I can just see the newspaper headlines now if Arod hits a hr in that suspended game.

    or

    "AROD HITS 500..er 493..whatever"

I hope he doesn't hit any in the suspended game, and hits 3 in the second game. We need wins.

I like all the matchups except tonight's. I'd expect they hold on to win the suspended game. (They'd better, damn it.) I give the Yanks a big edge in Clemens vs. Burres, and possibly an even bigger edge in Wang vs. Cabrera.

When Cabrera is on, he's on, but I'd hope that the Yanks can be patient enouh against such a generally wild pitcher, and I have a lot of confidence in Wang vs. the free-swinging O's.

But tonight... hoo boy. Pettitte has put together three decent starts... but Guthrie has been lights out, for the most part. He's only had one real blemish on his record as a starter this year. Hopefully the Yanks can get to him, but this kid has been nasty all season long.

Even so, if things happen to go "as planned" (which rarely happens), I'll be content with three out of four.

I hope he hits one in the first just for the fun of it and 3 in the second game.

Isn't Cabrera set up to take the loss in that suspended game?

Gutherie's last 2 starts were good. The prior 4 he gave up 5, 3 and 4 runs..not really lights out.

So, Igawa was sent down today but I missed who was recalled. Nobody important.

Chris Basak. Basically another version of Miguel Cairo. So I have no idea why they keep calling him up.

Keep winning series.... Take 2/3 from the normal games and don't blow the suspended game. We're good enough to do that, and another 3-1 helps a lot. A sweep would be great, obviously, but I don't think you can expect that.

Well, for one, that's why I qualified it with "for the most part." He's had one "bad" start. The rest have all been good to great. When a guys has a 2.88 ERA and a WHIP of 1.00 (especially after a shaky start to the season coming in from the bullpen), I feel comfortable standing by my description.

Look at the context of the starts you pointed out. Working backwards from most recent to oldest (not counting the two, most recent outings that you admit were good):

July 12th - That's the "bad" start I was referring to. Five runs in 3.2 innings. He got knocked around.

July 6th - Three runs in six innings.

July 1st - Four runs in eight innings. Only four hits given up. Seven K's. No walks. He just made two mistake pitches.

June 26th - Against the Yanks. 6.1 innings. Two runs.

Those are all good starts. Actually I guess four runs in eight innings is just "okay." But still.... go back and look at his season. Before the game against the Yanks, it's one run, one run, two runs, one run, etc. Aside from those three starts that have already been discussed, Guthrie has only given up more than two runs in a start once... when he gave up three runs in seven innings back on May 24th.

It's just semantics, I guess, so let me just state the main thrust of my post: Guthrie has shown himself to be a very good, very efficient pitcher for the Orioles and, of all the games in this series, the game he starts concerns me the most.

I'm hoping to see A-Rod's 500th chronological home run in the first game

Why? That was last year's rule, not this year's. It shouldn't have ended and it didn't.

    Agreed.

And good riddance to Igawa. He's got a few years to see if he can get his shit together, I suppose, but if he doesn't get it together by next season, cut bait, please.

Buster Olney was just saying on ESPN that teams are interested in Igawa, and that the Yankees are willing to trade him. Awesome!

Game's about to "start." Let's take this!

BTW: Detroit wants Farnsworth back. Another good riddence!

Now if we can just move Damon too! I won't even dare dream that we can dump Giambi.
