Aside from Tom Brady....Pats' lines are solid on both sides of football & the Jets' aren't. That's the basic difference that I see. Its' Mangini's cleverness that helps make Jets' competitive. Everytime I watch that Jets'- Pats' playoff game, I get so angst & humiliated at how the Pats' O-line just mauls the Jets' D-line & how the Pats' D-line just manhandles the Jets' O-line. I hope this changes this season. Jets' O-line can only improve with Kendall not starting. Jets' right side also needs to improve. Its' truly a compliment to the Jets' coaching staff & players at how they kept that playoff game close for so long.
I've always just found it crazy how they have never really had this superstar Oline. They are always just kind patching it up here and there and they are still awesome.
Well the Jets lines manhandled the Pats earlier in the year in foxboro. That game was closer than the score and the Jets played extremely hard. The Jets have upgraded the line with Coleman and a healthy Puoha. The oline has more beef now as well with 330lbs Clarke.
let's not jump on coleman's or puoha's bandwagons yet...both are guys with potential and nobody really knows what they will do...i'm tired of the annual Puoha buildup, the guy has never played a game
While your points are valid, you can't cast the blame solely on the o-line. Pennington looked horrible in that playoff game, and I would bet anything his arm was dead after what he went through last year. This offseason he actually got to rest it so he shouldn't have that problem again. D-line will be improved with the new additions of Wadsworth, Bowens, and Harris. I know they are all linebackers but I think what the Jets are trying to accomplish is having 7 big dudes with good speed and range in the front 7, rather than a massive dline and a smaller linebacking crew. The run defense should be improved significantly and the pass rush is decent so far. Oline is a concern... it is the make or break of the Jets season probably (unless of course Pennington goes down, then you can say its broken). I just hope we don't get burned because we stayed away from the oline this offseason.
A guy who gets it! I've been screaming for a long time that we need lines. It all starts with the lines. We finally started to address it when Mangini arrived. Coincidence? I think not. Drafting D'Brick and Mangold was a stroke of genius, even though it meant resisting the temptation to draft even Matt Leinart. Kudos to Tanny and Mangini! And we ain't done yet!
THat was the Jets' finest hour.....that win in Foxboro. The thing that few remember is that the Pats' had injuries on D-line. I believe that Ty Warren was out for that game. I'm not 100% sure which, but 1 of there big 3 of Seymour, Warren & Wilfork was out for that game. And the Jets' took good advantage of it. Jets' blitzes also wrecked havoc on Pats' that day. Problem I had with Jets' losing that playoff game was that the Jets' lone victory over Pats' was by running the ball with the bigger RB. The Jets' abandoned the running game against the Pats' in the playoff lose & only utilized the lil scatback Washington.....which was folly & foolish. I sure hope Clarke pans out & Jets' get better play from right side of O-line.
Yep...I bet when Chad watches the replays of that game....I bet he would say that he would have done things abit different. He rushed some plays & other lil things.
I don't know Kendall's exact physical size (he's big), but Clarke is bigger. Massive guy on the line. I hope he pans out too. Kendall's antics this season may turn out to be the best thing that happened to us this year.
Whilst I agree with your opening statement , the closing one is still up in the air. Lets hope we do actually move forward rather than backward otherwise we will be drafting linemen high in the draft...again.
My God Man... Is this the only topic you talk about   ... Anyway, I'm looking to see vast improvement in our O-Line this year... D-Line, well thats still up in the air, because a lot of our DL success will depend on our big Poooo Bear
The Oline especially is what is dominating my thoughts at the moment and am trying hard to look past that problem. The D line isn't so much of a problem as an unknown quantity , we will be better or the same , the same cannot be said of the Oline
Why??? Because of no Kendall... He's HIGHLY over-rated here... He is average at best and on the downside of his career and has always been a Malcontent... I for one, think our O-line will be much better this year than last year, and will probably be better off without Kendall. Yeah, he's a "cagey vet" but he is not a good run blocker, and not as stout against a good inside rush either. Clarke, while raw, is a mamouth man, and I think will fit in just fine with the youth movement. Do you expect us to have a line like we've had in the past always? It doesn't always work like that... While not dominant, this Line will be much better than last years with or without Kendall. The running game will be much better as well. A good back can make a mediocre line look pretty damn good... that's what good backs do in the NFL. D-Lineman will also have to respect the play action, as will LB's and Safeties, so just committing to stopiing the run on early downs, it's really not going to happen to often. Also... everyone here should realize, we ARE still rebuilding... this kind of thing is going to happen this year and probably next while we put the pieces of the puzzle together. The only way to find out if Clarke can play is to put him in there and play him... the only way to get experience, is to be in the fire when it counts... so get used to the fact that Clarke will be between Mangold and Brick... whats the worst thing that happens... you have a big, athletic left side for years to come and a Perennial Pro Bowler (eventually) as the linch pin on the line... What a trajedy!! Ellis
Re; Kendall , yes to a degree. In a pefect world I would have liked to have seen the senior player stay another year and do his under wing fatherly figure especially for the inexperienced linemen and linemen playing different positions. Whatever linemen will run out first game of the season , it will to a degree be a baptism of fire , I just hope as the original poster pointed out that we don'y go backwards in the trenches.
Ellis...Ellis.... You forever seem to think that you're the only & official voice of this forum. Let me be one to inform you....that you're not. I don't know what you think you know......But if you can listen, then maybe you can learn. I know you're feelings are tender....but try not to cry. Lets' go back to FOOTBALL -101.....Strong teams have solid O & D lines & the Jets' have nowhere to go but up. I seem to focus on these aspects of the team, cause this is what drives the team...:breakdance: So, I don't really have to guess on what is gonna what happen down the road, cause when you look at your teams Lines...you can basically see the coming results. It's not rocket science. SO......Until this puzzle is solved & the puzzle is....on 3rd & 1; 3rd & 2; 3rd & 3....which linemen are the Jets' gonna run behind or to what side of the line....When this is a clear & almost unstoppable situation, then the Jets' Offense will have evolved & we can consider the Jets' as true contenders. What the Jets' have solved & know now is who the Jets' are gonna give the ball to on the 3rd downs....The final question is who the Jets' are gonna run behind ? Is it gonna be behind Adrien Clarke ? He seems to have the size, but.....we will in the next few weeks. But Ellis....recognize that the game is won in the trenches & I'm not into fantasy....."We Play To Win The Game"....lol. Maybe the switch of Clarke to RG to play next to the bigg RT & move Moore over to LG. This would create a bigg rightside for Jets' to run behind. The bigg blocking TE was also missing last season. Pats' are gonna miss TE Grahams' blocking alot this season.
Baker is a fine blocking TE, not the best.. but hes good at it. The Pats have Klye Brady now anyway, so they'll be fine in the TE blocking game.
i have my doubt's about the pats missing graham as much as you may think. they have receiver's that are going to spread the field out, big time!!! moss on one side and stallworth on the other is crazy speed teams are going to have to respect. put welker in the slot and ben watson in as tight end and thats a formidable offense to have to deal with. especially with the guy that throws the rock. i'm looking forward to the first game to see how we stack up against them.
I don't know why, but for some reason that opening line reminded me of something Skip Bayless would say.
The guy is definetley big. If he has any mobility at all he should be able to hold his own against opposing defensive linemen. Who knows, maybe he actually ends up being an upgrade from last year. Probably just wishful thinking but you never know. He has the body to be a forminable linemen but we'll have to wait till the regular season to see if he has the other nesesarry intangables needed to succeed at this level.
