Well, according to the experts, Clemens was the most talented of the QB class of '06. He got hurt and missed a lot of time in his last year, which dropped his value significantly. We basically stole him. Now will he be great in the NFL? Who knows? I'm not Chad's biggest fan, but I think he deserves the opportunity to lose the job. I am hopeful that Clemens is as good advertised though, and he beats out Chad for the starting job. That's not darksiding Chad, it simply means we have drafted a better QB than we already had.
I guess i'm just a Chad homer. I just want to see the guy do well and i really believe if he's healthy and we get another RB like Curt in his prime,he will.
The market for Chad, assuming the Jets want to look for one, is in Kansas City. Herm Edwards would cobble together Chad, Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez in a minute and he'd spend a 1st round pick to do it. Personally I think trading Chad would be a gutsy move and it's not one I'd have the guts to do this offseason.
History tells me Kellen Clemens will take over as the Jets starting quarterback at some point in the 2007 season. In the salary cap era, only four quarterbacks drafted in the 1st or 2nd round sat their first two years: Chad Pennington Marques Tuiasosopo Philip Rivers Aaron Rodgers The Raiders drafted Tuiasosopo when they had an All-Pro at the position. Mindless. Rivers sat for two years behind a Pro Bowl performer in Drew Brees. Rivers was drafted at a time when Brees had not yet developed into a top level quarterback. Rivers held out in camp and did not give himself a fair chance to win the job. Brees kept the job and ran with it for two years. Rodgers was drafted because the Packers thought Brett Favre was going to retire after the 2005 season. Favre came back for 2006 and that particular legendary player is not going to be benched. The only one of those four guys who should have played but did not play was Pennington. Testaverde's mediocre-at-best performance in 2001 cost the Jets the AFC Eastern Division title. Herman Edwards' idiocy and lack of vision kept Pennington on the bench. The crap continued into 2002. The Jets began the season 1-3, in part due to poor play at the quarterback position. Pennington took over after Testaverde got hurt in Jacksonville. Pennington got the start the following week. The Jets soon blasted off. Not a surprise. __ Clemens is going to have to out-and-out suck to not replace Pennington at some point in the 2007 season. Pennington is not an All-Pro like Rich Gannon was. He's not a legend like Favre. What he is is a mediocre quarterback who will be replaced sooner than you think. If Clemens is good, the Jets cannot afford to not play him. Not in this era of the salary cap. It's bad business. If Clemens does not play in 2007 it is because he either: sucks (and we'll then call him the white Tuiasosopo) or gets injured ___ If this board does not crash again, this particular thread is going to get bumped next September, October, November, or December. Who will do the bumping? That's the question.
I'll bump it after Chad leads the Jets to a Super Bowl XLII title. Or when Chad is actually traded to the Vikings. hmy:
I didnt read any of the responses, but I would think that the Viking would want to see more than 1 full game out of Tavaris Jackson be fore making any big moves at the QB position. It doesnt really make any sense from the Jets perspective in my opinion either
Chad will be eventually replaced, but the time table is non-existent. Until CP starts being extremely inconsistent, and is no longer a winner, I just cant see him being sidelined/traded. CP is a great leader, and a very good image for this team. Like it or not. I really think CP represents everything that Mangini wants from "HIS" players, and he is Mangini's role model for this team. Just cant see it happening. Just cant..
Okay, I wrote that this thread would get bumped. It got bumped real fast. Obviously, Clemens is going to start based upon an injury to Pennington as opposed to sloppy play by Pennington. But, like Favre in 1992, Brady in 2001, and Pennington in 2002 (to use just three relatively recent examples), maybe Clemens will remain the starter for quite some time.
I think it's going to be a dogfight and a QB controversy all season long at this point. Barring a great game by Clemens on Sunday, and I doubt his ability to do that in his first start, Chad will be doing absolutely everything he can to get back by the Dolphins game. Why? Because if he lets Clemens get a win or two under his belt in the next 4 weeks he'll likely never get the job back. Clemens has not impressed me so far as the kind of guy who is going to step right in and go gangbusters. I think he's got a real shot at being the Jets QB but he needs a few games to get his feet wet. And he's got a lousy offensive line to do it with. So my expectation is a loss to the Ravens this week and a very conflicted Eric Mangini who cannot afford to lose to the Dolpins in the Meadowlands the following week but is also aware that putting a hobbled Chad back in is self-defeating, both in terms of chances to win and long-term. Herm would put Chad back in in a country minute. Hell, he'd let him start against the Ravens. I'm hoping Mangini has enough horse sense to not cut off his future prematurely by putting an injured vet back in against an aggressive defense (Miami.)
Chad Pennington is going no where. Chad will be back as the starting QB unless Clemens wins and puts up pro bowl numbers.
The only place there will be a "QB Controversy" is among fans that are entrenched with the idea of getting rid of Pennington, or among the media. Clemens just may end up getting some experience, which is great, but in the end I doubt he beats out a healthy Pennington for the starting spot even during this year.
