The New York Jets have announced that they will honor former wide receiver Wayne Chrebet with a special halftime ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 23 when the Jets host the Miami Dolphins in the third game of the 2007 season.

?Wayne Chrebet was a one-of-a-kind player," Jets president Jay Cross said. "For 11 seasons, he represented this team with class and dignity. His skill was matched only by his big heart and his unflinching dedication to his team and the game of football. His legacy will forever inspire our players, coaches and fans. We are thrilled to celebrate his remarkable career with a special halftime ceremony."

Chrebet retired on June 2, 2006, second on the Jets' all-time list with 580 career receptions and third on the franchise?s all-time list with 7,365 receiving yards, for an average of 12.7 yards per catch.

He played his entire career (1995-2005) in a Jets uniform. As a rookie free agent in 1995, he moved from last on the depth chart that season during training camp to opening-day starter.

Chrebet played in 152 career regular-season games (third all-time among Jets wide receivers), starting 105 of those games, and he caught 41 touchdown passes from nine different quarterbacks. In the postseason, he played in six games, making five starts, recording 19 catches for 269 yards for a 14.2 average and two scores.

More details about Wayne Chrebet Day to follow at www.newyorkjets.com.

His last catch was the most mermorable. It was a third and long, he got the first down took the monster hit and still held on. Pure Chrebet. I'll never forget that.

That's so awesome. I can't wait. That's the game that's probably going to be my first Jet game, too.

    Hells yeah.
When he retired, I retired his Jersey. It's framed and hanging in my den. I hope the Jets retire Number 80. Wayne's on the field performance, and off the field class was what every Jet should aspire to be like -- Nay, every NFL player should aspire to be like.

28 and 80 RETIRE the number.. i kno will here #80 shouldnt be retired cause he didnt score 50 thousand td and have 50 thousand receptions but screw stats sometimes u have to look beyond all that and see that he was a true fighter , a true player and a true jet. besides all that he was such a fan favorite in 98 he sold second most jerseys in the nfl behind farve.

If you made an all-time NFL list of players who had absolutely no business being on an NFL field based on their physical attributes and talent Wayne Chrebet would probably rank in the top 5 if not the top of the list.

If you then made a list of all the players who played above their circumstances and used their hearts and minds to overcome physical limitations he'd be no lower than 2nd all-time.

The other guy I can think of who had no business being in the NFL but consistently contributed to his teams success was Rocky Bleier, the Steeler's undersized fullback who spent months in a hospital bed in Vietnam after being wounded in the leg by shrapnel from a grenade and yet managed to play on 4 superbowl winners.

I think Chrebet should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame because his accomplishments would have been impossible for anybody else with his physical attributes. That tells me had had one of the greatest hearts in NFL history.

    The Grand Entrance

Wayne and one of his pony's hitched to a chariot (of fire, music included), all of the pomp and circumstance of a deserving warrior returning to the field of battle...

Ok, I'll shut up, this is the No Fun League and things are serious, it's not the Super Bowl...

Hey, bit of a side question not relevant to the thread, but what radio station is the Philly game on tonight? I'm trying to listen via internet stream, but not sure if it will be on 1050 ESPN or somewhere else...

yea man when they zoomed in for the close-up of him and you saw that look that he had, chilling. typical #80, going out that way with a big 3rd down catch for a first

Yes, #80 should be retired and hung up next to #12, #13, #73 and WEEB. Like someone else had said, there is a time when you have to overlook statistical accomplishments and look at the heart. Chrebet was one of the BEST JETS PLAYERS to wear green.
