Glad we won but if it had been a close game Rivera would have blown yet another one. What else is new with him? We shouldn't worry though, Torre trusts him. Hell he waqs a good pitch years ago, that's all that should matter.
So joe is sabotaging us yet again? Rivera had a rough 3 game stretch but his ast 2 games were good, last night was just a case of getting him a little work. Stop w/ your irratinal posts after every little thing that goes wrong.
Nice win last night. Gained a game on many teams which is good. I only was able to pull off 2 series with a record of 4-3. Oh well, lets hope Mack can take care of things.
Maybe? Remember it's a 7 run lead in the 9th. I'm not a big advocate of the "Needs work" theory for a 36+ year old closer who has seen and done it all. IMO, Rest > Needs work. Now of course I'm not talking about a 1+ week layoff but that was a chance for him to get an extra 2 days rest and to me he needs that especially for the home stretch.
Except that over his entire career, and to this day, he will be the first to tell you he needs frequent work to keep his arm under proper control. He didn't need yesterday off, considering it wouldn't have been a 2 day break, it would have been at least 3. And there's no guaranty that he'll even be brought into Friday's game. It's not about experience in game situations, it's about his arm getting tight while sitting on the bench for too many days straight.
Did you just say "guaranty"? j/k I think what he says is just to cover Torre's ass for his frequent use of him. Think about it, would he ever say he needs more rest? No Way. My 'been there done that' reference was more to his tenure as a closer. He's getting up there in age. Having more rest and a few throw sessions to keep him Loose is better than being Overused and forced into games. - JMO
I'm not a pitcher, but if I go to the park to play catch regularly, my arm feels more loose and more fluid. My accuracy becomes noticeably consistent, etc. Nowadays I don't have time to go regularly, so i don't get into the same groove easily. I don't think it's much different for pitchers. Plus, Mariano's track record shows that he's better when he gets regular work. I posted those numbers in the previous game thread.
Umm, yeah, what was the problem with it? Anyway, why are reading into what Mo is saying? He's saying he needs work, just like he's ALWAYS said. This is nothing new. It's not like he woke up one morning back in June and said, "Oh shit, I need to throw 4 times a week or I can't do this job anymore." He's been stating he needs frequent work for his entire career. As for him saying when he needs rest, in both of the past two seasons, late in the year, when he felt a bit tired, he told Torre. Torre then sat him and extra couple days. So yeah, he says when he isn't feeling "good enough." Sure, he's getting older. That tends to happen. Could he use an extra day off every week? Maybe. It probably wouldn't hurt. But you can't sit him for a definite 3 straight days, having no idea whether he'll even be used on day 4 or beyond. A sizable lead with a travel day the next day is the perfect situation to let him get some work in. It really was no more than a pen session.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/guaranty Looks okay to me. EDIT: Actually, I guess my sentence structure used it in verb format, so guarantee would have been more correct. I'm pretty sure RT was trying to nitpick the spelling though, but whatever. EDIT/EDIT: No, re-reading it, I used it as a noun, so I was correct. Boo-yah!
Not sabotaging us. Living in the past. I don't care how good Rivera once was. I care that he he has killed us in his last 4 appearances. We can't afford a single loss, period. Obviously we will have some but it shouldn't be because the manager is an idiot.
Not to mention that a couple of days ago I posted Mariano's splits for no rest, one day of rest, two days of rest and three-plus days of rest. He is clearly better with one and two days of rest than he is with three or more (or none). This holds true for this season, and also for his career. Code: Rest ERA W L SV SVO G GS CG IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG 0 4.36 2 1 6 8 9 0 0 10.1 15 5 5 1 2 10 .366 1 2.70 0 1 8 8 14 0 0 16.2 16 5 5 1 0 16 .246 2 1.00 0 0 2 2 9 0 0 9.0 7 1 1 0 2 11 .212 3-5 5.00 1 2 4 5 18 0 0 18.0 19 10 10 2 2 16 .264
Yup. I also posted number right before you did from 2004-2006. Actually, his best numbers were with ZERO days of rest, just to emphasize that point.
AND he had been pitching well again since he had that rough 3 game stretch 2 weeks ago. He killed us in his last 4 chances? He hadn't given up a run in his previous 2, prior to that he stunk for 3 games but he was showing signs of getting out of it and rather than give him 4 days rest after improving he threw him out there for an inning. It just seems to me you guys always need something to complain about.
He gave up 3 hits and a run on Wednesday. He's not getting over anything. If it was a one run game it would have been another blown save.
But it wasn't a one run game, and that's a big part of the point. There was no harm in bringing him, because even at his worst, he wasn't going to blow the game. With the off day coming right up, it was a perfect opportunity for him to get some work in. You need to look at it more as a bullpen session than an actual appearance, since that's what it really amounted to.
You guys are totally missing my Point. Yet making it for me. This isn't 2004, 2005 or 2006 it's 2007 and he is Now 36+ years old. I am not talking about the Mariano of 3-4-5 years ago, I am talking about the Older Mariano of this Year.
