Miller piece is a few ph's down... Green, White & shade of dread With Miller hurt, Jets may need savior in Revis BY RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Monday, August 6th 2007, 4:00 AM The losers ate cold turkey sandwiches and were subjected to reruns of "Sex and the City" on the charter bus ride back to Hofstra. The winners were treated to buckets of ribs and fixin's from a popular BBQ joint, along with undisclosed video entertainment. Use your imagination. Eric Mangini tried to provide extra motivation for the annual Green and White scrimmage yesterday at Fordham, where the Jets played a preseason tune-up in an empty stadium. But in the end, the biggest winner may have been rookie cornerback Darrelle Revis, who was nowhere to be found. The unsigned first-round pick and the Jets are embroiled in a 10-day-old contract dispute, but Revis' value may have climbed a bit after an apparent hamstring injury to Justin Miller and a poor performance by incumbent starter Andre Dyson, who played with the second-team defense. Miller, one of the surprises in training camp, limped off the field in the fourth quarter, clutching his right hamstring and grimacing in pain. It was iced immediately and he didn't return. There was no word on the severity. A significant injury would be a tough blow to Miller, who is fighting his way back into Mangini's good graces after his arrest for misdemeanor assault in May. The former second-round pick, who teamed with David Barrett at cornerback for the White team (comprised of the first-team defense), played a terrific game. In fact, Miller and Barrett limited wide receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery to a combined two catches before his injury, earning praise from Mangini. The White team won, 24-21, holding the Chad Pennington-led offense out of the end zone until the fourth quarter. "I'm extremely happy with Justin Miller's progress," said Mangini, adding that Barrett, too, has excelled in recent days - perhaps a not-so-subtle message to Revis. From all indications, Miller is having a strong camp, but the Jets wouldn't have traded up 11 spots for Revis if they felt comfortable with their cornerback situation. They believe the standout from Pitt can be a shutdown corner, but the two sides are haggling over the length of the contract. The Jets want to lock him up for six years; Revis, one of only three unsigned first-rounders, wants a five-year deal. The Jets appeared to be solid at left corner, but Dyson no longer is entrenched at that spot. He played on the Green team (the second-team defense) and was torched by Justin McCareins on a 39-yard touchdown pass. He also was in the area on a 66-yard scoring pass to McCareins, but that may have been a busted coverage by a deep safety. Dyson did have an interception, snatching the ball from McCareins on a deep pass by Pennington (19-for-30, 186 yards, 1 TD). Other highlights and lowlights from the low-contact scrimmage, which amount to a two-hand-touch game: Kellen Clemens, the presumed backup QB, was "very sharp," Mangini said. Clemens (14-for-18, 205 yards, 1 INT), led the White offense to 17 points, including the two TD passes to McCareins (three catches for 119 yards). Marques Tuiasosopo (11-for-18, 103 yards) had one good drive and tossed a 9-yard TD pass to RB Alvin Banks. Mike Nugent boomed the ball on kickoffs and made field goals of 53 and 48 yards. His improved leg strength was obvious; he attributed it to offseason weight-lifting. The pass protection was leaky, as Pennington was "sacked" seven times. Mangini cautioned not to read too much into that alarming number, saying the officials had used a quick whistle to protect the quarterbacks from injury. Mike Nugent, never known for having a strong leg, boomed the ball on kickoffs and made field goals of 53 and 48 yards. Nugent did miss a potential game-tying kick from 65 yards as time expired, but his improved leg strength was obvious. He attributed it to offseason weight-lifting. The pass protection was leaky, as Pennington was "sacked" seven times. Mangini cautioned not to read too much into that alarming number, saying the officials had used a quick whistle to protect the quarterbacks from injury. With inexperienced left guard Adrien Clarke starting for the disgruntled Pete Kendall, it's an area that bears watching as the summer progresses.
nice. revis is probably sitting at home right now, laughing his ass off. i would love to see the stupid look on tannenbaum's face once dyson gets hurt as well. tannenbaum to revis' agent: "uhm...yeah...about the revis situation...lets...kinda...talk again...you know"
This was interesting; "Mike Nugent boomed the ball on kickoffs and made field goals of 53 and 48 yards. His improved leg strength was obvious; he attributed it to offseason weight-lifting." Mike Nuggent and the word "boomed" did not go together last year or the year prior. I still see him as a talented, developing, field goal kicker, though. I am glad he is a Jet.
With Barrett being banged up, Dyson playing on the 2nd team, Poteat as the only real depth and Miller possibly injured, Revis' agent knows that he holds all of the cards at this point.
Yeah, he reportedly put on 10 pounds during the off-season. His 65 yard field goal attempt fell 5 yards short to end the scrimmage Sunday.
don't put it past this one hit wonder FO to go out and hire some guy who is a bike messenger to play corner.... BECAUSE HE WANTS TO PLAY FOOTBALL!!
A guy who hasn't played a down in the NFL has "all the cards?" Really? Revis can't play anywhere else and the Jets have 5 guys with starting experience (not that they are necessarily starting quality, however.) A few may be banged up, but have a month until the first game. And...if Revis is laughing (as DaBallhawk hopes he is)...f'em.
The only cards he holds is Revis being willing to hold out for a year. TC injuries will not panic any GM or coach.
Now that would be funny, Revis sitting out the year. It's not like he is a John Elway. He might not get picked next year until the 3rd or 4th round if he did. Out of site out of mind.
the jets would lose their 1st and 2nd round pick. no leverage. re-entering the draft is an option for revis. i mean it's not going to happen, but it's an option. we however DON'T have an option.
and the Jets are losing leverage with Miller being hurt and Dyson not even practicing with the 1st team
We can trade the rights to sign him to the Chiefs for Ty Law. Ty Law is a 98 in Madden and would make us the favorite to win the SB just like we did in 05.
They already lost those picks. I agree it would look terrible for the front office but it would end up being a lot worse for Revis. That's why you never see anybody sit out a year as a rookie...well, not since Elway and he didn't anyway, just said he would. Like Manning.
WHY YES !!!!!! of course I do Mr. Shoe!! That's why I said they would get a replacement who wants to play for the injured player ...
I'm not too sure I understand how having EVERYONE hurt at CB helps Revis' situation. If Dyson is healthy enough to play, he's starting, end of story. After that, as long as one of Miller/Poteat/Barrett is healthy enough to play, he will start as well. Revis was never starting, even if he was in camp on Day 1. So unless EVERYONE is injured, Revis wasn't starting. IF EVERYONE is hurt, then we're doomed from the start anyway, and Revis doesn't matter. Either way, the Jets STILL have all of the leverage.
