I'm pretty sure that Wayne Chrebet was a long-time serviceable player who had one really good season, and the Jets standards for retiring numbers are very high. Everyone loved Chrebet, and his story is great, but he wasn't Jerry Rice. -X-
If they are going to start retiring numbers for above average players, Chrebet needs to get in line behind Wesley Walker and Al Toon. The only number on the horizon for retirement is 28.

They have retired 12 (Joe Namath), 13 (Don Maynard) and 73 (Joe Klecko). Generally you have to get into the Hall of Fame, but they waived that for Klecko because he deserves to be there. I thought that was the right thing to do, instead of waiting for what may never happen. I loved Chrebet, wore my #80 yesterday, but they shouldn't retire it. They didn't retire Wesley Walker's 85 or Al Toon's 88. Curtis Martin will get to the Hall of Fame and the Jets will retire #28.
I am a huge Chrebet Fan, but I do not think his number should be retired. I can not argue with his stats and the most important thing his HEART, but there were times that he was not even the best receiver on The JETS. I an also on the fence about Curtis, but I am leaning in favor of Retiring it, probably the same year he gets in the Hall.
Although the #90 worn by Dennis Byrd has not been officially retired, it has not been issued since he suffered his career-ending injury in 1992. I think they should retire that number as well.
If we lower the bar to retire mediocre players then Wesley Walker, Freeman Mcneil, Al Toon and Lance Mehl should all have their numbers retired ahead of Chrebet.
I wouldn't call McNeil, Walker or Toon mediocre. I don't think they should have their numbers retired but they were very good players, not mediocre. Toon was possibly the best athlete to ever wear the uniform, it's a shame his career got cut short by head injuries.
