Seattle lost so at least we didn't lose any ground in the WC or division but we could have gained a game in both.

Mariano has been brutal, I hope this is a little rough stretch. He usually goes through this annually early in the year but never late. I am very worried about him.

Yeah, now I'm starting to get worried too.

What's worse, you can see he has no idea what's wrong. When his pitches get hit, his facial expression clearly shows he doesn't understand how it got hit so hard.

Plain and simple, Mo needs an off-speed pitch. He can still close, but not with just a regular fastball and cutter. He needs a pitch he can fool batters with. As Yis said, teams that face him often are having lots of success. I'm sure it's got a lot to do with not needing to guess on too many different movements on pitches.

I still don't know why Torre didn't use Chamberlain in the 10th as he was available. It wasn't even a close situation for Rivera. Well, actually I do but I won't even bother with it now.

Jeez..they had to sign Brackman to a major league contract and give up a spot on the 40 man roster. Now he goes for Tommy John surgery and will be out for a year and a half.

You bring your closer into tie games at home. That's the conventional wisdom.

Actually, this is almost exactly when he goes through his rough patch. Early to middle of August. Every year.

ETA: Actually, 2004 and 2002 saw them in late July, and 2006 just saw a little hiccup on August 8th, but

    2005: August 13-16
    2003 - August 15-16

Once it goes into extras, there will never be an opportunity for a home team to get a save. That leads to the conventional wisdom that cappy pointed out which is to use your best pitchers first because you just don't know how long the game will go on.

I hate the conventional wisdom, of course. Managing for an individual statistic seems pointless to me.

And that is where the problem is. Who Torre perceives to be his best pitcher. But I said I wouldn't go into it now.

Right. Don't go into it now. Go into it in 2009, when you might have a case.

    2003:

    August 15: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER
    August 16: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER

    2005:

    August 13: 2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER
    August 15: 1 P, 1 H, 0 ER
    August 16: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER

    2007:

    August 12: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER
    August 13: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER
    August 15: 1 P, 3 H, 3 ER

9 hits in 3 games the last week, in '03 he had a 1 hit game, in '05 he had a 1 hit, no run game sandwiched btw 2 games where he gave up runs and both of those app were 2 inning apps. This feels very different than ny other year. Sure he has had a hiccup or 2 late in the year but nothing this consistent. this is 3 games w/ 3 hits in each app. I am worried.
