Then how did Santana win it so many times? Or do you think Minnesota has been the best team all these years?
Why would you be stunned? He's 14-2 since June 1st while Beckett is 9-6, he's 3-1 against Boston while Beckett is 1-1 against NY. Why would you possible be stunned?
Good win for the yankees today. Just one quick note. It seems as if Chamberlain has some what changed his approach. He does not appear to be going for the strike out anymore. He is throwing almost all fastballs and then a rare slider. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
I was thinking that myself. I can't remember the last time he threw that wicked slider. Must be at least 5 appearances ago. I hope there is nothing ailing his arm. That is by far his best pitch and his strikeout pitch. I'm sure it's the reason his strikeouts are down lately. Farnsworth and Rivera both had great innings. If you could only depend on Farnsworth to pitch like that everyday he would be an awesome addition to the middle relief or setup role when Chamberlain is "resting". You just never know when he is going to have that 2 HR inning.
Guys, Chamberlain pitched differently for one reason only last night. His father was sitting in the stands for the first time. He was just trying to get outs by any means necessary, rather than just relaxing like his usual self. You could tell he was trying to force things a bit. Speaking of his father, my wife and I actually had tears in our eyes when we saw Joba's father crying in the stands. F that whole Roger in George's box thing, THIS was a great Yankees moment. What was freaky was how they were talking about how minor league coaches are saying we haven't even seen his good curveball yet. He has a GOOD curveball? How the hell is ANYONE going to hit him when he's a starter? hmy: ---------------------- As for Farnsworth, that's the pitcher he should be. That's the guy I've been expecting all along. He's got the talent, but he's had too many mental breakdowns, and loses his control. When he's got his head on straight, he's damn near unhittable. Hopefully all the bench time he's had has been enough to get him on track. ----------------------- On the subject of the Cy Young, wins are a terrible way to measure the value of a pitcher. It would be like judging a positional player for the MVP based on the number of team wins. Of course, if you haven't won more than 3 games, you're not getting in the conversation, but wins are only a "qualifying" stat. Things like Ks, ERA, and all those crazy sabrmetric stats are the things to look at for the Cy Young, and Beckett, IMO, is the clear winner. Santana would come in second, and Wang would probably make it third at this point. (Though there are other guys who if they were on playoff teams would be more deserving, which is funny, since I just said wins shouldn't count, but playoffs = spotlight, unless your name is Santana, in which case, you are a man among boys anyway.)
It hasn't just be one outing that he has pitched differently. He is living on the fastball alone lately. Major league hitters can all hit fastballs and if he doesn't go back to using the slider more often eventually they will catch up to him. He actually has 4 pitches. He has a lights out changeup too which would be expected. As far as wins not being important, I doubt you will see Santana getting hardly any votes at all and if there is only one pitcher with over 20 wins I will bet they get it.
Yeah, but supposedly we haven't even seen his "good" curve, so I'm excited about that. I can't even imagine being a hitter, seeing a 100MPH fastball, followed by an 88MPH slider, followed by a what, 76MPH curveball? How the hell do you hit against that? (I honestly have no idea what his curveball speed is, so take that with a grain of salt.) As far as him relying on the fastball, he threw a bunch of sliders last night. (Honestly, I've fallen asleep before the last couple appearances by him, so I don't know what he's been throwing.) Also, if I were him, and my fastball was working, as it has been, I'd keep throwing it. Why give scouts film of his offspeed stuff to digest over the winter, when he can just give them a standard fastball to look at? ------------------------ On the Cy Young subject, if a pitcher has 20 wins, his stats are going to be above almost anyone else in the league. Again, the wins aren't what would determine the winning of the award, they would simply qualify that individual for the running. His stats would be what got him the votes, and deservedly so.
Nice win last night. we weren't exactly facing murderer's row but when thecpen comes in and throws 4 shutout innings it's a great thing. Kennedy pitched well, Farnsworth looked as good as I have ever seen him, Joba looked human but still came through w/o giving up any runs and Mariano looked in vintage form. Now i'd like to see Seattle win a couple of games against detroit as I am more concerned w/ Det but either way we have 3 gam leads in the L column against both Det and Sea.
I'm really referring to Colon defeating Santana in 2005, which was a flat out joke. But Santana is the best pitcher in the AL this season, and he won't win it. Why? Because his team isn't good enough. And I'd be stunned if Wang won it for many reasons. #1. His ERA is a little high. #2. A lot of people don't consider him an ace. #3. He missed a month. #4. He doesn't strike people out.
I can't argue with any of that but Wang was runner up to Santana last year when all those same things were true. I would probably say that Wang is considered an ace though. He has the best record in the league and maybe in all of baseball since he started 2 1/2 years ago. That's saying a lot.
A sweep is important if wehave any chance at the div. It's down to 5 in the L column, if we could ever get it to 3 by the time we play next week we'd have a great chance.
Are the Mariners done? Is the race between the BRONX BOMBERS and the Detroit Tigers now? Are the Blue Jays still in the mix? All wonderful Wild Card questions.
the mariners are beyond done.....theyre so bad right now that theyve actually started to fall behind in next years wild card race already
I'm rooting for Seattle to win the final game of their series. We need all the breathing room we can get.
Steve Phillips a month ago said the Braves would win the NL East...Mariners Wild Card...And Rockies Wild Card. What a dumbass.
What do you figure A-Rod's (well Boras') asking price is going to be after he opts out; about $400,000,000 over 8 years? With another opt out option after year 4?
I see the royals draw a lot of interest. Yankees sweep and pick up a game in their wild card lead. Lets keep it going
