Based on yesterday's performance by other teams, I think the Jets can still win 7-9 games if everything stays as-is. Sure, we will get better and so will the other teams, but yesterday we could have been in there with a lot of the other teams on our schedule.

Every team's strategy for the rest of the season will be pass to Barrett's side and run up the middle, so it can go either way in most of the games.

Anyways, I think we can still beat Buffalo once and maybe twice, and the same goes for Miami. Add a win against Cleveland and a possible win against Philly as well as a chance to beat the Giants based on their weak pass D and we could have a 8-8 season.

    Let's hope so.

The biggest frustration is that we did not narrow the witht he Pats at all. Really, no aspect of our game has imrpoved. It could have been Cedric Benson and Leon back there yesterday and the result would have been the same.

Next week is a sure loss, as is the Cincy game, the Steelers game, and the next NE game. However, if we go with this 3-4 all season, we could end up with the same number of wins as we have down linemen. I, for one, have hated it from the get-go.

If we get smart and do what works, regardless of what the coaches want to make work, then the team will get better in a couple of aspects and we can be better, but this has to start next week, not once we're 0-4.

We need a giant NT in the middle. We need O-line help. The only thing is, it won't happen this year. If we give away one draft pick for some hasbeen floating around, hoping we find lightning in the bottle, I will lose a lot of respect for this coaching staff.

Some observations from a Pats fan, regarding the jets fans....

The Jets this year have the same talent, or more, as they did last year.

The coaching staff is the same, with one more year to implement their system.

Yesterday, I watched this board go from pregame enthusiasm and Pats trashing, to dismay, to suicide watch, to eating your own young. You turned like jackals on Pennington and Mangini and bemoaned the lack of talent on the Jets.

I've got news for you....Mangini did a HELL of a job last year, and the Jets made the playoffs by maximizing what they had for talent, which was average to good.

Pennington is a smart QB...if you had a QB that aired it out, you'd give up more turnovers and get crushed.

This year, you have a tougher schedule, and you are not going to sneak up on teams and surprise them, they are prepared. Deal with it. Your team is not as good as you thought it was last year, and not as bad as you think it is now. This bashing of Mangini and Pennington is pitiful.

Calm down its only one week. The roster has holes but 2 years ago you thought we would find a good RB, OT,OG, C, DE, DT, OLB, ILB, CB and FS? Were not going 3-13 we just got smoked by the best team in football The 4-3 wouldnt work any better then the 3-4 at this point so I dont know what the point would be to switch. How do we have no shot vs cincy or the steelers? B/C they looked impressive vs the browns?

I think we need to forget the NT and play Pouha and D-Rob in the middle together with Ellis and Coleman on the outside. Then, when we need more DBs, put D-Rob in there for a 3-4. The starting LBs should be Thomas, Vilma, and Hobson. The 3rd corner should be Poteat.

Someone yesterday said that you cannot design a defense around players. Well, that's not entirely true. Watch the team we play next week. For years they have been setting up the D to allow Lewis to make plays, and have added a supporting cast around him that has also become pretty damn good. Jon Vilma is the biggest playmaker on defense, so why are we making him ordinary?

The Jets need to play a 4-3, it works better and is our best shot at winning.

Because the Steelers can run up the middle and we cannot stop them. Cincy has weapons that will burn us on the ground and in the air. Even if Revis is a shut down corner in year one and Rhodes and Dyson have huge games, how will we stop Rudi when Vilma is being blocked by 2 O-linemen on every play. If you watch yesterday's game again, we were the best when we played a 4-3, and it just makes more sense that it takes more to move 4 guys than it does to move 3 guys.

Our key to victory, believe it or not, is the passing game. And Chad is the answer because Kellen's arm strength will not do anything if we can't run the ball. We need Chad's accuracy to fit the ball in on those middle-depth passes, and then get a couple 3 yard runs to make the 3rd down passes a bit easier...I want to see Leon Washington catch more passes out of the backfield that handoffs

Im not basing the season off yesterdays game b/c we played the best team in football, a team loaded on o-line, d-line and every other position on the field besides secondary. Its one game dont treat it like a season long trend. Thomas Jones will have hundred yard games, the jets defense will have strong performances this year. We couldnt stop the run in the 4-3 before mangini why would it change now? B/c Vilma is a pro bowl 4-3 dt? Robertson still would get blown off the ball and we would have no other dt to put along side him. For god sake its year 2 with the 3-4. I trust Tangini's decisions doing what they have done with a mediocre roster in 1 1/2 yrs

Perfect. I could not agree more. If you're ever up in Maine, let me know, I'll buy you a drink for being reasonable.

No, I said in the original post, 7-9 depending on the progress other teasm make. We can pass the ball, so if we can either improve our running or improve on stopping the run, we can beat some of the other not-so-great teams.

In response to some of the above. I think it is still very difficult to judge where we are as a team right now. I had a very poor sense of where we were as the pre-season past and I had no real good idea of how we were going to do in the first game.

That said, we have only played one regular season game against one of the best teams in the NFL.

I think ultimately, things this year will be a function of how the team and specifically the O-line and D-line responds to their coaching and development of chemistry. We should get better as the year progresses.

Next week, the most important thing to look for is did our O-line and D-line (pass rush) improve or did they remain just as in need of correction.

I still do not think it is fair to say that we will win 7 or 9 or 10 or 6. Right now, the jury is very much out. Things will be much clearer by week 3 or 4 as to what our potential is.

Greenhornet, my grievance with the team (probably alot of us share this) is that running up the middle was a problem last season and we have done no better stopping it. So, was anything changed to make this team better at doing so?

based on the one thign that looked OK yesterday, the passing game, and the fact that some of our season opponents look bad, I think we can win some games. Unfortunately, the good teams that really have it together are going to pound us.

Next week we play a great D and a RB that has been hurting us badly his whole career, I don't think it will be pretty. But, after that, things get better for 2 weeks in a row, yet they are by no means guaranteed wins.
