I think that its bound to happen to ANYONE when you have them practicing on a slick field.

Too bad, I was hoping for Smith to give Coleman a run for his money for the starting safety spot. Hopefully it isn't as serious as it looks, but it doesn't sound good...

very true. but the fact of the matter is, Smith got injured on the slick field and Smith had knee injuries in the past.

How long until we see Brad Smith in the secondary? Mangini has worked with injury riddled secondaries before. Is he somehow causing the injuries? Will he be able to overcome this without a Pats like front 7?

Rashad has had a really good camp so far, but doesnt he back up Rhodes, not Coleman?

Yes he does, but the rest of the safety core looks like a list of guys that will not be around much longer. Unless Jamie Thompson, next on the "Unofficial" depth chart, is more than JAG.

My question was based on more of a hope that he could pull off the switch if a drastic need comes up, not fighting for Coleman's job.

Thanks for the info on Washington

I would guess that in a pinch he could play next to Rhodes instead of behind him, and maybe he will.

Smith was having a really strong camp until he got injured. It does suck, but I guess we should wait for the official diagnosis before we start moving guys around, out of position.

    No doubt.

After reading about Eric getting hurt I just suddenly thought of Washington and how he's been doing in camp.

This last month is always the hardest. My brain is locked into football, but the news comes slower than we all would like.

Rashad has been very physical in tc, but looking back on it, he is one of those guys who always seems to play hard right through tc.

Sometimes the backups and marginal guys give some extra oomph in tc because they have something to prove.

    E. Smith was also giving 110% in camp and was doing really well on ST, too.

    So,
I'm putting on my second-guessing cap for this one.

-Seeing how Smith had to be helped off the field on Saturday, and sat out Sunday, and favored the leg yesterday, they probably should have sat him out instead of having him go on a wet field today.

-Was an MRI even done after his injury on Saturday? It didnt look so good when he left the field. He had his arms slung over two trainers when he left the field, and he did not return.

-With all the rain that fell today, i am surprised they had them practice on what had to be a really wet field.

    /takes second guess cap off/

I hope it is nothing more than a sprain. Rashaad lacks what Smith has. Which is obviously why he is a backup instead of competing for a starting jobby.

Probably a good thing we at least signed Manny Collins the other day. Mangini mentioned him the other day and seems to like him already:

Manny Collins (5-10, 190, Rutgers) recorded 68 tackles, two interceptions and four fumble recoveries over four seasons at Rutgers University. The Plainfield, NJ native intercepted two passes in the Scarlet Knights season-opening win against North Carolina in 2006.

Could just be a minor sprain. I've sprained my ankles and knees to the point that I need to be carried. Heh, no one can ever do it. Such a pain. You can come back from those things in 5-10 days if needed, though.

Looks like it might be another hamstring injury.

    Jets' Smith injured during practice
    By ANDREW GROSS
    THE JOURNAL NEWS

    (Original publication: August 8, 2007)
HEMPSTEAD - Eric Smith was helped off the field this morning after the safety clutched at the back of his right leg just above the knee during Jets' practice at Hofstra.

The second-year pro had been playing very well in training camp, taking over most first-team reps from Erik Coleman. Jets coach Eric Mangini would not specify the injury - it appeared to be a hamstring problem - nor give a timetable for Smith's return.

"He's gotten quite a few reps in camp and he'll continue to get reps whenever that is," Mangini said. "Just like anybody else, he's been banged up before. I'm not sure on a timetable but he's a diligent worker. He'll be back as quick as he can."

Smith was hurt in a 7-on-7 drill as he tried to cover Stacy Tutt, who caught a touchdown pass from Kellen Clemens in the back left corner of the end zone. He was unable to put weight on his leg as Coleman and the medical staff helped him off the field and was *later seen on a side field trying to stretch out his leg.

    *good sign!
