Somewhere I read today that the reason Cashman didn't make any trades last week is that he is stockpiling players to trade for Santana this winter. I'de love to get Santana as long as it isn't stupid what we have to pay for him. He's still only one pitcher that can get hurt at any time.
That would be a blatant fabrication then. The fact is, Santana was grounded in as a Twin until the day after the deadline. He only started talking about leaving because the only move the club did before the deadline was to trade away their second baseman. Prior to the day after the deadline, there was no way for Cashman to know that Santana would even be available. Besides, we need pen help, as if that record wasn't broken enough.
I think you misunderstood. He expects the Twins to trade him this winter even before that happened. At least that's what the article inferred. I don't know that he was ever a lock unless they get rid of hunter anyway.
Then he must know something no one, including Santana did. Perhaps he's been on the phone with the Minny GM? Doubtful though. If the Twins were planning on dealing Santana before the deadline came around, there is no way they wouldn't have put him on the market. Can you IMAGINE what they could have gotten from teams trying to rope him in for the playoff run? Minny would have raped someone. I think the article you read is having some fun with speculation.
What I'm saying is, that makes no sense. Why would Minny wait till the winter to trade Santana, when they could get a total shitfall right before the deadline from a team desperate to bring him in for the playoff drive. If Minny truly had plans to trade him in the offseason, before the deadline, but chose to hold him till the winter, I'll take back anything I've ever said about Matt Millen being the worst GM in sports.
Whew, if not for Mo, can you imagine how many games we wouldn't win? Now ARod is, of course, the priority, but Mo has to be resigned before he gets offers from other teams. Why Mo and Jorge weren't extended before the season will never make sense to me.
Why would they possible trade him now when they are in the thick of the WC and Division race? The money they would make on that alone is worth keeping him for.
Because Cashman has that new policy since last year of not extending anybody in the last year of their contract.
