Line: B+ On the second play, DT Vonnie Holliday came clean on a stunt and body-slammed Pennington on an incompletion. A miscommunication resulted in the breakdown. After that poor start, the line rallied and finished on a high note. The Jets allowed only one sack (LG Adrien Clarke was the guilty party) and the line did a nice job in the running game. It was easy to figure out the Jets' game plan: They ran to the right on almost every play, away from Taylor and directly at DE Matt Roth. RG Brandon Moore and RT Anthony Clement controlled the point of attack, allowing that strategy to work. Ferguson received a lot of credit for neutralizing Taylor (no sacks, four tackles), but Brick had a lot of help. Taylor was in the game for 23 pass plays. Here's how the Jets stopped him: 10 plays - Isolated on Ferguson, one on one. 5 plays - Ferguson gets help from Chris Baker or Leon Washington, each of whom "chip" Taylor. 3 plays - Taylor lines up over Ferguson, but stunts to the inside and is picked up by an interior lineman. 2 plays - Taylor drops into coverage. 1 play - Taylor lines up over RT Anthony Clement. 1 play - Pennington spikes the ball on a clock play. 1 play - Taylor is blocked by Clarke. Overall, a pretty good day by Ferguson. He needed it.
Schobel is 6'4" and 243 lbs. If he could bullrush through D'Brick at 60 lbs heavier then we have a problem. What he did was to get a strong first step and then spin him. That's the same thing Jason Taylor did last year as he recorded two sacks off of D'Brick.
